Investor to produce biodiesel in Luapula

Share

An investor has expressed interest to venture into biodiesel production from palm oil in Luapula Province next year.

BIOMAX Company Limited is willing to invest over US $50 million (50 million United States Dollars) for the establishment of a biodiesel processing plant in Nchelenge district.

The company would set up a processing plant in the district for initial processing of crude palm oil after procurement of oil palm from local farmers.

Luapula Province Acting Permanent Secretary, Clement Siame, disclosed this to ZANIS in Mansa.

Mr Siame explanied that once processed at first stage at the plant in Nchelenge, the crude palm oil would be taken to Ndola for refining where it would be processed into biodiesel which would be distributed to a named oil marketing company.

He revealed that BIOMAX had set up a processing plant in Ndola at the total cost of US $30 (30 million United States Dollars) to refine the crude palm oil from Luapula Province into biodiesel.

He said another company, Gurock Ropes, has expressed interest in investing in the plantation of palm oil in Luapula Province.

The acting PS  said Gurock Ropes had the capacity to refine edible oils such as cooking oil and other products that came from palm oil.

Mr. Siame said that once the two companies start operating they would create employment and strengthen the local palm oil farmers in the province.

Many farmers are engaged in palm oil farming on an out grower basis.

About three years ago, government initiated the palm oil farming project in Luapula Province after it procured thousands of palm oil seedlings from Costarica to support local farmers’ out grower schemes in Nchelenge, Mwense and Kawambwa districts.

This was from a realization that Luapula Province had suitable conditions for palm oil production and that the industry could become one of the major industries to contribute to the economic well-being of the country.

  1. How about investing in alternative sources of energy like the abundant hydrogen? Bio fuels are a travesty the americans grow grain to create fuel instead of feeding the poor. Diesel damages the environment and surroundings but with hydrogen the only waste products are water and oxygen

  2. Sounds like pie in the sky. The project will , no doubt ,be abandoned once the putative investor has cashed in the govt cheque. Compliments of the season.

  3. I can smell a stinking fish, Palm oil can be produced all over West Africa,Ghana,Ivory Coast. These so called investors are after something else,They have discovered what Zambian do not know immediately they get out what they want they will leave you standing with an empty bag.Zambia’s problem is we have ignorant men and women leading the nation, the blind leading the blind.

Hydrogen is very expensive and uses up more energy. The electrolysis process involved consumes a lot of energy. You’ll need a lot of power plants if you adopt hydrogen as an alternative fuel and lets not forget a lot of money.

Bio-fuels are clean and efficient and lets not forget natural. Diesel comes from crude and that is why it is a pollutant whereas bio-fuels are cleaner and cheaper alternatives to fuel.

  5. Zambians please wake up Hydrogen is too expensive, what we need is wind energy and solar period. Across Europe and the Midwest of these United States there are too many wind farms, That is they way to go for Countries like Zambia.

  6. Zambia is not poor but mismanaged and misruled. We need to Organized to bring in Real Leadership from Parliament to Plot 1 in 2011

  7. “BIOMAX Company Limited is willing to invest over US $50 million (50 million United States Dollars) for the establishment of a biodiesel processing plant in Nchelenge district.” Sounds like good money for a start.
On “Mr Siame explanied that once processed at first stage at the plant in Nchelenge, the crude palm oil would be taken to Ndola for refining where it would be processed into biodiesel which would be distributed to a named oil marketing company,” why did they put up a plant in Ndola where there is already Indeni? Is it to compete with Indeni or what?
We need to build Cities in Luapula province also so that we reduce congestion in Cities like Ndola, Lusaka, Kitwe and L/stone.

  8. 8. Father Kwanzaa, wind energy cn help but solar is too weak to be very useful for industries or even house households.

The main reason for going wind and/or solar in terms of power generation is to mitigate climate change and its attendant effects/impacts on humans.

Nuclear power generation is good too in mitigating climate change issues. So, why not create jobs for our people in terms of mines and also energy generation and supply. Foreign exchange can be obtained from exports to neighbouring countries especially South Africa which needs more energy for its industries.

  9. Zambia should stop trusting these investors (INFESTORS)…. they will soon INFEST the whole country with more poverty.,They are in Zedi only to reap, reap and reap mother Zambia’s precious resources.

I undertand Chingola mines whatever it is called now, employed fellow Indians who locals call ‘ex-prisoners’ from their country

I saw one who was in a Bank with pathetic tropicals—sandals.. :o:o:o:o:o:o:-?:-?:-?**==**==**==**==**==**==

  10. Gentleman and ladies, fellow country men and women, this is our time and this is our moment. Support the only true leadership for 2011 and that is only the U-Team with a manifesto that late Mwanawasa and alive Magande tried to use in bringing Zambia to some sane level as an economy and Nation.

