Zambia: Street vending contributes to cholera- Mangani

Lusaka province minister Lameck Mangani (in a suit) is flanked by local government officials and marketeers inspecting the new Soweto market in Lusaka
Government has observed that street vending and unsanitary conditions at public places were some of the major contributing factors to the out break of cholera in the country.
Lusaka Province Minister, Lameck Mangani, said the general public should be mindful of the manner they dispose off refuse in order to avoid and control diarrheal diseases.
Mr. Mangani said this yesterday when a 33 member committee of the Soweto Market Development committee paid a courtesy call on him to urge government to open the market soon.
He has meanwhile, pledged government’s commitment to improving the social sector aimed at uplifting the welfare of Zambians by encouraging them to participate in income generating activities.
He said government would soon work on the access road leading to the new market and establish a bus station in line with Bus Station and Market Act.

Lusaka province minister Lameck Mangani is mobbed by marketeers at the newly erected Soweto market when he went to inspect the facility
Mr. Mangani said government was ready to open the market to the public.
He reiterated that government would ensure that transparency prevails in the allocation of trading spaces especially to those who had their stalls razed down to pave way for the construction of the market.
Earlier, Soweto Market Development Committee Chairperson, Albert Phiri appealed to the government to expedite the commissioning of the market to curb street vending in town.
Mr. Phiri told the minister that his committee had also identified two sites in Lusaka which have about 5,000 trading spaces, adding that one of them has all the necessary social amenities for use by the marketeers.
Yesterday, Mr. Mangani toured the new Soweto market to ensure that everything was in place before President Rupiah Banda commissions it.

as much as it can be true abt the general public throwing stuff anyhow, but most of the trash is caused by the street vendors..government shld jst build more modern markets and ensure there is enuf space,to allocate the stores to marketeers without corruption, unlike the situation of where by the build a market with 2000 stores and they recieve 10000 applications for the market stores..in my opinion it means 8000 people will hav to sale on the streets,so hw can the city be clean..

Marketeers/vendors should learn to clean their sorroundings instead of waiting for the councils. I remember when I was at UNZA, we went to clean the City one Saturday morning. It was great. The late Bweendo Mulengela was the Editor in Chief of the Times of Zambia then. The following day front page headline was ‘UNZA’s time of glory’. We need such initiatives instead of waiting for GOVT to do everything/something for us…..

News Flash, this is not the first time Zambia has been hit by this embarrassing outbreak. If Govt. had the intension of preventing such incidents, appropriate measures could have been adopted a while back. There is a tendency of waiting for a problem to occur then politicise the solution. Prevention is better than the bloody cure. Implement strategic preventative measures and stop embarrassing yourselves by trying to look like you doing something constructive about it!!

“Government has observed that street vending and unsanitary conditions at public places were some of the major contributing factors to the out break of cholera in the country.”
Now that the MMD GRZ has observed this information, what is it doing to make sure that things are different.
My advice to you MMD GRZ is that please create an environment where locals, Citizens, can become enterpreneur or businessmen so that they can have proper jobs for themselves and also provide jobs to other locals. Depending on foreign investment alone will not help us. People need good jobs to stop street vending. Also, provide reasonable sanitation in public places.

I was just voicing my opinion. We are now in the millenium. The government must stop talking and act.All they do is talk and talk, but no action.
Its time to act . Clean the streets, what about the tax people pay, where has it gone. Telo me now.

The street vendors need to feed their families, so lets not blame them, however they must atleast keep their work stations or lets say work places clean. This also applies to the food hygiene.

Ok. Besides the dirty all you have vomited here, I guess this idea of passing ‘greetings’ is rubbish in itself especially when I sense that most of you chaps do not see each other face to face. When you have run out of stuff to write go and swallow a glass of water it will cool your pressure to be ‘courteous’ or rather to be that inviting!
