ABOUT 200 students who applied for bursaries in rural areas were not picked because the department of social welfare did not submit their application forms, Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education John Phiri has said.

Dr Phiri said in an interview on Monday that he has engaged the Ministry of Finance to see how best rural-based students can be helped.

Dr Phiri said the omission by the department of social welfare resulted in many students not being awarded bursaries.

“I just hope that the committee which is looking into the final list of bursary applicants will finish on time so that the students can be able to register,’’ Dr Phiri said.

He also said the University of Zambia (UNZA) has extended the registration period for students to November.

Dr Phiri is confident that the omission by the department of social welfare will be avoided in future and more students will be awarded bursaries.

  1. Dr.Phiri and your PF, are a big joke. It is absurd that kids from PF big wigs are preferred and awarded bursaries at the expense of the needy and deserving power. The whole bursary process is marred with irregularities. Do something, Dr.Phiri. I am consoled by the fact that you and your PF are a failed one term project

    • A Phiri thats utter stupidity. Since when did the awarding of government bursaries depend of financial circumstances of the poor student? How do you explain the fact children of PF ministers ,MP and top civil servants getting bursaries when they come from families better off financially compared to those from the villages and shanty towns?

This is total f00lishness coming from a learned individual.

PF is a bunch of f00ls and *****s. It has failed to handle the affairs of the nation diligently.

2016, PF should go no matter what.

  2. Ba Phiri just go and scrutinize the names of those who have been awarded bursaries then you will know why some have been omitted.

  3. Bo Phiri, all along rural people have been alienated from the bursary, this is a well known fact. You guys are selfish , I mean all you politicians, PF, UPND, FDD, UNIP, etc, all your children and relations get the bursary but those who are not connected are thrown away. We now know you politicians, you are selfish people behaving as if you are from the same parents. Change your ways and care for the cause of children of poor people. I am warning you to change your bad ways …shaaaaa.

  4. SINCE WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS CHANNELLED THROU DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WELFARE? BOZA JUST FINDING KA EXCUSE INU MBUZI ZABANTHU

  5. i agree with the prof he is very right.there are so many lapses in the current system that is why in my paper i presentedto this media i proposed that provincial social welfare officers shud sit on this board or Bursaries office be moved to Ministry of social welfare

  6. Tell the nation which districts have the children they papers missing. We know the issue and the selective nature of this croup of leaders.

  7. The news should have been 200 rural students who would have lost bursaries due to inefficiency of paper work by Social department have been awarded bursaries.
