A recent study has shown that the Zambian health system would save up to $611,046 per year if each woman treated for a complication of unsafe abortion had instead accessed safe termination services.

The study entitled the Health System Costs of Unsafe and Safe Abortion in Zambia which was conducted by the University of Zambia and the London School of Economics estimates that it costs $13.43 to treat a bad case of unsafe abortion.

Dr Ernestina Coast, an Associate Professor of Population Studies at the London School of Economics said the Zambian health system spends up to $2.4 million per year on post-abortion care to treat adolescents and women after unsafe induced abortions.

Dr Coast observed that the costs of treating complications following unsafe abortion are a burden on public health care systems across the world.

She said US$380 million is spent per year for treating complications from unsafe abortions in Africa while US$274 million is spent per year in Latin America in dealing with complications arising from unsafe abortions.

“The costs to the Zambian health care system of unsafe abortion have never been estimated. There is no routinely collected data so we have to make estimates based on key informant interviews and medical case records review of women either receiving a safe abortion or care following an unsafe abortion,” Dr Coast said.

She revealed that Zambian, Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, health service administrators and Staff of international non-government organisations active in the provision of safe abortion and Post Abortion Care in Zambia were interviewed for the survey.

Dr Coast, “It costs the Zambian public health system 2.5 times more to provide post abortion care for unsafe induced abortions than to provide safe abortion. Preventing unwanted pregnancies and providing safe abortion services are cost-effective and life-saving.”

She said unsafe abortions also has associated costs of such as death, longer-term ill-health and seeking care for the woman herself and the money she has to borrow from family or friends.

  1. Hhuuuuuu; this is really questionable, although any research result is not perfect; that on average there are about 180 000 UNSAFE abortions per year in Zambia! How come we don’t hear of them that much? I think if the statistics were near truth, a lot of alarm would have been raised by now, compared to what the first lady and others have raised. Are you talikng about people who get treated at the hospitals for abortion, or those who take ‘morning after’?

  2. That data is not true and we all know that! This just a way of allowing abortions in our Country! This started a long time ago. The west is at it again. People, for a long time there has been pressure on our nation to permit gay rights and abortion. So there you have it.

  3. Safe abortion is very important reproductive health. I work in the hospital, there is too much unsafe abortions going on in zambia which are mostly done by unscruplus people, and end in complications.
Inaddition, abortion is a culturally and religious sensitive issue, but it is happening in zambia. College and university girls are the waste culprits.

    • The main reason why doctors want this is because of money. Mind you this is blood money. Its no different from armed robbers who murder the helpless and get their belongings. In the same was doctors team up with the person carrying the pregnancy to murder a defenseless innocent baby and take away the most precious thing the baby has that is LIFE.

  4. Zambians , you must wake up from your sleep. These statistics about abortion are satanic gimmicks to legalise abortion in Zambia. Regardless of how someone conceived they have no rights to terminate the pregnancy because that is murder. Zambia has enough laws to deal with mothers whose lives are in danger if the pregnancy was kept. The cry of the blood of the innocent children murdered by these agents of the devil masquerading as medical doctors will continue haunting them and their generations. Everyone participating in these maneuvers, we decree the curse which was upon Cain for killing Abel to come upon them. God should never hear any of their prayers until they repent of these satanic activities. Government officials pushing to legalise abortion are cursed people. BE WARE!

  5. The facts are, Christain teaching, Traditonal teaching, and Medical Warnings are not making an impact on people’s decisions. The AIDs epidemic was living evidence to Africans. The pattern of African AIDs contraction proved a). We weren’t acting on what we were taught or cautioned on. This revelation tells us on how the primitive mind overwhelms our people. The worst is the evidence provided of Young Underage Pregnancies. This is the truth of Zambian life, that we hid under our beds. What needs to be done? Unfortunately for all these academicians and their fancy Studies, Theories and Recomendations; it is all the psyche of each and every person to decide on Personal Values and to want it so bad as to refrain from these destructive.

  6. To decide on personal values and to refrain from these destructive behaviour patterns. The worst thing is noisy sounds from people such as that religious sound bite @ The Prophetic Voice provides. We can judge if we so wish or we can hang our heads in shame before God and ask Him for Deliverance from these conditions. I am sure we can get that ‘extra’ strength to become Celibate or much more disciplined in our personal sexual choices, activities, practices before and during them. Personally, I take Celibacy in my later years. For young kids, teens society must help. Can we provide them with a better environment. Can we raise our Boys as Gentlemen with better control? Can our Girls be taught to be more self considering? Politicians avoid public extramarital acts?
