Government has started giving car loans to teachers in Mazabuka district in Southern Province.
District Education Board Secretary (DEBS), Mwangelwa Akapelwa who disclosed this
when he addressed hundreds of teachers during the commemoration of the World
Teachers’ Day, however regretted that none of the teachers has applied for the car
loan.
Mr Akapelwa said government, through the ministry of education has also introduced a
retention scheme for headteachers serving in rural areas.
He said all the incentives are meant to motive teachers.
And District Commissioner, Misheck Chiinda told the teachers that government has
embarked on the rehabilitation of run down infrastructure to ensure teachers worked
in conducive environments.
Mr Chiinda who said this in a speech read for him by Mazabuka Municipal Council
Chief Community Development Officer, Mubita Mulonda, also challenged teachers to go
for voluntary counselling and testing and access free anti-retroviral drugs
available in all government health institutions.
Several teachers received awards for their hard work.
How do give car loan to somebody who has no house. First thing first sirs… Accomodation is prime.
I strongly agree. Acquiring a car is only as empowering as it allows you to move from area of personal economic activity to another. It is only sustainable to the extent that our teachers have the means to look after their families and themselves adequately. How do they pay for insurance, escalating cost of fuel (which government is happily watching spiral out of our reach), tyres and other service parts. Yes, I think a house loan is much better!
The salary cannot even buy one tyre. Shame Mr Akapelwa. I wonder whether he even owns a personal one
Gents, get serious. Give teachers plots and house loans with reasonable interest so they build and have shelter. Car adds no value to ones life apart from paying for fuel whose price is escalating however not in all the sub region but only Zambia where it costs close to $2 a litre while in the neighbouring countries it costs just about a dollar. I agree with you gents contributing HOUSE FIRST!
This mare politiking and govt has failled to retain many proffessionals. Brain drain is due to govt negligence.Car loans? How much is the loan scheme? From which funds will GRZ get the moeny from? How is a teachers salary? I graduated as teacher from Charles T. College and never was i employed for two years until i thought that there was nothing for me and my future. Better give people higher income so that they decide how to spend their money on ther own.
TEACHER IN ZAMBIA
Well it’s not a bad idea but if wages can be increased the better. I’m a zambian living in the UK where people regard owning a car as just like a pair of shoes. Alot of people do drive because the majority can afford. Even here some can’t afford and opt cycling. If you came to UK the bicycles one would see would think one is in katete or Petauke. However, going by the current salaries of teachers in zambia It would be ideal to increase the wages first. It’s not a bad idea because not all teachers are poor anyway it all depends on how someone is financially displined. Choose building a house or car. Some teachers already own good house. Get those loans even here in UK people live on car loans, mortages just to mention but afew.
Interesting developments, teachers and nurses, etc., are driving in Zambia. Gap between folks in diaspora and those at home is seriously narrowing. At the end of the day the loans are voluntary. Those who feel they can afford the interest payments should go ahead and get the loans.
interesting, driving while sleeping in classes and wards.shelter is the basic need for every human being, houses first then we can get car loans
