The UPND National Chairperson Mutale Nalumango has urged Zambians to look at the bigger picture of a better Zambia through economic emancipation and ignore small minds bent on dividing the people of Zambia through tribalism.Mrs Nalumango dimissed accusations that the Bantu Botatwe have re-grouped under the UPND as a baseless, malicious and tired political scheme that has always been used to discriminate Mr.Hichilema based on his tribe by political opponents and their cartel cohorts.

Full Press Statement

The United Party for National Development will remain focused on its national agenda of delivering a better Zambia after the 20th January Presidential elections despite detractors peddling tribal hatred against the party and its President Hakainde Hichilema.

As a party, we are humbled and encouraged by the ground swell of broad-based support and endorsement UPND and Hakainde Hichilema is receiving from all sections of society as a most preferred party and candidate for the forthcoming 20th January Presidential elections.

It is clear from the support UPND and HH in particular has from across the political, regional, ethnic, racial and age group divide that there is a national movement and realization that it is now time to vote for a party and a President that will deliver economic benefits to the majority of Zambians.

I therefore wish to dismiss accusations that the Bantu Botatwe have re-grouped under the UPND as baseless malicious and tired political scheme that has always been used to discriminate HH based on his tribe by political opponents and their cartel cohorts.

Fortunately, such malicious labelling has this time around failed to sway the majority of Zambians who have resolved to deliver UPND Presidential candidate, Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, into state house during the forthcoming elections.

The truth is that the time for HH to lead this country has come and no amount of tribal hatred by political opponents and their cartel associates will derail that national resolve for a better Zambia.

The support which UPND and HH have continued receiving following the launch of the presidential campaign with a huge rally in Kanyama in Lusaka has overwhelmed our political opponents who have resorted to the old and tired story of tribalism even when everyone is able to see the unstoppable growth of UPND and HH’s popularity countrywide.

I am calling on all Zambians to look at a bigger picture of a better Zambia through economic emancipation and vote for HH on 20th January 2015 and leave small minds to continue wasting time on discussing issues aimed at dividing the people of Zambia.

Our President has already pledged that the UPND Cabinet will be inclusive, and at a bare minimum, comprise Ministers from all the 10 provinces and that remains the position come January 2015.

Mutale Nalumango
UPND Chairperson

  1. Imwe mayo, where do Mabenda,Sacika and Mabenga come from ? Same southern and western . HH will never accepted because of the way he took over the UPND leadership from Mazoka, who unfortunately was accepted by all Zambians but robbed of a clear victory.

    • You are a very useless tribalist… Why should you continue preaching and protecting tribalism? Any Zambian is free to join a party of association of their choice without being questioned..

    • PF cadred must accept that PF is gone walkies. Tomorrow panga will come out for them to completely obliterate themselves and save Zambia the blood shed.

Madam Namalungo is absolutely right in her statement.
Look at the farmers in Kasama today. They are protesting against non payment for their maize sold to FRA and threatening to withdraw it. Surely do you think people in Kasama will want anything to do with PF again after having been lied to and disappointed so many times.

This time around the PF cadres still doubting HH and believing in Mmembe’s bigotry will be shocked. Even Mmembe him self said it the other day, that PF blew their chances a long time ago when it failed to honour its pledges about the constitution and paying farmers on time.

Only HH will take Zambia forward

    • Fortunately, TRIBALISM in Zambian politics is on its way to extinction. What we have witnessed in PF, may stand to be the worst kind of tribalism ever, and never to be replicated.

  2. Kaingu’s a wasted and failed politician. HH is not a tribalist and he is the only suitable one for state house as jubilee president. Hate him or like him it won’t change God’s will. Kudo mama Nalumango.

    • The truth is there is only a thin line between desperation and insanity. UPND is tribal and HH is a crab who will never like a none tonga to be president.
Nalumango please read your party constitution, then ask Sakwiba Sikota, Chisanga, Hon. Nawakwi. It takes the grace of God for HH to accept a none tonga with all is heart, you are going the rocky road of promises but please confront the brutal facts that Zambia is better off today than 6 years ago.

