MMD slams impeachment maneuvers

Share

The ruling MMD in Lusaka Province has strongly condemned efforts being made to try and impeach President Rupiah Banda.

Provincial Chairman Cleophas Chimembe says the scheme will not succeed as the republican president was elected and mandated by the people of Zambia to rule the nation.

Mr. Chimembe told ZANIS in an interview that such actions are meant to disrupt the peace and tranquility the nation is currently enjoying.

He charged that failed politicians are trying to incite Zambians to rise against the government through civil disobedience and other such anti social activities which are against the norms of democracy.

Mr Chimembe warned that such actions are treasonable under the law and urged law enforcement agencies to move in quickly and arrest the perpetrators before they cause any serious damage.

Mr Chimembe said all well meaning Zambians should give their full and unquestionable popular support to President Banda.

He appealed to Zambians to take note of civil wars taking place in some African countries adding that Zambians risk falling in the same trap if the current peace is lost.

The Lusaka Province MMD Chairman also appealed to opposition political party leaders to show maturity by accepting in totality the verdict of the people and learn to engage constructively with the government of the day.

He said it is regrettable that some opposition leaders are only out to fight the government when the truth of the matter is that the MMD Government has implemented many serious and effective programmes which are benefiting the majority of Zambians.

The Lusaka Province MMD Chairman said the MMD general membership is solidly behind President Banda and will do whatever it takes to protect the presidency and the nation.

  1. Bobchinsky and Dobchinsky will stand by their man, however if there is grounds for impeachment, kuya bebele!

  2. Chimembe ulicipuba. Impeachement through parliament is very legal. Think before you open your speech orifice.

  3. Bashi Chimembe…
yes even elected heads of state can be impeached if they are found to have broken the rule-constitution..mwilatina if he is popular and is doing good as u say then u shud not fear mwana…uletiina ati ninshi twaleka ukwisa utuma brown envelopes?ulechimona

  4. Ba Chimembe, what are you talking about? Do you even know the definition of democracy? Democracy is not defined according to the MMD ideas of it. Democary goes beyond your fears as MMD. Read this yourself: Mr Chimembe warned that such actions are treasonable under the law and urged law enforcement agencies to move in quickly and arrest the perpetrators before they cause any serious damage. What is treason to you? Even the most popular Government is liable to impeachment Chimembe. Don’t be shallow minded. I know you are browning you lips. In MMD, the ‘browner’ one’s lips are the better the chances of appointments. No surprise on Chimembe. Next time you hear he will be Ambasador in Bolivia.

  5. uyo banda u say he’s doing good …his masses have lost jobs and a day like today was a very good opportunity to try and reassure them ati fikaba bwino…….even if u wont deliver…..show some commitment to act on their plight….nomba imwe mwaya ku salsbury yaba

  6. For the first time in as many years, the president was no there to observe labour with the working masses. I don’t remember Super Ken, kaFred and LPM missing labour day. Nomba RBB ashila ba Austin Liato, yangu tata.

  7. Its very surprising that calling for impeachment is illegal. Ba chimembe or whatever your name is, what case will the law enforcement officers charge the people who want to impeach the president, with? In actual fact, you are the one who is supposed to be arrested for informing that nation that people following the constitution, that your president swore to protect and defend. If the president has done something wrong that calls for impeachment, let it be done according to the law. Why is it that its always against the law when someone disagrees with the president LEGALLY and never illegal when someone agrees with him illegally? Why are G. Kundas actions legal, according to the MMD? So iwe just shut up and stop following and openning your corrupt mouth on things you don’t even…

  8. Why should all well meaning Zambians give their full and unquestionable popular support to your President Banda who hasnt done anything since he was elected apart from being a Jonie walker?Let the people decide and dont intimidate them you cadre.

