Hunger stricken Zimbabweans scrounge for food in Zambia

Share

Severe hunger is forcing Zimbabweans to cross Lake Kariba into Zambia in search food in the Namafulo, Mweeba and Kanchindu areas in Chief area in Sinazongwe District.

A local businessman Dodo Sindaza said most of the Zimbabweans are old men, women, and youths.

Mr. Sindaza said the situation was bad because the Zimbabweans were selling chickens at K3, 000 each, to enable them  buy a bag of mealie-meal. He said the hunger-striken Zimbabweans do not know much about the Zambian currency and end up selling their commodities below the market value.

One Zimbabwean Tolo Munkombwe said the hunger situation in Zimbabwe was unbearable as there was completely no food in that country. Mr. Munkombwe said all the shops were closed because there was no food in them and people have no money with which to buy commodities.

He said schools in Binga town have been closed and teachers have run away due to food shortage.Mr. Munkombwe who is from Siamwenya Village in Binga Town said people have resorted to batter system because the Zimbabwean currency has lost value.

“If you want to jump on a bus to go to any town from Binga, drivers are demanding to be paid a bag of mealie-meal which is difficult to come accross,” Mr. Munkombwe said.

  1. sad state of affairs. In this age and era, what is wrong with that curio like……. Mugabe making his own people suffer like this. Enough is enough !

  2. Fellow Bloggers this is not very far from us look at how people are suffering even n our country…the power sharing thing is Zimbabwe is not a solution…a typical scenario of power hungry and what individualism can do to the masses…

  3. LT, the picture you have used is not from Zimbabwe. That is the picture of an Ethiopian child. I wish u could scout for the real stuff.

My heart goes to Zimbabweans. I pray God will find a good leader to save them in this trying time.

  4. ZANU-PF is the inspiration behind PF (Zambia). They have the same party symbol (clenched fist), their foreign policy is the same, they believe in grabbing from the ‘rich’ to give the ‘poor’ party cadres.
The (Zambia) PF manifesto talks about taking away 25% of ownership from productive foreign investment and dishing it out to party cadres.
Zimbabwe is almost dictatorship – someone said something about dictatorship being good. Is this good?

  5. #9 Do you realise, that this could have happened here? mek we give thanks to his MAJESTY. The ignorant pipo may just have saved us, mek we chant praises to JAH thru his SON Ras Jesus christ. Big up uno dem

  6. People, i must say personally, am tired of hearing about zimbabwe. The country makes headlines daily with no solution for its problems anywhere in sight.
Could the zimbabweans sort out their issues as unfortunately, they’re the only ones that can!

  7. It’s sad to read about Zimbabwe. Though I seem not to forget how they laughed at us when we bought buttercup margarine from their beloved country.

AND then Mugabe that statement about ‘having nothing to learn from Zambia’. But he is failing to convince his country men that there nothing good in Zambia.

    Shemuna — shame on Mugabe.

  8. #18 U must B out of yo senses, chase who??? U can make a worse dictator than wat U acuse of Mugabe.
Show U care by encouraging each one of us 2 join hands as a pipo fighting 4 Zimbambwe, than silly Ideas U’r bringing. Zimbabwean problem is yo problem”Yes We Can” not yeS theY caN.
#8 U weaned frm same Breast with #18 no wonder yo thinkin is same, why degrade pipo jst coz they are cadres…are U tellin me cadres do not deserve good life so much that U hv no thought of sharing with the watsover.U want the rich to kip their riches & remain poorer??
Shame on U. No wonder U choose 2B 3rd Wife, if anything U dont even qualify 2 B a wife but a PlayGirl/Wmn.swallow yo thots lest Gods wrath 4 on U.

  9. LT pls write a poster “SEVERE HUNGER CAUSE CHILDREN TO ABANDON SCHOOLS” Put it at churundu boarder and some entry points from zambia to zimbabwe so that they stop coming here. We’re also suffering,RB didnt fufil his promise.

  10. If leaders of Africa can come out real like Levy Mwanawasa and Botswana President,Zimbabwe I tell you can be saved.AU is championed with leaders like Gadaffi who have taken a country a personal to holder.
    Shame African Leaders.

  11. OH MY. African politicians. out of touch with reality. someone. help the zimbabweans.pliz. twapapata. abantu bela chula so.