    • @ Pio

Your language betrays you. Tribalism seems to be flowing through your veins. But we are not giving-up on you. We believe you are a child of God and God alone will change you. I hate tribalism in any form or shape!

  3. Ba Mutale Nalumango, you joined a wrong party in UPND,so you shall just get finished like those rebel PF MPs in 2010.they’re all out of politics and finished once they joined a wrong party in MMD.your UPND will never be a factor in northen Zambia.it’ll lose even at your village.this is a harsh reality u have to face Nalumango!PF is too strong in those areas!what Michael Kaingu said about UPND is the gospel truth.this party has no national appeal.if RB stand, then the battle will be between PF and RB’s team though PF shall win.HH will be far third, mark my words!

    • @Eddy you haters and tribalist what do you mean national appeal .Any one Tonga is not national appeal ,we chinangwa we.Stop this Bufontine we need development .we eat policies not tribe. You back ward creatures.ViVa HH.This time its do or die.

    • You are a very useless tribalist… Why should you continue preaching and protecting tribalism? Any Zambian is free to join a party of association of their choice without being questioned..

    • @ Eddy

The fight against tribalism is a fight against the powers of darkness. They are imbedded in it and want to perpetuate the evil at all costs. Mutale Nalumango in UPND and Inonge Wina in PF are both warriors and fighters against tribalism. These people are not in those parties merely to do politics for politics’ sake. They are there essentially to kill and cure the devilish spirit of TRIBALISM in those political parties.

  4. I am challenging all well meaning Zambians to analyze the current situation. Sata’s funeral and the by election will gobble a lot of resources which could have been used to pay farmers .Zambia is owing other countries and businesses abroad is about 4.7billion dollars. More k200million Kwacha of tax payers money. Sure mwe bantu even if tribalism you want to bring another disaster like Edgar Lungu with a criminal record and adiabetis patient.Olo ta mulapila chinshi kanshi a cho mulafwaya.Thats why Lozis say lets share this country because you seem to enjoy being ruled by crooks because you are crooks. Abash tribalism .Ni HH Chabe FlightHH 2015.

    • There is no country which does not borrow, just last year Great Britain borrowed from China to extend the airport.
HH will not win this coming elections with is gaff promises.

  5. Those who support hh know that he always wins in southern and some parts of western and north-western provinces. Even this time he is going to win in those areas but not winning the presidency. That can never happen because copperbelt is PF, Luapula is PF, Northern is PF and muchinga is PF. This time even eastern will vote for PF.

  6. If surely your parents and siblings where dying of hunger, tribe would not be a selection criteria. This time am hoping Zambians have learnt and seen tribalism and nepotism during PF.It only those who are bent on tribe that would want to protect there positions in govt where they do not even qualify.True Zambians believe in a country that is blessed yet poorly managed. This time around, tribe will not count for my family we have resolved to support HH.This will forever set my conscious free unlike the torment that I hand under sata after raising our hopes you end up creating a family forest.Nowander Kaseba can’t sleep but try and protect his minions forest spread in govt. Just an example of such revealed itself last week when so—so Chibesakunda was trying to protect her!CJ going out come…

    • Forget the tribal talk as it seems it became more entrenched with the PF coming on the scene lets talk regional, states and federalism. I do not believe the Mazoka was accepted nationwide blanket statement as people using it want to make believe. They talk about Mazoka as an individual yet want to tie HH to statements made by other people being him to keep him out of state house. Love or hate HH, he represents the calculative modern age generation with the likes of Miles Sampa able to analyze current world economic trends thus better candidates. See how people with mediocre complex are choosy! Tribal when it suits their hate agenda not that team work matters for the One Zambia One Nation motto. It just seems the northern region has the monopoly to set the national agenda and none other.

  7. HH does need an image builder so he can connect with the electorate. He also needs to put a bit of “spin” on the message he delivers at rallies. He comes across as being credible, but he is is too stiff and gives the impression of dis – connect with the grassroots in spite of the positive messages. He is not gifted with oratory, but a little dose of “candor with charisma” will make the difference as he meets the people in the towns he will be visiting. He is a good candidate for the presidency if he can demonstrate a “national face”. He should also so demonstrate a collective participation by his inner circle, so he does not look detached from them as captain of the ship!!!