  9. If Chimembe and his colleagues were literate enough, they would read this blog and learn what they missed in school. RBs anointed one, Levy, likened Zimbabwe to a sinking Titanic. He was called a traitor to M16 and CIA by Mugabe. How then does our very own RB go to pledge our hard earned Tax? limbi kuti yaba ni Senile Dementia. Can Chimembe tell us which philosophy guides the MMD government? pantu even Kaunda’s Party and its Government (PIG) had Humanism guiding us, where do we stand now under MMD? because “anyone who stands for nothing can fall for anything.” ‘elyo uwa kwensha ubushiku kamo ali na torch,’ and this torch is a philosophy. These characters need the help of this blog, and once they discover it , bakalamoneka kwati baliba sana knowlegeable, kanshi ni bu mpanda mano bwa…

  10. This is very true. The retired General Miyanda is a case in point. He has never resigned from any of the previous governments in which he served. His Presidents were the least undemocraic and one of them was plundering the country while Miyanda was his number 2. There was a coup attempt in both governments he served and he happened to be out of the country mysteriously. Now he wants to incite from within by calling for impeachment. Sata is better, because WYSIWYG. General Miyanda is a trained killer and he does it under that ‘Mr Cool’ facade and ‘Christian’ profession.

  11. These are circus dreams of bad losers turning anarchists. Impeachment is not based on irrationality and a wishful dream one has against the incumbent but constitutionality. These scumbags have neither the constitutional quorum nor legal basis to realize any fantasy dream they have in conspiracy to push the country into anarchy. They cannot even table the monition in parliament. The Speaker will outrightly trash their petition. Look at Miyanda, with no single vote in Parliament. Sata is a titular tribal bigot who has lost 20 legislative votes now with the MMD remaining with useless19. HH who has wrecked Mazoka’s once alternative Government in waiting has very insignificant legislative voice with most MPs too close to MMD

  12. There are very few if not zero UPND MPs who would side with these tribal convergents conspiring anarchy on the country. UPND is on a more rational and futuristic patriotic side of the divide with skills to read through the fantasy and conspiracies of tribal bigots gambling their time. It is irrational to dream that MMD legislators at most would betray the people of Zambia for anarchists to reign over reason and peace. But I have trust in the patriotic Zambian citizenry that like always, they are up to the task of decisively placing anarchists where they belong. They tabled the impeachment against Mwanawasa claiming he was not supposed to rule because he was from a minority tribe. In that, they came out bruised and this time they are heading a some severe humiliation and irrelevancy.

  13. This is what is really amazing and worrisome about this MMD government of Mr. Banda, that even things that are provided for in our constitution are considered “illegal” as long as they are directed at member of his government. What is truly astounding is not that those who make these outrageous statements are not only ignorant of the constitution, but that the president and those around him who ought to know better, allow these things and these party cadres to continue to make these statements!! How long can this be allowed to go on for? This man is really turning into the shame of our nation in the eyes of the world.

  14. Zambians are really playng with fire. It seems the divisions are just growing and growing – before we know we will be like the Congo or Somalia not able to solve our divisions.

  15. No one is talking about blood shed here. People are only calling about using what has been enshrine in the constituition to make zambia a good government and punishing poor leaders. Fear of the unknow has cause this country to be the poorest of the poor in the midst of abandance mineral resources. We tend to protect leaders even when we know that they are taking the country backwards. RB has failed teribly.

  16. If Impeachment was done on the wish of every jerk, late Mwanawasa could have lnot entered his second year. Today again, the impeachment hallucination is drumbeating against RB by unmandated losers.Whats the wait? To think the Speaker in an MMD heavy chamber would take a motion that has no life or capable of marshalling a Quoran support is political hallucination.

  17. Bwafya you can say what you like but Zambia is not like other places in Africa or the world. Banda has not murdererd people or imprisoned people or stolen billions of dollars as we have already discussed – so I dont really see the need to impeach him. If anything any form of political instabiltiy will scare away potential investors who are guarding their money in these times of economic uncertainty. Rabble rousing is not going to help the average Zambian.