Since this is our time and moment as Zambians, let us make sure we help in getting the young and energetic president Hakainde Hichilema to become President of our great Nation, Zambia.

    I would have loved to stand as Zambian presidential candidate in 2011, but I have commitments right now. I am considering doing so in 2016. I have already secured some support from non-Zambians of all forms. =;

  11. #3 and the rest can I be educated on this one , you say the waste product of hydrogen is water and oxygen? I thought water consists of 2molecules of hydrogen and 0xygen . How then can we have water and oxygen as waste products of hydrogen???????

  12. #13, Maestro, I urge you to start campaigning for your self right now…… for Zedi’s presido.. and ‘GOOD LUCK ‘to you….

  13. i’m bothered by the attitude of the zambian goverment of sittng back and letting foreigners do the investment into the development of our natutural resources.it’s always investors investors!when are we ever going to invest into our own country?look at what happened with luanshya mine – these people are hear to reap and when things get tough they go.even jesus said that a hired shepard runs away when the sheep are attacked by a wolf but the a shepard who owns the sheep will give his life for them.it’s time goverment started investing into our natural resources and empowering indeginous zambians with the financial capability to do so.this is the only way the standard of living and……

  14. …infrastructure will improve.a zambian empowered by his country will feel the need to give back to it.i’m not advocating for a zimbabwe where foreigners are chased,no.what i’m simply saying is that the goverment needs to equal the balance of the country’s wealth(or even tip it a bit in favour of zambians)between foreigners and zambians because our country has literally been ‘sold’.one might argue that hte resources aren’t there but they are, they are just not chanelled in the right direction.for all the negatives of the unip goverment,at least they knew the basic fact that only a goverment with money can help it’s people and the only way to have money is to invest in the country’s….

  17. …resources.the mmd goverment however seems to have folded thier hands and left this to the private sector.thier source of income instead has become haulrondous taxing most of which affects the avarage zambian and loans from the imf and world bank that will come to haunt us in future.so you see it’s like a hierarchy of sucking pumps sucking on the avarage teacher, doctor ,nurse and so on and it’s up to our leaders to analyse this and start empowering themselves by investing into the country’s natural resources because they will get 100 or so times the money they invested in the long run which will consquently lead to them being able to inprove the state of the nation.pf or mmd…

  23. hi maestro i’m humbled to be personally adressed by a great blogger like you but i’m sorry i don’t understand tonga so would you mind translating your statement into english.

  24. #19 ,Maestro, Iam getting worried and concerned as to what is going on in your mind and head on this number.. please chill out and take a break… its festive season …

#26,donya donya, you are a great contributor on this blogg today– ‘BOXING DAY’ :-?:-?

  25. FUEL IS SUPPOSED TO BE K3000 PER LITRE.. OIL HAS DROPPED FROM $160 TO $40… WHEN IT WAS $160, FUEL WAS 10PIN.. OIL HAS DROPPED BY 75% AND SO SHOULD FUEL.. IT MUST BE K2500… ERB AND GOVERNMENT ARE USELESS..! ATASE!!!

  26. no 32 joseph.this is why i state that the country is not being run properly.just so you 80% of the time ba LT don’t post my comments when i say whoever is at the top is not thinking properly!

  27. #7 Hydrogen production is expensive now but in 30 to 40 years it will not. it is better to invest in the long term rather than short term. Car production were once expensive but as competition grew the prices dropped. Biofuels increase carbon emissions and require large tracts of land for biofuels. How about using the same land to produce crops to feed the masses. Our fellow zambians are starving and yet our government wants to push for farmers to grow biofuels

  28. #34. dobo banton(9TH).LLB

Hydrogen does not produce its own energy. It requires storing energy into hydrocarbons for it to work. In short hydrogen is stored energy. A car that would cost you $30,000 on diesel will cost you $100,000+ on hydrogen plus the fuel is expensive.

Hydrogen is also a polluting alternative. You cannot create hydrogen fuel on solar panels. It requires a lot of energy. A country that runs on coal power plants will require more coal power plants to make the fuel readily available. Coal pollutes more than oil. You cannot adopt hydrogen and expect it to work on Kariba and Kafue gorge. Right now there is already load shedding. Where are you going to get the power [tbc

  29. cont from #36]

plants to perform the electrolysis process involved in hydrogen fuel???

Bio-fuels does pollute yes but the pollution from bio-fuels is lower in comparison with crude. Also bio-fuels are a cheaper solution. And much more affordable. Bio-fuels will also provide jobs.