    • Life is a journey. The late Michael Sata left UNIP to join MMD and left MMD for form PF. Rejection or no rejection, life is a journey.

    • Just shut up! You are the same Northern 1diots who were justifying Sata’s rampant tribal appointments telling all and sundry that “these are the people he can work with”.

    • Now you can see why Sata’s cabinet is predominantly northern! Added to that he had to look after his friends and family. You will have a Southern dominated cabinet if HH wins . Sad but that is reality.

    • Whats being insinuated with this listing? Thats what UPND has when your laws say one has to choose from MP’s and it was until Mwanawasa (MHSRIP) that we saw inclusion of cabinet officials borrowed from other parties. Its not a hidden fact that when grumbling became louder on choice of PF cabinet the leader started poaching from other parties only that he chose weaklings just to give face to inclusiveness!

  11. Why are we judging this son of the land based on his tribe? I think people commenting on tribal lines should consider themselves to be tribalists. HH is the best candidate now and based on this alone we should rally behind him for a better Zambia.

  12. So if HH and UPND is accepted country wide why are you crying tribalism tribalism?? Is it not a well known fact that themselves have said ” ONLY A TONGA CAN BE PRESIDENT OF UPND?” . Its not Zambians who have said this but the UPND when they were chasing Chisanga and Sikota. So what should be done is to tell HH to step down so that a neutral person takes over from HH. Its on the account of HH coming in UPND chisanga and sikota were chased. HH is losing for the fourth time come January 21 , 2015.

Peace and Prosperity to mother Zambia.

    • No, it is not “a well known fact that themselves have said…” Only one mentally impaired Tonga said so. I conjecture it was merely the slip of a tongue of that solitary individual. Let’s us forgive the poor fellow and move on.

  13. Madam Nalumango, you are wasting us time and space on this blog. Please no one is interested in finished politician like yourself, Maureen Mwanawasa, VJ, Lifwekelo, Mulongoti, Andrew Banda and many more.

You will never be MP again. If you didn’t steal during your time as member of parliament, forget about haft monthly salary and gratuity.

    Full Stop!!!

  14. …Nalumango and her team should be the first ones to ignore the accusations….otherwise commenting on it, they are helping to highlight the situation…

  15. Bana lumango you are defending what cant be defended. Go to ZNBC and ask for a clip of HH campaign in katuba. He said a Bemba cant be an MP in that area. lets protect Bembas from HH by voting Edgar lungu.

    • Are you saying that one bad move deserves another and that we should perpetuate tribalism just because someone somewhere else has practices it before?

  16. The problem is that tribal alliances have been a feature of Zambian politics since before independence. ANC was Bantu botatwe. Now it would seem to be UPND, judging by the representation in parliament and the hostility towards non-Tonga’s leading the party at the death of AM, the founder. HH has done himself a disservice by threatening chiefs and leaders in Tongaland, urging them to reject other parties because of their leaders’ tribes. His statement of being the `Tonga standing’ has put a lot of people off. There was also the attitude towards MCS, a man he had been in a pact with, refusing to support his attempt to bring into government some of the UPND MPs. Where will he get his ministers, other than from his party, given that attitude? As they say, the chickens have come home to…

  17. Does tribalism only exist if a tonga is involved? in 2011 northern copperbelt and luapula did not vote for upnd they voted for their fellow bemba. is that not tribalism ?imagine no single sit was won by upnd in these areas. what do we call that? lets be fair

    • No one is saying that: “tribalism only exist if a Tonga is involved.” All they are saying is that Tongas are tribal. Therefore, on the basis of Tonga tribalism, the other tribes like the Bembas are also justified to be tribal. Unfortunately, this is circular reasoning and a recipe for anarchy. Tribalism in politics is an evil that must be stopped. Unfortunately, both Tongas and Bembas have had a tendency to perpetuate it.