  18. Talk of impeachement is just a waste of time and resources. What the opposition should do is consolidate their positions and policies for the next election. Rabble rousing serves no one. Even in mature democracies, it is not easy to get rid of an encumbent leader. I am all for freedom of speech but unless the current leader has caused the death of thousands of people or imprisoned those with divergent views then I see no cause for the impeachment processs we need to cultivate a strong and stable democracy which means that we all need to act responsibly.

  19. This MMD cadre surely must understand that even if you were genuinely elected and thus mandated to rule, a breach of the constitution (the supreme law of the land) still remains an impeachable offense regardless of who you are – RB, FTJ, KK, Levy etc. It shouldn’t even be viewed as a partisan issue; it is a serious national issue cutting across party lines. During the Watergate scandal, some of the most aggressive and vociferous inquisitors were people like Senator Howard Baker who, like the man who was the object of impeachment, President Nixon, was a fellow Republican.

  20. So what exactly are the impeachable offences that have been committed by RB in particular as the offence itself is not quite clear? Just because one does not agree with the impeachment process that does not automatically mean that one is an MMD cadre by the way. I am simply questioning the motives for people taking such a stance. I am merely interested in the well being of the country and its people and not any politician.

  21. A private newspaper called the monitor uncovered the above story. Let me dig it up and show it to everyone and I hope LT wont moderate my coming comments.

    PLOT TO IMPEACH RB EXPOSED
Story By Salome Matantilo and Roy Habaalu

SOME named opposition leaders in collaboration with some Lusaka Lawyers are reportedly drafting an impeachment motion against President Rupiah Banda for allegedly breaching the Republican constitution.

Sources hinted to the Monitor & Digest, during the week that the named opposition leaders met to discuss the possible impeachment of President Rupiah Banda.

“The two opposition leaders met at some house in Kalundu and discussed the possibility of impeaching President Banda on the basis of the Dora Siliya findings,” said the source…

  22. “We are surprised with the Dennis Chirwa Tribunal findings; we wonder why the learned members of the bench decided to talk about issues of impeachment of the President in the Dora tribunal findings when it wasn’t probing the President.”

The source said the “empire” that has risen against President Banda is “tenacious and relentless.”

“It will continue to derail his development agenda to the detriment of the country. Banda should deal with them decisively since this is the only reason they have mounted a war against him and his government,” said the source,

  23. “This clique is so desperate that it is only preoccupied with activities such as an impeachment motion against him. Their activities that are designed to portray him (President Banda) as a failure, as corrupt and as a political liability to Zambia.”

The source said the impeachment motion was premised on the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) and United Party for National Development (UPND) Members of Parliament.

“They proponents of the impeachment motion are dependant on the MPs from the UPND and PF and some disgruntled MMD MPs who are bitter with President Banda,” the source revealed.

  24. But when contacted for comment Patriotic Front (PF) leader, Michael Sata said he was not aware of the moves to impeach President Banda.

“I am not aware of the moves to impeach President Banda,” he said.

He said he had not yet been approached by anyone, including the UPND on the impeachment motion. UPND president, Hakainde Hichilema said he had no specific comment on the alleged impeachment motion. Hichilema however said that now that the Dennis Chirwa tribunal had found former Communication and Transport Minister, Dora Siliya wanting, “it means that RB (President Banda) and George Kunda must go.”

  25. He said President Banda and Vice President Kunda’s support for Dora over the RP capital and the ignoring of advice from the Attorney General’s advice amounts to corruption.

“The support of these two people clearly shows that Dora was instructed by the President to sign the agreement between RP Capital and the Zambian government and the cost of the cancellation o the agreement should be met by Dora, George and RB,” he said.

Hichilema said Dora did not resign earlier because she was supported by the President and the Vice President Kunda.

