Zambians being cheated like children

Share

Solwezi District Commissioner Albert Chifita has condemned the engagement of foreign contractors by Kansanshi Mine and has challenged the management to prove how they have improved the economic landscape in the province.

Mr. Chifita said in Solwezi that the economic development, the Kansanshi management were claiming, was actually inadequate even for Solwezi District alone. He said the ordinary villagers in Solwezi do not even feel the economic impact being talked about.

Mr. Chifita said the district does not need foreign contractors to come and do the cleaning service in Solwezi when Zambian Companies were there to do such jobs.

He said that his findings revealed that Kansanshi management did not advertise the tender nationally, but sent E-Mails to few selected companies without the knowledge of Zambian bidders.

The District Commissioner charged that there was no accountability and transparency as claimed by Kansanshi management, adding that the people of Zambia should not be cheated like children.

Mr. Chifita said the former Zambian contractors were paying their employees between K1.2 million to K2 million but the new foreign investors are paying the same workers K400,000 net.

He said when Zambian contractors are engaged there is what he called spillover effects in the economy of Solwezi because they purchase local products from local suppliers and the workers are adequately paid and spend the money locally.

Mr. Chifita observed that the foreign investors would be purchasing products from South Africa and Ghana depriving the local suppliers and they have their own offices in these countries and not in Solwezi.

  1. Ba Chifita Iam one hundred percent behind you! Zambians cant fail to offer cleaning and catering services. These are manpower intensive industries that our unemployed would welcome with both hands. These contracts must be terminated immediately and given to Zambians. If we cant run such basic industry how can people agree when we say we can run Hotels, Mines, etc. Are we Zambians saying we must hand all our businesses to foreigner?

  2. Mr.Chifita the problem in Solwezi is not an isolated case, the whole system in Zambia is broken, We need to organize local councils across the Country needs to come up with laws which will regulate businesses in their Cities to address issues like employement taxes and development.

  3. THAT IS THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP WE NEED? ADVOCATING FOR THE INTEREST OF THE POOR! WHY SHOULD FORIEGNERS BE THE ONES TO BENEFIT FROM THE COPPER. THE PEOPLE OF SOLWEZI SHOULD PROTEST AGANIST SUCH ACTS BY ALL MEANS. THE HOUR OF AWAKENING IS HERE? LET THE LOCALS BENEFIT FROM OUR RESOURCES. GO MR CHIFITA ….THAT IS THE KIND OF LEADERSHIP WE NEED.

  4. ..and the investors take advantage of the new found supremacy! A coupla weeks ago a fellow zedian run after my neighbour a white guy who rented a flat at the same complex as i did, and hurriedly helped him with his shopping bags and greeted him with a big smile WELCOME BWANA! Since i was also on vactaion there, the guy only smiled at me when i gave him food or paid him for doing my laundry, Zedians prefer to respect whites than one of their own! Later i found out i paid him more than the muzungu

  5. in short, if they are cheated like children by a foreign investors its OKEY, they can sleep it over, and keep smiling always too scared to stand up and fight, since it was A Bwana who cheated, or treated them unfairly, but Wewee let a fellow zedian make that mistake … kuti mwa umfwa ati ka chite ka chitile ifii, neefyoo!

  6. Mr.Chifita is a real chifita.A real Zambian.I think zedians shud work up.I did not know a man like him could stand up and say how much he feels about his pipo, abt the country and about what comes in.Solwezi? You are lucky.Hold the guy with two firm hands

  7. Bamwisa nabapwa umwenso mulandu wa government iyamulekelesha wabantu bakwe. I want the government to respond to this issue. Chifita is a really Zambian who needs our support. If bawmisa are not abiding by the governing laws and they are not serving the interest of Zambia, why keep them? Come no guys, lets mount on preasure

  8. Mr Albert Chifita stop bullshiting… You are condemning these investors because you have failed to secure yourself a contract at Kansanshi…

  9. #11 You should be the one bullshiting leave Mr Chifita alone he’s defending the interests of Zambians. From the look of things you should be one of these bogus investors

  10. #11 You out of line.We can’t allow this to continue in our Country. We have been taken for a ride long enough by some of these called ‘Investor’.

  11. #7 & 8 How true! It is on this very blog that I raised this issue and Zambians wrote so many comments about how it is impossible for a Zambian to provide the cleaning and restaurant services. They said the new mine owners need high standards but so what? A Zambian can provide high standards too. But the mentality of ‘muzungu niye ocenjela not us’ is very much with Zambians. This means If you give your speech to a muzungu to deliver it for you Zambians will pay attention

  12. #11 if you are a zambian the investors you’re siding sees you as a stinking nigga whether you feel elite or not, whatever small funds you have stashed up somewhere might run out one day but zed will always be there for you. Let us fight for our rights in our land and not let these racist who have yet again come to plunder our resources in the name of investing come and blind us with the few kwachas you gained from them

  13. Number 11…uli bwa…elite wamu chibuku? it takes guts for someone in government to condemn the so called investors that oiled some hands in government to get the contract?

  14. Guys our country only knows one way of operating government – CORRUPTION – we like to blame other countries for mistake we ourselves make. We like to deal in corrupt fasion and them cry out loud the following day.Copper is not the ony mineral in Zambia, there are others, why are they still waiting to be dug? Because we want outsiders to come and show us where to dig, and let them show us how to polish them too.Copper was lying dormant for years the Chinese had to come and remind us we can sell.

  15. we have all seen it before, Senegalese Malians and few other west africans invaded Zed and plundered all they could from our precious stones like emeralds, aquamarine, among others. Zedians were used as “Ba Kajamu” cheap laborers at the illegal mines on the C/B and other mineral rich areas, many women left their husbands and married the foreigners who could afford to feed and dress them decently, many years passed till something was done and the Senesnes deported back.

  16. Ban workers eating nshima for launch, with the sun blazing they can’t work after eating nshima. Production reduced to 1/2 after launch.
14.30 hrs: Where is babwalya ? You find babwalya doozing under the mango tree after eating a solid nshima.

  17. Have you all foregotten how all the people suffered, and had no work when the nzungu were chased out years ago.It is only getting better now that investment is returning.Stop haggeling like women, and be happy that Zambia is going foreward