  12. I dont give a dime mabout the situation in Zimbabwe, the only pity is that the citizens are denied their popular choice for president by the rural voters just like in Zambia. Its a pity that we are not being ruled by the president we really wanted. Our president is micheal the Angel sata. We shall really be free and happy when he comes into power. Viva Sata, Viva PF

  13. #15 you are correct. The same situation would have happened to Zed if PF won the elections.! Shame on Mugabe

  14. Sata’s third wife # 8.. THANK YOU! Finally someone see’s what i have noted ZANU-PF & PF one and the same. Sata wants to be like Mugabe when he grows up..trust me.

  15. SATA = MUGABE

Kwena Lesa waluse. God saved us from this demented and sick man. Mr Sata was raised a thief. He never went past Grade 4. His best friends are Kaponyas. He is so egoistic and he doesn’t see that a normal person will never vote for a candidate who throws brass-knucle fists at Citizens. He storms into meetings where Zambians judges are. If the guy has no respect for citizens, no respect for judges…oh My God, this is even worse than Mugabe.

Thank God! Thank God! Sata had to lose. Look at his picture, just look at him. Does he inspire anybody. I have serious doubts about the integrity and spirituality of people who are willing to support Sata. They are sick!

  16. #33 and #34 you are unfair guyz. we are facing the same problem as zim in MMD govt. Sata is not ruling. RB grew up from Zim, i wud not be suprised if he starts making generous donations to his relatives. Sata is important to zed politics 4 checks and balances. foreigners (esp asians) celebrated more than zambian. we need a president who is loved by the pipo. in the meantime, lets not cry over spilt milk. 2011 is just 3 yrs away. you’ll see. wina azalila.

  17. Sata is the only threat to our democracy otherwise we are on the right track. RB is not perfect but thank GOD he’s a good listener and I promise you he’s a regular visitor of this blog.

  18. “We need similar ideologies. Patriotic Front (PF) President Michael Sata says political parties should only merge if they hold similar political ideologies. Mr. Sata says there is no need for political parties that do not have a similar agenda to come together. He was responding to a question on the need for the opposition parties to merge in a bid to oust the ruling MMD from government. This was during a press briefing in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, Friday. Mr. Sata questioned the credibility of the Zambian electoral system under the current legislation. He also reiterated his party’s plans to petition President Rupiah Banda’s election.” Source: w w w . z n b c . c o . z m. Why ask UPND?

  19. Crucial situation. Let’s hope we dont face the same tragedy soon. Aba ku Chipata batila “ca ona muzako, mawa cili pa iwe.”

  20. THEIR WOMEN TRADERS COME TO LUSAKA TO SELL TEA LEAVES THEN WHEN ITS DARK THEY ASK CALL BOYS IF THEY CAN ACCOMODATE THEM IN THEIR RAMSHACKELS IN CHIBOLYA SO THAT THEY CAN GET A BATH AND A HOT MEAL PROBABLY THOSE CALL BOYS HAVE NO BEDS SO I SUPPOSE THEY JST SLEEP ON THE FLOOR IMAGINE HOW MUGABE HAS DEGRADED THESE WOMEN HOW DO YOU EXPECT TO ERADICATE AIDS IN AFRICA VERY SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS

  21. I remember being shocked the first time I saw Zimbabwean women on our Lusaka streets walking around selling Mazoe drink and Zimbabwean chocolates. I was told that some of them even sleep at the bus station because they have no shelter in the evenings. It is truely sad and I feel sympathy for our sisters. Even old women have been caught up in this practice. I think it is so humiliating for them but they have no choice as they have children to feed. Even though we have our own problems, #23 please let us not forget our humanity.

  22. I note several major issues with the Zimbabwe situation. a) Civil society in Zimbabwe is very weak – firstly due to the ingrained ‘tribal’ hostilities (Ndebeles’ and Shonas’) b)Secondly because the ‘received’ colonial exploitative and dehumanising system of rule, over the years exacerbated selfish individualism c)Thirdly, the African ‘conflict resolution mechanisms’ have never quite set off the ground and are as impotent as a castrated rat d)Fourthly, the international ‘community’, more especially the UK and
USA have only ever paid lip service to conflicts where they have
calculated that if they were to intervene, they wouldn’t balance the books.

  23. # 35 looks like you have a small scope,me myself I am mwenye and i am notti satisfied or happy and you come around say that the mwenyes, are happy, u shudi be more worried more about the scrap metal dealers from down south and chinese, just my .02 cents.

  24. What a sad situation our brothers and sisters are going through. Let´s help them by not paying them the K 3000 for the chicken but a bit more. LORD JESUS COME TO THEIR AID.

  25. i am very sad for what is happening in Zimbabwe country it is bad i must confess, i pray God with it intmates mercy have petty for the country i now oneday somehow we will die face God judgement at the last day, nomatter who you are,it is awaiting everyone.
