The Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) has disqualified Samuel Matete and three other apirants who wants to challenge incumbent president Elias Mpondela at next weekends elective annual general meeting.

ZAAA general secretary Phil Kubombela said Mpondela is unopposed after nominations for Matete and three other aspirants were declared invalid.

Kubombela said Matete’s nomination was written on unofficial form and that it was signed by someone who was not authorised to do so by their club Nkana Athletics Club who had already nominated Mpondela.

“You have a case where the club (Nkana) already nominated Mpondela but someone who had no authority decided to write a letter endorsing Matete who is not even a member of the club,” he said.

But Matete has dismissed ZAAA’s decision.

“I have not been informed about the development and as far as I am concerned I will contest the elections,” Matete said.

  1. what is wrong with Zambians? so it has come to pass when i overhead people saying this in social club. I thank Zambian for data they have.

    • Matete is arrogant, good choice
Anyone not knowing him will talk from their backside and condemn this decision
      NO

This is the right decision and believe you me , I know whats going on

This is the same man that was sent off during the 2012 Africa cup i was told

  2. ZAAA BULLSHIT. NO WONDER SPORTS MINISTER KAMBWILI INTERVENES IN MOST DECISIONS PASSED BY SPORTS BODIES.Y HONESTLY SHUD MPONDELA AND COHORTS FEAR TO B CHALLENGED AND BRING IN ANCIENT REASONS JUST BCOZ A MAN WHO HAS PROMISED FRED BLOOD WANT T STAND.LITTLE WONDER SPORTS LEVELS WILL REMAIN STAGNANT BCOZ OF NOT WANTG THE EXPOSED LIKE MATETE T B BLENDED IN SPORTS BODIES. CHISHIMBAYEE ! SYA !

  3. Matete should quickly apply for an njunction to stop the meeting from going ahead. We are fully aware of the briberies of delegates by Mpondela.
As long as we let Mpondela to be the sole candidate, Zambia will never improve in athletics.

    • I knew this was coming. Why is it that at every election Mpondela’s opponents are disqualified? How possible can it be that Mpondela is the only individual eligible to run for elections? When he (Mpondela) announced that he would contest for a seat at the IAAF no one has come up to bar him. Anyway, it is just a matter of time. God always has a way of dealing with Mpondela’s kind.

  4. Mpondela and his tricks. He seems to get away with everything he does; he gets Goverment jobs by being a cadre, he escapes in courts from cases of adultery by being a cadre, through bribery escapes national sports council cases of taking a girlfriend to an athletics tournament in place of a coach, has recognition in st.ignatius church by dirty tithe, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc

  5. National Sports Council should move in and let Matete to stand against mpondela who has nothing new to offer. If anything mpondela should simply step aside. Niwamuyaya?

    • Your suggestion is ideal but the problem is that the moment NSCZ get involved Mpondela will lodge a complaint with the IAAF, who shall then threaten to impose sanctions on the country’s athletes.

  6. Mpondela its too much now. Now I believe the rumours that he uses witchcraft. Power is sweet but give chance to others to run the organisation. Are you the only person available. You are so selfish you even killed your friend from depression after you grabbed his wife. Your time will come and you will have a terrible end. God is seeing your wickedness

  7. No this is nonsense why bar Matete??? Enough of Mpondela the man is a worthless cretin that has destroyed athletics in Zambia, ZAA would do much better with Matete a real athlete that is able to relate to other athletes..this is the same nonsense that Guy Scott is promoting in Zambia..the business of barring candidates..what a bad precedent that muzungo has brought to this nation..shame..

    • You started well with your comment but you destroyed it with your analogue. Just be honest; who barred others between Guy Scott and EL’s team? Didn’t EL’s hooligans prevent all the other candidates from going to Mulungushi to ensure on EL stood? Why do we twist facts?

  8. If I were one of those kids today trying to go further than Sammy did, I would be looking for inspirational leadership within the athletics body. One day one of those kids will be going for that job too. They will probably find themselves having to give up on that idea as the same guy will be stubbornly occupying the seat and refusing to give it up even with his Zimmer frame… now where does that kind of thinking come from…hmmm reminds me of…hmm…a certain generation who took over young but refuse to give way to a new generation. Endemic in our culture. Eradication required.

  9. The criminal is at it again. Trying to secure another term in office to embezzle more money from the Inter-Company Relay and athletes’ travel allowances.

  10. Mpondela should step aside and let new leadership come in. ZAAA has been stagnant and we haven’t really developed the sport under his leadership.

  11. Injunction would not work…Court are already dead in Zambia. The decision being made are from the ghost of the people who used to make decisions before they were killed by corruption.

  12. Isn’t this the same Mpondela who not long ago sponsored his girlfriend to go for Olympics and yet left out an athlete who was supposed to participate? Yet he still got away with it!

  13. Imwe bena Mpondela, why are you being retrogressive. Lekeni Chief atekeko. Mpondela has been using tricks and bribery to remain in his position.

I’m urging Chief to pursue this matter further, involve the National Sports Council. What has Mpondela achieved since he ascended to presidency? Chief is the only capable guy who can propel this organisation forward given his exposure at international events. He is known and can easily rub shoulders with IAAF echelon.

  14. Mpondela is behavin lyk sepp blatter,my whole lyf I hav only known 1 fifa president and that is sepp blatter and my whole lyf I hav only known 1 zaa president and that is mpondela

  15. Ba Kambwili incito iyi, this Mpondela guy has been at the same position since 1980s when U Kambwili was a pupil pa Mpatamato Sec School. Athletics are dead here in Zambia, our neighbours Botswana are far ahead of us bushe ku fwila pakapuna, as Minister of Sports intervene, we want our young ones to be exposed, surely there is a way out of this! eish when are we going to do the correct things?

  16. Problem is that mpondela has turned the ZAAA presidency into a full time job, this is a part time, in fact should be non compesating. Just like FIFA, ICO, IAAF presidency, these chaps always want to stick to these positions for 40yrs plus because of the pilfrage that goes on. In the meantime, what can mpondela show to have achieved in all his time as president? you only hear him when there is a corporate fun run, of course just for the money. Otherwise, athletics development is at its lowest and he still wants to stick around? Shame on you shorty!

  17. Any right thinking Zambian with love for the development and success of athletics would stand down and allow others with fresh and progressive ideas to lead the association. What new ideas does Mpondela have to tender after so many years at the helm? Because of his character and undignified standing, he gives the association a bad name. He should have left the stage a longtime ago when the applause was loud!!

  18. Dear Bashi Suwilanji,

Please point at a single success story that can be attributed to you in the discipline of athletics in Zambia. As far as my memory serves me..zero.
Athletics in Zambia is now synonymous with intercompany relays and all that rubbish. Look at our neighbours and the list of athletes who have flown their flags high.Back high its only Matete way back 24 years ago.Mr Matete if you can read this, please obtain a court injuction to restrain those Elements from infringing on your constitutional rights. Please get professional legal advice so that you don’t botch this opportunity to rid ourselves of the cameraman,Elias.
We are having another Kalu situation at ZAAA and it has to come to an end.

  19. This is happening in almost all clubs, parties, everything! We have people that just want to hold on to power, even when they know that they can not perform. This culture must change if we are to move forward. Why must one be president of an organization for 1,000 years?

  20. From politics to sport to company managements the behavior is just the same: Everyone appears to lay eggs and sit over them forever without them hatching so they can get up and walk the chicks. What is with Zed kansi? @A Phiri Anabwera has put it very well. Let those that came in early exit now – it is time for a change … and I mean in as many things as possible; just don’t go change your wife.
