UPND in donation scam

Share

Chief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka has uncovered a scam in which the opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) is allegedly soliciting for donations for flood victims using the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC).

The Chief told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that he is aware that the donations that were made by UPND President, Hakainde Hichilema to flood victims in Mazabuka were sourced from some named commercial farmers.

Chief Mwanachingwala said it is wrong for the opposition party to privately ask for aid using government structures without the knowledge of the local leadership.

He challenged Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament, Garry Nkombo, to account for the K10 million donation made by a Charles Cox, a commercial farmer in the area.

But Mr Nkombo dismissed the allegations as total lies.

Mr Nkombo told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that the donations made by Mr Hichilema did not come from the commercial farmers but from his (HAKAINDE) personal account.

He said the UPND president issued a cheque to PRAV Wholesalers who supplied mealie meal, cooking oil and other donations given to the flood victims in Magoye and Mazabuka constituencies before the controversial cheque was issued by Cox.

And Mr Nkombo says the K10 million donated by Mr Cox for flood victims will only be accessed once the cheque is cleared by the bank.

He explained that the supplier of the items earmarked for donations has indicated that he will only release the items once the cheque had been clearede by the bank.

Mr Nkombo also said there are no calls for suspicion because District Commissioner, Misheck Chiinda, is fully aware of the K10 million.

”I showed the District Commissioner the cheque last Sunday, so he should not be peddling lies about the donation. Why does he want to discredit my name when he is fully aware,” asked Mr Nkombo.

District commissioner, Misheck Chiinda however dismissed claims by Mr Nkombo saying he has never been informed about the donation from Mr Cox.

Mr Chiinda advised all organisations intending to assist flood victims to make their donations through the District Disaster Management Committee to which he is a chairman.

” I didn’t see the cheque. All I saw were the receipts he was flashing,” said Chiinda

Meanwhile, UPND has with immediate effect banned its members including Member of Parliament (MPs) from attacking the church mother bodies for refusing to participate to the National Constitutional Conference (NCC).

The ban by the opposition party’ s National Management Committee (NMC) follows media reports by Sinazongwe Member of Parliament (MP) Raphael Muyanda and his Mbabala counterpart, Emmanuel Hachipuka who issued anti-catholic church remarks.

Party Spokesperson, Charles Kakoma, said the remarks by the two MPs did not represent the party’s position regarding the church but maintained that the Church has always been an all whether friend in national development.

Mr. Kakoma said this in a press statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

He said the party distanced from the attacks, innuendos and outbursts by Mr. Muyanda and Mr. Hachipuka on the Catholic Church or any other religious organization.

He said it is wrong for any UPND member to antagonize the church or any other faith based organization and their leaders because of their stand on the constitution making process or other political matters.

He said freedom of speech did not legally include inciting religious hatred either inside or outside parliament.

He warned that the party would not hesitate to publicly disown any member who continued to go against the party position.

The party Spokesperson has since urged its members to respect the decision of all those that have opted to stay away from participating to the NCC and those who have gone to participate in the NCC.

“The UPND wishes to distance itself from the attacks, innuendos and outbursts by the two MPs; Mr. Muyanda and Mr. Hachipuka on the stand by Catholic Church or any other religious organization. It is wrong for any of our members to antagonize the church and their leaders because of their stand on the constitution making process or any other political issue” he said.

As UPND we won’t hesitate to publicly disown such a member or person who goes against the party’s position,” Mr. Kakoma said.

  1. What is really wrong with such a gesture coming from the UPND to the affected flood victims at their worst time of need. Gov refused to acknowledge the gravity of the problem in the first instance. Gov is not the only one that must be seen to be doing the right thing, we all when need arises come to the rescue of those who merit it the most. MMCI get stuff from other sources and that is seen ok. Double standards Chief Mwanachingwala sir.

  2. Just a matter of short sight. It does not matters how UPND collect funds, so long they are using it to help the people in need.

  3. Rightly sais #2, this is the same nation crying of floods, poverty, etc.But talking just continues, when are people going to roll sleeves and say , lets work.

  4. Its important that the truth is known. There are some traditional leaders inthe district who like attacking everyone and think only them are right . We know them and its time they are put in their rightful position

  5. Chief Mwanachingwala is behaving like an MMD cadre. Surely what is wrong for any political party to fundraise for a relief programme intended for a disaster hit area like Southern Province. It is unfortunate that the chief would like to see ‘his subjects’ rather die. In times such as this one it is a welcome idea to hear of the initiative by UPND. If I may ask for is it that the same chief done to help the flood victimes? Most likely nothing.

  6. With regard to the unwallanted attack attributed to some UPND MPs on the church (Catholic) for not participating in the deliberations is unfortunate. Although I have had no opportunity to be part to the NCC, I could not agree to be purely on my own principles. The process to me has been clouded with a lot of suspicion. I am yet to see what comes out of the NCC in its form.