    • @bigben & mei….
      ..stop it….
on Nov. 4, 2008, blacks turned out in numbers and overwhelmingly voted for Obama while most of the whites voted for McCain…who were the racist..??
Racism is pronounced when a white man says something negative(tho factual) to a black man….how many times have you heard a black man being charged with racism..compared to the white folks..??…in our scenario, the Tongas are the whites and the bembas are the blacks…unfortunately we shall have to live with it for a while if people like you continue commenting likewise…
      ..so just stop it…..

  18. Honestly PF is the most Tribalistic Party whether they like it or NOT HH is the NEXT PRESIDENT.

GOD is so GRACIOUS WE WANTED change in 2011 He granted it and WE PRAYED SO HARD TO VE SATA LEAVE PRESIDENCY and GOD HAS ANSWERED US AGAIN.
NOW GOD has put PF in CONFUSION FOR A REASON.

IT HH chabbe……….Viva Nalumango Viva UPND.

  19. imwe ba pf baffoon sort out your mess in your party that is 120 percent confused than bringing in issues which now no one can accept even in nothern luapula or muchipa provinces people will vote if they follow your stupidity then they will be to blame zambia has seen sense in the party upnd under hh so here we come. come 20 janaury in fact better start paying farmers maybe you will pick few votes in these provinces i mentioned to hell with your tribal foolish accusation which only found in pf zambia is for all zambians viva hh viva upnd

  20. So we hear that HH will win S/P, W/P, NW/P share Lus/P and Cen/P. In the same breath someone goes on to say his party is a Bantu- botatwe party because “he has failed to get votes from Formerly N/P and Luap/P”. Obviously E/P will go to MMD or PF IF E. Lungu is president for PF…….
Now who is being tribal here? So Luap/P and N/P will vote for the Benba-filled PF…. ( otherwise when did they ever vote for a non-bemba speaking candidate?) I hope all Zambians are judging what is going on.
Sata (MHSRP) had the most polarised cabinet and to the Northern colleagues that was not tribal.
I would like to urge us all to strive to safeguard the peace Zambia has enjoyed by being fair and reasonable.
HH would have ascended to corridors of power many moons ago if he hailed from the North. I…

    • Lets just introduce federalism and minimize this growing tribal polarization. Its my guess that is why Bulozi is pressing for restoration of the Barotse Agreement of 1964. I wish I could end the continuing Bemba – Tonga tribalism debate by borrowing two maximum security prisons and in BBA fashion lock up in equal number representation Bemba men and Tonga women in one then the reverse in the other until each group came up with a solution! It would maybe also help realization everyone is just human.

  21. Captain Thomas Sankala, this unfortunately is NOT a ‘proper context’ as you purport. Rather make it ‘proper context’ by listing the names of PF members of Parliament in Northern and Luapula provinces and see whether there is a Tonga or Lozi among them? The issue is provincial constituencies in rural areas in Zambia are inevitably represented by individuals from those areas. There usually are only one or two exceptions. You are also wrong in saying a president can only appoint ministers from his MPs. I just wish this was the case then Sata would not have unilaterally appointed MMD and UPND MPs as deputy ministers. Besides nominated members, a president can appoint any member of parliament from any political party as minister. Do not mislead the public with emotional postings.

    • I’m strong believer in debating with a sense of purpose and secondly using my brain to analyse issues. (“A brain is not a decoration on your shoulders” – Myles Munroe). Since its inception in 1997, UPND has only been led by two well-educated and rich tonga men. I can’t judge HH harshly because I don’t know him personally. However he is leading a party which has 95% of its MPS coming from one region. Gary Nkombo tried several times standing as an MP on the MMD ticket, he failed lamentably. He only got accepted in southern province when he stood on the UPND ticket. Check these facts because they will help you understand majority of UPND voters.

  22. There are only TWO TRIBES in Zambia that are bent on perpetuating TRIBALISM in Zambian politics – the Bembas and the Tongas. As far as they are concerned, only those two tribes are the ones that really matter in Zambian politics. However, no Bemba can ever win a presidential election purely on a Bemba vote. Similarly, no Tonga can ever hope to win a presidential election purely on a Tonga vote. So what is the deal? Why do they continue believing that they can afford to be tribal when tribalism can’t really take them anywhere?

