THE construction of the US$52-million Lunzuwa Hydro Power Station has been completed, ZESCO managing director Cyprian Chitundu has said.

Mr Chitundu said in an interview in Lusaka recently that the construction of Lunzuwa Hydro Power Station had been completed and was set for commissioning.

Mr Chitundu, however, said that commissioning of the hydro power station would be delayed until the rain season starts.

“I must say that commissioning of this hydropower station would be delayed because of the low water levels at Musonda Falls. This hydro power station used to produce only 0.75 megawatts, but we have now moved to 14.8 megawatts.

“That is more than a 100 times of what we are producing from that particular site. So we should be able to supply Mpulungu, Mbala and some parts of Kasama in Northern Province,” Mr Chitundu said.

ZESCO had embarked on the constructing and upgrading of the hydro power stations in some parts of the country.

The constructing and upgrading of the hydro power stations was critical for Zambia to increase its generation capacity and meet its exports to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the great lakes region and Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa.

  1. Excellent news this. Matter of fact with the large proportion of water bodies in the southern African region resident in Zambia, we could just be the trademark supplier of power to the area in the not so distant future. If we can maintain this push (and ensure maintenance is made a habit) we shall not go wrong.

    • Iyi nayo ni makali ba PF. Very Good work done. Another great achievement by PF Government. Choose a successor to Sata who will continue with achievements. PF to continue governing Zambia until 2030 for quick developmental achievements. No more load shedding…

    • @Chox.com

This was planned long before PF was elected!

Just like the Batoka Gorge that was designed in 1972, and what has this useless PF Government done about THAT?

Be honest with the credits. These Poor Fools have not had even one good idea of how to improve Zambia, and have failed to even use the ones that are there already.

    • That is just close to 20 times the power they used to generate. May be he wanted to say “…more than 100%…” Which is true!

  2. Exporting power to the neighbours brings alot of money but zesco under pf mismanages the funds Prudent financial management lacking in the dead pf as a consequence stealing public funds day out day in,Zambia is bleeding.

  3. Compare:
RB commissioned the construction works of the $250 million Itezhi tezhi Hydro Power station

THE construction of the US$52-million Lunzuwa Hydro Power Station has been completed, ZESCO managing director Cyprian Chitundu has said.
then….Another great achievement by PF Government?Really!

    • Even this project was started by the MMD under Rupiah in 2010 to be precise, but people want to take credit for everything and make an impression that RB did nothing.

  4. It is good that this project has finally been completed after stalling it when PF came to power. This project should have been completed in late 2012 to early 2014. But when PF came to power they started stalling projects started by the previous regime so that they can complete it towards the general elections to gain political mileage. These are the politics of the pocket without regard to the suffering of people who live in the area. The power situation in Mbala and Mpulungu is erratic and below the 240 V required for domestic use and yet people do not care to stall the projects just to gain political mileage out of it.

  5. Correction. Musonda Falls is in Luapula Province and there is a 6 MW power station also named Musonda Falls Power Station. Lunzua is in Northern Province near Mpulungu and they are separate catchment areas. I believe this is a run-of-the-river scheme i.e. it has no dam for storing water unless the construction of a dam was part of the project. I can imagine that the Lunzua river must have very low flows at this time of the year. Such small errors can raise doubts about the correctness of the entire report.

  6. Ba MMD balibika Power Station that is powered by rain water; we will have to wait for the rain season every year for the station to re-open?

  7. He is quick to develop power projects in the North because he comes from there. The other one is shiwangandu and yet Northwestern prov. has inefficient diesel stations. Zesco has even been sued by DBZ for unpaid $500,000. The revenues to pay the loans will come from mines in Northwestern prov. Our time of redemption is near, God has heard us.
