Some Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) youths in Mpulungu have pledged to support the party National Secretary Dr. Katele Kalumba for the party presidency.
The youths who spoke on condition of anonymity said Dr. Kalumba is a capable and selfless leader.
They further said Dr. Kalumba, who is also Chiengi Member of Parliament, will be very easy to sell both in the party and to the general public.
They charged that Dr. Kalumba has the charisma and the energy to lead the party and the nation to economic stability, peace and prosperity.
The youths also disclosed that they will soon convene a meeting to lobby for support for Dr. Kalumba.
The youths have since called on the MMD in the area to be united as the party goes through a leadership transformation.
Yesterday, President Mwanawasa encouraged those wishing to contest for the party presidency to openly declare their candidature.

Allowing Katele to contest even for party presido will be a true reflection of politics without moral values. By the way who are these illitrate fishermen boys of mpulungu advocating for katele to stand for MMD presido? I agree with you. But I feel Chirwa is among the rotten eggs. Iam also of the opinion that he is one of the best candidates but he has to single himself out of these bunch of rotten eggs. I dont how but he has to. I say so because no one has welcomed him in MMD not even LPM. What ever decission Chirwa will make he still will have the Backup of many Zedians and I feel the time for him to make a decission is now.

I personally don`t know more about Prof Chirwa apart from what is written in the papers.I`ve strongly been advocating a NEW POLITICAL DISPENSATION and I think Prof CHIRWA would fit the bill of offering something fresh and new.I have doubts of him fulfilling such an ambition within a corrupt party like MMD.
The only direction the country can go is upwards because we`re currently at the very bottom.He shouldn`t be scared of stepping out of MMD.

I am not MMD, but I feel obliged to speak out on this important matter especially that in African circles the ruling party always believes that they have to win the general elections under any circumstances (through rigging). For this reason, I want to have persons of integrity in all parties vying for presidency. Mr Katele’s CV is dented so much that given that position, he will regroup all those he worked with to finish off Zambia’s reserves denying this country the dvelopment it needs.

Professor Chirwa did the right thing to aspire for the MMD presidency because that was the only party that will soon have a vacancy. The other parties dont have not even in the near future.MMD has rejected him, well and good, probably God doesnt want a clean man among the dirty. The Man is now busy with his work and I hope come next year when he retires, we see a birth of a new party. We need a good alternative to Mwanawasa’s 3rd term through Maureen. Most small parties will join this party.

Some people think that Chirwa is presidential material simply because he is a professor. Professor is an academic title achieved through publications of research activities in a given area. What is Chirwa’s area of specialisation? He is not the answer. The first MMD cabinet was full of educated people but most of them turned out to be wolves in sheep skins. Beware of people who try to hoodwink you with their academic titles.
Dear KSK, have u ever had chance to listern to Mr Chirwa’s development agenda for Zambia? his vison and the means to achieve that vision? For many Zeds anyone who would think in those lines, regardless of his academic title would be presidential material. Besides his exposure in the developed world puts him in a better position to understand how economies are run and how economic development can be achieved. He is an engineer and that is another advantage to enable enhancing infrastructural dev.
KSK Iam not through yet, look KK helped us achieve national unity. FTJ worked of liberalisation and ‘decracy’, but corruption was high and most investment regulatory systems were not yet in place. LPM has tried to enhance economic growth, reduce corruption etc. What is lucking in Zambia now is infrastructural dev. You and I can invest anywhere in Zambia if we had a good railway and road network, at lease 1 university in each province, a national airline, good roads, eclectricity, telecoms etc