Give me a single former president of Zambia who became president purely on a tribal vote? NONE. Why then this nonsensical notion that a tribal vote really matters? Is it not enough for all Zambians to see themselves as Zambians and nothing else?

    • @mei…
your assertion of only two tribes is a fantasy…in reality it not like that..if you are a bemba try to visit mongu one day and if you are a tonga try to visit luapula….in eastern province they go by the phrase…’wako ni wako’…
the sooner we stop taking about it the sooner this phenomenon shall disappear(may be in a hundred yrs time)…the tribalism aspect is being talked about now because our fore fathers talked about it and passed it own generation to generation..we must be the generation to start the process of jinking this jinx..
if you go to one of the pre- schools in Lusaka and observe the behaviour of the 4/5 year toddlers, you will never pick any signs of tribalism among them..if we the adults don’t share it with them, their society shall remain as is now

    • @ Scrutinizerer

You are addressing TRIBALISM generally while I am talking about TRIBALISM from a POLITICAL CONTEXT. Since 1964 Tongas and Bembas have consistently voted along tribal lines. Elsewhere in Zambia, people have learnt to vote across tribal lines.

Among Bembas, it is still a taboo for a Bemba to vote for a non-Bemba. Similarly, Tongas generally vote for their own. The voting pattern in other regions is different. They are able to vote for somebody who is not of their tribe even when they have a candidate who belongs to their tribe on the ballot paper. This is called non-tribal democracy. The Bembas and the Tongas are still toddlers with respect to non-tribal democracy.

    • @ mei….
I appreciate your line of thot………but the ‘general’ tribalism is the common denominator…all other form emanate from it…. so if you want to tackle any other form of tribalism be it political or at place of work etc….deal with the general problem first…..

  23. If we judge the candidates He Has stood against in the last couple of years, many will agree that, weighed pound for pound, HH is the heaviest.
But, regardless, the trend has been that only <3% of our colleagues in the North have seen it and voted for him.
Even during this election they will vote for their kin, in PF- we all know this party is chocking with them. you can rest assured.
Now these are the colleagues who keep singing about how "Tongas are tribal…" puliiiiiiizz!!!
spare the rest of us that rubbish. We are not sleeping and can see right through them!!!!

  24. Here is the ultimate absurdity of TRIBALISM in Zambian politics. The late Sata ran three times, and despite the Bemba vote, he failed to win the presidential election. The fourth time when he made it to State House, it was not the Bemba vote that took him there. However, as soon as he got to State House, the story changed that it was in fact a tribal vote that took him there. And what people started seeing going in and coming out of State House, with its hands akimbo, was TRIBALISM and nothing else.

HH too, will not be able to make it to State House purely on a TRIBAL vote. However, as soon as he gets to State House, that story may too change that it was in fact TRIBALIMS that helped him get there. But we can’t afford seeing a repeat of the Sata legacy of TRIBALISM.

  25. Recently I took a sponsored tour in Southern Province covering 3 districts namely Pemba, Choma and Kalomo. I am not going to bore you with the intricacies of my project there. What struck me most was the number of Bemba women I met there married to Tonga men- mumpali. It seems while the Bemba men are obsessed with tribalism, their womenfolk are trudging up those mountains in Southern Province without looking at the tribe of the man. There is this particular man (Mboole village) who has ten wives (he said he can afford it), the eighth is Bemba from village Kalasa Mukoso in Mansa district and the tenth is Namwanga from Isoka near Kampumbu village. In as far as our women are concerned there is no tribalism, it’s either you are a man or a woman -chapwa.

  26. So Zambians should ignore (HH) the biggest tribal monger who said UPND can never be led by anyone who is not of his”kith and kin”. This infant politician will leave to regret the day he uttered that tribal message. Normal Zambians have no faith in him. Abnormal bufoons like Mutale Nalumango trust the chap, shame. Wisdom is not common among common people

    • Just when level headed debate is about to establish as in the few comments above yours you spoil it with being mediocre in yours