Zambia has got more than enough land to grow food and bio-fuels.

  30. Nga ulanium ba eba,i read somewhere that the french,USA,and most recently Sweden stopped using nuclear fuels. Why is it that we so called developing(4th world) countries are always the tail, why cant we be the head? All we need to do is move with the times,my butt.Bio-fuels caused these developed nations who are now using uranium,to Genetically Modify there foods, commonly known as GMO’s..Some time back GMO’s were denounced in the my beloved Zambia, but due to some unscrupulous henchmen GMO’s are creeping back slowly as a result of dodgy investor

  31. Ho Ho Ho!

Hope you all had a good christmas.

Sony Ericsson Phiri, Baby C, Rashid, Anonymous-UK and all the regulars, Father Christmas is back.

    Thank you for your messages.

  32. $50million is not enough for such a project. I am surprised no Zambian has noticed this. If these guys are going to start from zero, sorry guys ububufi!

    Ho Ho Ho!

  33. the project looks fine on its surface. But have they looked into the impacts on food production, damage to soil productivity, pressure on agricultural land etc. So lets weigh these impacts agaist the benefits this project will bring. Job creation, how many people will be employed? how is it going to reduce the price of fuel in Zmbaia? lastly how is it going to add value to our national economic development? All these questions have to be answered before launching the project.

Otherwise it will be like chasing after the wind.

  34. No 10 you’re such a negative contributor.Been away from the blog for a while hoping tribal poeple like you will be extinct but alas…Get a life!

  35. #1, when Kaunda said “diesel from grass” and everybody laughed him out of State House, he was fifty years ahead of all Zambians.
#4, Nuclear energy is for electricity generation and it has problems of radioactive waste disposal biodiesels are for automobiles mostly.
#6, Blind leading blind: I think you are the blind because even though I am Zambia I am not blind (check my name)
#10, The plant will be in Ndola because that is where the market is. When Luapula towns have grown and they will, investors will be able to set up plants there. Invesment is risk taking
#17, If you want the Govt to invest directly in business, then start agitating for parastals and I will support you.

  36. #10 MS Luapula and other provinces if Kaunda had not allowed people even those without jobs to flock to town and build shanties. This part of our history should not be left out as one the reasons we facing all these problems

  37. The first cog in the wheel of the working nation is a working government. How does it collect its taxes, and how are they used? How efficiently do her systems work, from security to issuance of vital documents? No matter how much we dislike the government, we cannot do without it; It is the starting point in a working nation.

  38. 29. donya donya, noted. I thought you could understand Tonga in looking at your posting “…,tonga or bemba,i love my country and i wish for a day when poverty levels will be down to less than 10,when we’ll have a respectable no of universities not just ONE,and when our flag will be represented as a reality in the lives of it’s people not just as piece of cloth they wave during football games, but as reflection of thier life – strong and free” on number 25. Since, I dont know Bemba properly, I thought Tonga will be great as it is my mother tongue which I Know well.

Anyhow, do not worry much for it is gone now – it has past. I may try to interpret it for you later if I get the strength.

  39. I would expect anyone looking for alternative fuel by exploring the already tested sugarcane by product, ethanol? AND DIRECT these investors to NAKAMBALA.
I just hope these so called investors are not trying to bring the eastern congo mineral war to zambia.

  40. wind power can help but hills so far, You mention solar , the sun is free and was created for non porfit whims by the people for who it is supposed to benifit, Without going to jargon lets be clear that it is up to man and man alone. woman can sustantiate but with limited libido, only altenetive energy will organisimate the free flow of motherwood and the pecking order shall not be shaken.

  41. Ya Siame, NOT SO FAST!! We truly need in alternative fuels, but not so fast!! Like the problematic premaure MMD failed privatization of Zambia, I can guarantee Zambia reaping similar failed results.
Let us wait and see from other countries, where this thing is going. Do not be blinded, $50 million is nothing to invest in such a huge venture. What kind of a PS is Siame not to be ashamed of even mentioning $50 million, as if its good money!

  42. I feel you guys and you all seem to be well informed about energy. There is a lot the country can learn and benefit from serious bloggers like you. Congratulations and compliments of the season to you all!

  43. ANNOUNCE AFTER YOU HAVE STARTED PRODUCING THE GOODS OR SERVICE AND YOU ARE EMPLOYING ZAMBIANS. SAYING YOU WILL DO THIS AND THAT IN WHICH PLACE WILL NOT FEED THE MASSES. AFTER ALL THE GRZ GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO RIP ZAMBIA.

  44. i use Biodiesel on my car. i think everyone should use biodiesel so that each one can at least contribute to the environment.
