Why is each TV station in Zambia demanding it’s own decoder

110ThreeDecoders

Dear Editor,

Kindly may I air my observation in regard to the above subject on your much read site

I wish to find out from the knowledgeable about the Digital Migration programme for the TV stations in Zambia. We have ZNBC TV, MUVI TV, Prime Time TV, Mobi TV, CBC TV, TBN TV and probably others I may not know because they do not have strong signal.

Muvi have their decoder already being sold. ZNBC are now advertising. My question is, How many decoders will each household have in the sitting room to be able to access all these TV stations?

Are we turning our homes into small studios? Cant ZNBC being or Ministry of Information come up with an arrangement where all the TV stations come up with an agreement so we use just one decoder to access all of them? People already have DSTV, My TV Africa, now there is ZUKUS, GO TV which already are too many. Much as we like to access all these TV stations it will be better if the authorities come up with a system where we just buy one decoder instead a decoder for every TV station. Whenever there is a new TV station, they just incorporate. We can be paying one off and they will know how to share the money themselves.

Or maybe I am the only one who is behind while something is already being done? If not, can the relevant authorities please do something in this regard. It should not be just a matter of us giving business to manufacturers of these decoders.

  1. The entire belief system is “symbolic and representational”, of a phantom god born of a virgin, of a resurrection that never was, of a man who never lived.

    • Maggot brain … think before you spew vomit all over. What in name of your master the devil has digital migration got to do with your bigoted innuendo about a faith, which more than half the worlds population on earth hold dear. Are you schizophrenic please have you head examined maybe the brain has left

    • @1. I pray that the Almighty Creator have mercy upon your soul. Please ask for forgiveness and repent.

  2. Posts 1&2 are both bigoted and incoherent.

That aside, the author’s observation requires a proper response.
The TV stations must not become hardware retail dealers.

For example, in the UK there is Sky TV. One can watch nearly all available television and radio stations and channels.

    • In addition to the above post, Sky TV sometimes carries footage for and on behalf of other content providers such as BT Sports, and even advertise on their behalf. I’m not sure what the ownership of BT Sports is, but they usually carry live football matches which are not covered by Sky Sports.

Other TV content such as Chelsea, Man U, and Liverpool also air their content on Sky TV channels including ESPN, provided you subscribe to each of those individually usually online. So each get their money directly while you get your content through the Sky Decorder.

More like the way ZNBC is currently accessible through Multichoice DSTV decorder. So it’s an issue of separating the subscription package and interconnecting.

However, even in the UK if you wanted to change to Virgin TV or…

    • However, even in the UK if you wanted to subscribe to Virgin TV, or Talk TV, or any other smaller providers of cable TV, you may need to change the hardware, and they charge you some change-over cost, unless you migrate during a no-charge promotion period. In that case they take away your previous infrastructure and bring in compatible ones to their signals…

So it’s Upto you to pick which provider contains most of the content you need or I deed to have each provider’s decoder in your house.

The only question is how and when will you watch them all? I’ve never been able to watch all the channels on just one provider be it DSTV, SKY, or even the two Channel ZNBC or single Muvi-TV channel at the time….

    • In the UK if one wants virginmedia you need a Vergin box, if you want Sky you need a sky box, if you and youview you need a you view box, same thing

    • Someone just described something i have been thinking, this trend is everywhere in zed,
      Even companies,
we have a lot small locally owned companies but people cant just come and work together to form something bigger.

    • Funny why good christians have to be told to be kind !
I’ve always believed that kindness is instilled in us in our very nature. Some of the kindest and gentlest people that I’ve known were non-believers.

  3. Well said. The issue of decoders surely needs ZICTA/Ministry of Information to URGENTLY address. Are our homes going to be mini studios with various decoders?. Some stations risk losing out as many may not be too keen to purchase their decoders knowing too well that such persons already have say DSTV and ZNBC decoders. Smaller stations surely should join the fight for a SINGLE decoder which say can have a provision for multiple cards for each station we subscribe too.

    • We definitely need one decoder. This is an opportunity for some serious mind to come up with a single Zambian Decoder, which will show Zambian TV Channels. DSTV started like that.

  4. I have been struggling with the same challenge. I hope someone from Ministry of communication is listening. I do not need a studio in my small house. Technology has improved so much no need for duplications.

  5. We’re living in a liberalised world, every business wants to stand out over the others. Incorporation may be difficult as some channels have less viewers.

  6. In UK you only need one digital decoder but you pay extra to access other providers. If you are on virgin and want to watch football which is on BT and Sky you just pay more for the services

  7. Why not one SIM for all mobile phone service providers, this ZICTA can also do? I dislike multiple phones just to have all services and usually good phones have only a single SIM provision!

  8. It is just tiring and inconveniencing to switch on and off decoders each time you want to see something different! Can these people simplify our lives please!

  9. Not true coz in the UK you have sky, virgin or cable TV BT, TalkTalk TV, Free view which need individual decoders. Virgin and BT have an agreement where Virgin and BT customers could buy and watch sky channels even if they do not subscribe to sky TV. It is not easy to come up with this arrangement and these companies trust each other to remit what is due to the other company. Its different from free to air run by ZNBC studios that’s why you cannot watch without a decoder. You cannot access virgin or talktalk TV with on sky. .
One has to understand how the TV signal is transmitted nowadays especially with decoders. Each subscriber’s signal is transmitted using the similar signal like that of a mobile phone and this way the studios could easily disconnect your signal.

  10. If i choose not to buy a ZNBC decoder why should I pay a tv levy since my Tv will be rendered useless without their decoder . In this regard why should I pay for a signal that I,m not using . In short things appear to go commercial as such TV levy should be abolished as people should choose and buy the content that they like.

  11. It is indeed very unfair to FORCE people to pay znbc TV levy when they don’t even watch the channel! It is tantamount to STEALING in broad day light!

  12. It sounds like there’s some ‘ignorance’ about this issue in Zambia and contributors thus far as none seems to explain properly the issue properly.

First I guess by ‘decoder’ you mean a Set-top box. Yes there are integrated and Hybrid set-top boxes that you could use but that will depend on content delivery TV stations.

There should be a difference between ‘Pay-TV’ and ‘Free-to-air’ television. The former usually would include ‘locked’ devices that contain copyrighted content that you will need before the signals end up in your TV. For free-to-air, you should never need a set-top box as most digital TVs these days come with internal tuners that should enable your TV to receive digital content. Unless of course you are still using analog TVs which is rare.

    • However, for you to receive free TV signals on any TV-ready or ‘universal’ set-top box (aka decoder) for those with analog TVs, you need these stations to come together under some umbrella which will dictate uniform technical requirements of products and devices across the board and certify them, including set-top boxes and digital TVs… e.g. check ‘Freeview’ in Australia or UK.

Certification requirements is particularly important as this will dictate standards, content format and codecs (e.g. H.264/MPEG-4 AVC vs MPEG-2).

I mean that’s the whole point of migrating to Digital. You can’t leave each television station to do what they like because there will be chaos. And you don’t even need govt or ZICTA for this… stations can form an alliance of their own.
