An investor has expressed interest to venture into biodiesel production from palm oil in Luapula Province next year.
BIOMAX Company Limited is willing to invest over US $50 million (50 million United States Dollars) for the establishment of a biodiesel processing plant in Nchelenge district.
The company would set up a processing plant in the district for initial processing of crude palm oil after procurement of oil palm from local farmers.
Luapula Province Acting Permanent Secretary, Clement Siame, disclosed this to ZANIS in Mansa.
Mr Siame explanied that once processed at first stage at the plant in Nchelenge, the crude palm oil would be taken to Ndola for refining where it would be processed into biodiesel which would be distributed to a named oil marketing company.
He revealed that BIOMAX had set up a processing plant in Ndola at the total cost of US $30 (30 million United States Dollars) to refine the crude palm oil from Luapula Province into biodiesel.
He said another company, Gurock Ropes, has expressed interest in investing in the plantation of palm oil in Luapula Province.
The acting PS Â said Gurock Ropes had the capacity to refine edible oils such as cooking oil and other products that came from palm oil.
Mr. Siame said that once the two companies start operating they would create employment and strengthen the local palm oil farmers in the province.
Many farmers are engaged in palm oil farming on an out grower basis.
About three years ago, government initiated the palm oil farming project in Luapula Province after it procured thousands of palm oil seedlings from Costarica to support local farmers’ out grower schemes in Nchelenge, Mwense and Kawambwa districts.
This was from a realization that Luapula Province had suitable conditions for palm oil production and that the industry could become one of the major industries to contribute to the economic well-being of the country.

How about investing in alternative sources of energy like the abundant hydrogen? Bio fuels are a travesty the americans grow grain to create fuel instead of feeding the poor. Diesel damages the environment and surroundings but with hydrogen the only waste products are water and oxygen

Hydrogen is very expensive and uses up more energy. The electrolysis process involved consumes a lot of energy. You’ll need a lot of power plants if you adopt hydrogen as an alternative fuel and lets not forget a lot of money.
Bio-fuels are clean and efficient and lets not forget natural. Diesel comes from crude and that is why it is a pollutant whereas bio-fuels are cleaner and cheaper alternatives to fuel.
Zambians please wake up Hydrogen is too expensive, what we need is wind energy and solar period. Across Europe and the Midwest of these United States there are too many wind farms, That is they way to go for Countries like Zambia.
Zambia is not poor but mismanaged and misruled. We need to Organized to bring in Real Leadership from Parliament to Plot 1 in 2011

Is it to compete with Indeni or what?
We need to build Cities in Luapula province also so that we reduce congestion in Cities like Ndola, Lusaka, Kitwe and L/stone.
8. Father Kwanzaa, wind energy cn help but solar is too weak to be very useful for industries or even house households.
The main reason for going wind and/or solar in terms of power generation is to mitigate climate change and its attendant effects/impacts on humans.
Nuclear power generation is good too in mitigating climate change issues. So, why not create jobs for our people in terms of mines and also energy generation and supply. Foreign exchange can be obtained from exports to neighbouring countries especially South Africa which needs more energy for its industries.
Zambia should stop trusting these investors (INFESTORS)…. they will soon INFEST the whole country with more poverty.,They are in Zedi only to reap, reap and reap mother Zambia’s precious resources.

#7 Hydrogen production is expensive now but in 30 to 40 years it will not. it is better to invest in the long term rather than short term. Car production were once expensive but as competition grew the prices dropped. Biofuels increase carbon emissions and require large tracts of land for biofuels. How about using the same land to produce crops to feed the masses. Our fellow zambians are starving and yet our government wants to push for farmers to grow biofuels

Hydrogen does not produce its own energy. It requires storing energy into hydrocarbons for it to work. In short hydrogen is stored energy. A car that would cost you $30,000 on diesel will cost you $100,000+ on hydrogen plus the fuel is expensive.
Hydrogen is also a polluting alternative. You cannot create hydrogen fuel on solar panels. It requires a lot of energy. A country that runs on coal power plants will require more coal power plants to make the fuel readily available. Coal pollutes more than oil. You cannot adopt hydrogen and expect it to work on Kariba and Kafue gorge. Right now there is already load shedding. Where are you going to get the power [tbc

Bio-fuels does pollute yes but the pollution from bio-fuels is lower in comparison with crude. Also bio-fuels are a cheaper solution. And much more affordable. Bio-fuels will also provide jobs.
Zambia has got more than enough land to grow food and bio-fuels.

the project looks fine on its surface. But have they looked into the impacts on food production, damage to soil productivity, pressure on agricultural land etc. So lets weigh these impacts agaist the benefits this project will bring. Job creation, how many people will be employed? how is it going to reduce the price of fuel in Zmbaia? lastly how is it going to add value to our national economic development? All these questions have to be answered before launching the project.
Otherwise it will be like chasing after the wind.
