Health workers in Serenje refuse to cross river for fear of their lives

Share

Health workers in Mpelembe area of Serenje are refusing to cross Luombwa river to provide health services to people of Kamaka and Reuben Muntanga areas in Chitambo constituency.

This came to light when villagers at Reuben Muntanga complained that they have had
no universal child immunization (UCI) programmes for some time now where under five
children and pregnant mothers are checked.

Speaking in an interview with ZANIS, concerned resident in the area Boniface Kalunga
said health workers fear to cross the river on canoes and would rather mothers and
their children cross to meet them on the other side.

Mr. Kalunga appealed to government to intervene and help the people in the area
access health services easily by building a bridge across the river.

Mr Kaluga said the officers were complaining that they could not risk crossing on
canoes or banana boats because there was no compensation in case of an accident.

On the other hand, the villagers were also saying it would be better for one person
to cross than risking a large number of children and women.

And Serenje district Director of health services, Edgar Mufaya said the problem
required the attention of all stakeholders to resolve.

  1. Upanfiwe, eubulwa nechibi. I dont mean to be rude. Can the poor villagers start crossing the river if they love health and especially those young one who have not been to underfive for sometime. Shunning health routine check ups as well as crossing that river is equally risky. Otherwise LPM,must release that helicopter to ferrying the health workers to carryout their duties on the other side as everyone waits for the bridge. No one deserves to die. And no one should be sacrificed

  2. Serenje District is the most underdeveloped in Central Province in all areas such as Telecoms (analogue)still in use.During rain season it is impossible to contact anyone, the district is completely cut off to the rest of the Nation.
Roads are poorly mantained by unqualified the so called contractors, how come the roads have to be worked on evry year after rain season? There is no link road with the people in the Luano valley.Nga ku shitisha impasa benda mpanshi inshiku shitatu ukya ku Serenje.

  3. The airdromes at Ndabala and Serenje Boma hane been neglected-trees and grass have overgrown soon to disappear and shanties will emerge.
The Tazara waiting room stinks-toilets blocked.Water was a major problem-rusty appearance only depended on botled water.Lukanga Water do your best.
The walfare center is now a storage for FRA so no social actvities for the youth, instead of making this place a meeting place for youth by geting them involvedin competive games such table-tennis,or indoor games.
