Police in Lusaka are currently searching the residence of UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema.
Another search operation is underway at the UPND Secretariat in Lusaka.
Around 20 heavily armed police officers are at Mr Hichilema’s house in Kabulonga search for undisclosed materials in the presence of his lawyers.
Some Journalists from Muvi TV and the Daily Nation are said to have been allowed to join the search operation at the opposition leader’s house.
It is unclear whether Mr Hichilema is present during the search.
Some UPND sympathisers are at the Secretariat to offer support.
This follows President Edgar Lungu’s directive to the police yesterday to immediately question Mr Hichilema over his claims that he has accessed to intelligence reports before Mr Lungu.

HH is leader and he must be careful what he says but again if Lungu is confident that he is in control he must take such statements as politicking he can’t search every jim and jack who works up one morning and claims that he has this and that Zambia is not a police state, he is now scared of his own shadow.
This is a missed priority, diverting efforts & energies on such things. You definitely do have a point. However, the police are doing it in the best interest of all parties i think. The journalists are only observing just like Mr. HH’s lawyer to make sure that, if they find something it should clear to all that such a thing was indeed in the house and not planted by the police.
The search i believe is on a room by room basis with everyone in the same room at any given moment and journalists will not touch a thing in the search. No evidence will be compromised and no planting of evidence.

I am not UPND and I am just a Zambian. This will make HHs sympathisers stronger. Police could have just interrogated HH to be seen to protect national interest. Searching a house is intrusive and many will not rule out the ruling party as accelerating political advantage over a second and strongest of the opposition.

The President informed the nation when he was swearing in Deputy IG Malcom Mulenga recently that he will never interfere with the police service operations and will not even direct them to arrest any citizen. The same promise was repeated when he was opening Misisi police post. How come he has broken his promise so soon?

Even in America when American security is threatened, the American President instructs forces to forestall any threat. I am a supporter of HH, not as a person, but for what he represents. I dont really agree with what he said, that he has access to OP security briefing before the president lays hold of it. You claim President ECL won 7 provinces! Are you sure? Are you adding Central Province to President ECL? I thought HH got more (54% 68,000 Votes to ECL 41% 53,0000 votes) in Central Province that makes 4 provinces won by HH. Don’t start claiming its because Itezhi Tezhi was aligned to Central. Even if you subtract Itezhi Tezhi (HH 8’521) it still gives HH more votes by 7,000. So did he really just win 3 provinces?

I remember HH claiming victory before anybody could even caste a vote during the presidential by election. Now he claims that he is controlling OP even before anyone votes for him.