  27. Zambia is a peaceful country and is for Zambians, insinuations , innuendos are catalysts of anarchy. Clandestine meetings under a multiparty system are very much legal, unless plotting to kill , and if the meeting is based on legal reasoning what is treasonable about it …. being an alarmist is near to treason

  28. These are epileptic convulsions of confused bitter heads run out of ideas, time and under pressure from Angel investors they got 2008 campaign funds from. Like always, they resort to rumbling none material options. I challenge them or their cadres here to articulate grounds of building a successful impeachment motion admissible before the speaker for adjudication. Statutorily and constitutionally show us one binding ground. MMD must dismiss this hogwash impeachment talk show with contempt it deserves. Keep them scrambling for space in tabloids while you are activating and consolidating grassroot structures across the country side.

  29. Whether the President attends Labour Day or not , he has his Ministers to represent him. The trip to Zimbambwe was equally important. He was invited to grace the Zimbambwe International Trade Fair by the Unity Government which we all wanted to see through. Lets us stop politiking cos no President is an island. Presidents invite each to grace this or that function. On impeachment, we never get tired of politiking, time for by elections is gone now is time to help RB to govern the nation. Every political leader is entitled to make constructive critisms. As Zambianslet us get serious and sort out our problems at individual level first then as a nation. The Lusaka province Chairman should stop politiking any how. Impeachment for what? Please recruit more members in Lusaka for 2011 elections.

  30. Zambia suffered a lot to free Zimbabwe and those fools have shown very little gratitude for this. We have enough woes here for this Banda to put us second in priority to ungrateful Rhodesians, enough is enough, impeach the *****.

  31. Impeachment, ha—wow!

And what exactly are the grounds for this political theater? The opposition parties in Zambia are really becoming a joke. Is this really what being an opposition party means? You guys should wake up before you completely become an OBSSESED PARTY. If the grounds for your impeachment talk is as laid out by “Free-Market-Economist” on this blog, then I suggest you guys get an education—and I seriously mean that. Who in the world, even with only a basic understanding of the Zambian constitution, would even “entertain a thought” of impeaching a duly elected president, let alone “talk about it”, based on these flimsy reasons.

  32. contued from #35

When exactly did presidential “mediocrity” and/or “ineptness” become an impeachable offense in the Zambian constitution? Can someone educate me here?! I know you have the right as Zambians to say these things, but what you don’t have is the right to dupe other Zambians into unnecessary conflicts. If you are really serious about being future states-men and states-women, I suggest you show some maturity in your politicking and behavior. By the way, I am no MMD lover either, but your triviality is alarming!

  33. RB is not Zambian, that is enough reason to have him impeached!! He was born in Zimbabwe to Malawian parents.

  34. I do not always agree with Mulongoti but on this issue, I see the point he is trying to make. All of us have opinions and these may be different, but most of us will never be heard by Joe Bloggs in the general public but go to the Registrar of Societies and call yourself ‘Blah blah blah for blah blah Association’ NGO and you have an audience! Democracy is the people’s voice not brief case NGOs. This voice of the people is exercised at the ballot. The role of the media is to inform, so that we make informed choices. But what is happening in Zambia today is that people are not being informed they are being conformed! I have as much right to an opinion as XYZ, but just because I have no outlet because I do not own a news paper does not mean XYZ who does is right and I anm wrong.

  35. 37 Momo
Do not re-invent the wheel. There is a Supreme Court rulling on the matter of Zambian citizenship. You could be cited for contempt because yuo are suggesting that the Chief Justice broke the law by allowing a foreigner not only to run for President but also to be declared duly elected.

  36. # 37 Momo,

Your confusion is no different from your whore who thinks sex work is her future.Have you ever read the constitution? No wonder your father has lived a poverty striken life without educatinon.RB like many of our parents were ingenous fighters in life. They walked to Southern Rhodesia for opportunities when your parents chose ukulanyenganafwe.

  37. As quickly as can be done, those behind these calls for impeachment should confronted and brought to book. The calls for impeachment are out of malice and disgruntlement. We know for sure the debt that some people accumulated over the years which will be impossible to pay in their lifetime. Miyanda, sends his wife to sale vegetables at soweto and he himself is ever driving wrecks of vehicles, he is a highly desperate man. Sata has always been power hungry.

  38. For me, the call for impeachment is tantamount to a call for war and it is highly seditious to even imagine that such thoughts could be entertained. Let them try!

