Commerce minister Robert Sichinga has for the first time publicly spoken out about an audio recording in which he was secretly recorded telling a woman now known as Bana Nono that if president Sata died, Zambia would have a constitutional crisis with a vice president then, Guy Scott who could not take over as President.
Commerce Minister Bob Sichinga says he has been vindicated in the statement he made in the famous “Bana Nono” Audio clip that went viral few days before the demise of Republican President Michael Sata.
The recording went viral on social media and Mr Sichinga who is now a presidential aspirant in the ruling party being nicknamed Bashi Nono.
Mr Sichinga says the recording was a result of rubbish,gutter and irresponsible journalism.
Without directly referring to the recording, Mr Sichinga told the journalists attending media workshop hosted by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission in Siavonga that journalist should not abuse their platforms to destroy the lives of others.
At this point he said “you know what am referring to”.
The Minister who was speaking during a Media workshop organised by Consumer Competition Protection Commission (CCPC) in Siavonga today said, though some online media took turns to discredit him and his statements, the infamous statement has come to pass and people are able to see exactly what he had said.
Mr. Sichinga noted that the issue of calling him “Bashi Nono” was blown out of proportion but that he has been vindicated.
“I want to say to you that some of you have written things about me you hardly know. I believe in press freedom as long as it is practised responsibly, it should be used to inform and not to distract and to abuse those that can not be able to respond back to you.
“In other words opinions especially in our naivety we believe what the newspapers say including electronic media including the Zambian Watchdog is true, is gospel truth.
“Let me say this I have not responded to of the statements that have been made about me because I don’t give credence to such rubbish.
“Even you if you want to interview me just get the facts and don’t now start no Bashi Nono this and Bashi Nono that,I just want to say the danger that I talked about has come to pass and you have seen what has happened in the immediate past,” Mr. Sichinga said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Sichinga has appealed to the media to be factual and truthful in their reporting and be able to press public leaders to account for their statements and works.
He further challenged the Media to enlighten citizens on their rights as consumers and the need for competition in trade.
Before concluding his speech, Mr Sichinga again referred to himself as Bashi Nono sending the workshop participants into laughter.
He also reminded the journalist that he is a presidential candidate in the PF and needed to go and campaign.
And CCPC Executive Director Chilufya Sampa said his organisation is planning on opening offices in other parts of the country especially in rural areas as such places many people are uninformed where their Consumer Rights are concerned.
He should be ashamed really shouldn’t he?

When the institution of presidency has been devalued & defaced every fool & their pet believe that they can be president. Zambia has experienced a terrible downward spiral in the quality of leaders. Shame, it could have been a much better country. Now in this season restoration that comes as a result of jubilee people need to pray for good leaders and not mediocre chaps with no vision for the country. Tribalism, nepotism, corruption will only lead to chaos. People cannot be frustrated & fooled forever, they will resort to more drastic means and everyone will suffer!

Any serious minded person cant even waste his time considering him for presidency, may be Bana Nono can. Mr Sichinga (Bashi Nono) appears to be telling the press to report factually and responsibly in the same breath he appears to be admitting that his oratory on that ‘fateful’ day at a girlfriend’s house have vindicated him. I am a bit confused here. If the ZWD did not report (and put out the video), what he considers irresponsible and bent on destroying his lives, how then could we have known what he was thinking? The recording he is unhappy about is actually what the public needed to have heard for him to be now vindicated. Poor politicking, Sichinga wants to have the cake and eat it.