  39. It is very irresponsible that such disgruntled elements of our society should even have a platform to spew their venom. A follow up to this clandestine grouping will definitely be done. The various facets of the enemies of the state must be looked at very seriously if we are to Progress as a nation.

  40. The reckless pursuit of power by some will be their doom! The greed that some people seem to have transcends imagination. The clear loss PF suffered has helped to expose how self centred some people are beyond any reasonable doubt. Perhaps, they suppose that we are weak? Then let us put them to the Test!

  41. What will happen if they get what they want is that they will be fighting amongst themselves. This move is about self interests it is not about the welfare of the Zambian people. Miyanda does not even know how to behave as an opposition leader. People condemn RB for travelling around without seeing that what he is doing is actually strategic. Up to now, I have not seen any alternative policies regarding the current economic crisis we are facing from the opposition. The pricie of copper has stabilised, some mining companies are no longer going to close their operations so what exactly can these plotterers bring to the table. We should never take our peace and stability for granted. I have met many people from war torn countries and I pray everyday that Zambia never goest through that ever.

  42. It only takes a spark to light a fire. One gun shot in Sarayevo, started the First world war. One broadcast ignited the Rwanda genocide. We should use democracy wisely. Those who have evidence of plunder (Like Mr Sata always alleges he has) should seek redress through legal means and report to the ACC and police. If they do not trust these institutions, they should participate in the NCC to strengthen them. they should take a leaf from Mr Harrington. One thing though, the law should be changed so that one doesn’t have to engage expensive lawyers to bring a complaint.

  43. #37 Momo
    For your education:
Constitution of Zambia. Part II (As amended by Act No. 18 of 1996) 4. (1) Every person who immediately before the commencement of this
constitution was a citizen of Zambia shall continue to be a citizen of
Zambia after the commencement of this Constitution.

  44. #40 Isn’t the Chief Justice Mr. Enerst Sakala? another Malawian….please. RB is not Zambian pure and simple!

#48 RB’s parents were not Zambian citizens but inhabitants of Fort Jameson (Chipata’s previous name) which was part of Malawi at the time. The fact that he was not born in Zambia weakens his case further. In an equal and fair setting, RB should not have been allowed to participate in elections because he is not eligible and his presidency is potentially void and illegal.

  45. THE SAINT,

As distinctively knowledgable, sober and and mature as you have sufficietly espoused in your discourse, why waste your time giving a human face to # 49 a pathetically shallow kid? Ask him to go impeach the head of state period.

  46. My intial reaction is what would an impeachment of a sitting President entail? Would ther be bye elections again? Would the Vice President be required to continue to 2011? Can some learned fellow educate us please.

  47. When are we going to grow up and stop playing this game of who is and who isnt a Zambian? All this rubbish that was brought in by Chiluba should be thrown back in his face. Why is it usually only people from Eastern who are accused of not being Zambian? Given the fact that our country shares a border with eight countries, it is intriguing to notice that you hardly ever hear of someone being accused of being an Angolan, a Tanzanian or Motswana etc.

  48. I WILL NOT ALLOW TO BE IMPEACHED …. I WOULD WILL DISSOLVE PARLEY AS SOON AS I SENSE DANGER……WHO IS MIYANDA…..A BITTER LOSER. WHO IS HE REPRESENTING WITH HIS 0.0005% OF THE NATIONAL VOTE! SICK ZEADIANS WILL ACCEPT ANY NONSENSE.

  49. Impeach him for giving maize to Mugabe not that nonsense of him not being zambian. The guy is not working, he should have learnt somenting from Mwanawasa but i guess he was just a passenger. He needs to be impeached.

  50. Momo
ba#49 naimwe where are you from?. Primitive thinking ka? anyway you should try to choose civility. Fort Jameson was Malawi? Ya Ya YAh guys, where are we headed. People like you just make things worse. Anyway am not gonna waste my time talking to smeone who does’nt even know things they talk about. Get your civics and geography right