  7. This chief Mwanachingwala is partisan. He wants to win sympathy from MMD for personal gain while the flood victims are languishing. Wake up Chief and take care of your suffering subjects instead of yapping on trivial issues

  8. Our chiefs have now become political cadres, If HH can influence people to donate through UPND, what wrong is that??????????
Chiefs are making us sick. why can’t these SMALL chiefs behave like Chief Chitimukulu of the Bemba or the LItunga?
If companies trust HH, why can’t HH use his influence in this matter? some people can only contribute through a person/body they love and trust. certainly we have lost trust in small chiefs like Mwanachingwala.

  9. What makes me sick is that these stupid small thiefs do not complain if it is Mwanawasa’s wife who recieves donation. Thief Mwanachingwala of Mazabuka is an

  10. Shut up senseless Mwanachingwala. What did you yourself give to the flood victims? It is unfortunate that our Zambian chiefs have turned into ruling party owned prapagander machinery. What is wrong for someone solisting money in the name of the government to help people in need? Did HH use that money for his own purpose? The government does not belong to one party or one individual. These chiefs are a disgrace and they have lost their minds. These are very bad leaders who want to divide Zambia.

  11. Mwanachingwala is cheap fool. no wonder tonga chiefs are not respected at all. can please someone advise the poor chief to shut his smelly mouth?

  12. Who are Meyanda and Hachipuka? It is unfortunate that Zambian politics are full of bootliking and shushuism. If the Church mother bodies dicide to stay away from the Mwanawasa manipulative constitutional review process, they are just expressing democracy. Democarcy it not about uniformoty but freedom do do what you deem relevant.Zambia has alot of outdated politicians who use cheap pagatoly systeem of democracy.Dont force people to do what you want but you can only conviece people to follow you.

  13. To Hachipuka and Muyanda,In the 21st Century, the world of diversities only a myopic minded person can expect people to do uniformity. As everyone is intiled to his/her opinion, people must be ready to be criticised and oposed. Dont think this is a generation were people will follow things bindly. Gone are the days when one word ruled the nation. Hachipuka and Muyanda come out of your old methodology of bootliking to the autholities. Shut up your mounth and go for psychatlic attation. Think BIG

  14. Damn!!! this chiefs, does it mean that MMD has bought all the chiefs in Zed, yesterday its was that illiterate chief Kanongesha campaign for Chuchu’s wife and today its this good for nothing chief Mwanachingwala condenming the opposition for doing justice to the poor of the poorest. SHAMU SHAMULA ON U TWO CHIEFS.

  15. So, how long does it take to clear a cheque in Zambia? Please remind me, I may have forgotten. Probably my question should be on when the cheque was issued. Wait a miunte, I am I asking the right questions or should I just condemn Mwanachingwala because it is UPND?

  16. #19 What is your problem mr chandfkaunda? say what you want to say. Anyway what is that got to do with feeding the poverty sicken pipo? Wether the chq was clear or not what is important is the pipo did not go hungery that date. No politics were food is concern.

  17. Sinazongwe Member of Parliament (MP) Raphael Muyanda and his Mbabala counterpart, Emmanuel Hachipuka issued anti-catholic church remarks. That the catholic church involvement in politics can cause war. How can refusing to be bribed cause war. What about NGOCC or J.witnesses; are they also warmongers? Is Hachipuka proposing some special law targeting/persecute Catholics?

  18. Between the the two following conditions:The president of a UPND consequently Zambia (if wins elections) must always of a particular tribe and peacefully shunning the NCC. .Which has the greatest potential for civil war/strife. If someone knows EH please ask him to reflect on this.If this is the leadership that is left in UPND then the party is totally finished.

  19. Chiefs should simply not be involved in partizan politics. Combine politics with illiteracy and you have political myopia.

  20. #20, I said alot. It is not the abundance of words but the message in the words. Read the main article and analyse my posting in #19 and you will get what I said.

  21. The guys called chiefs never cease to amaze me….. could someone tell me what role they play in our society..i really don’t think they are relevant going by senselessness of their utterences. Mwanachingwala ‘Hon’. Chief keep quiet if you have nothing to offer to Zambia….we don’t need MMD cadres masquerading as chiefs..

  22. I do not trust Chief Mwanachingwala, he is a staunch MMD cadre. Let him stay out of politics and direct his efforts towards helping his subjects out for the “flood disasters”. Does he realise that he would not be Chief without his subjects? Has he ever complained when the MMD does such things. He is belittling himself, maybe he is not “Chief material”

  23. Hachipuka and Muyanda have the right to attack the Catholic organisation because as a powerfull institution in the world, they have been a let down especially when it comes to champion democracy. The Govt. of the people has the right to check such institutions in regards to what they stand for in society. Their influence should not be over looked but consistently checked. Remember Rwanda and how many Catholic Priest are implicated in that mess? Catholic and Mwanachingwala PLC are same. ViVa MPs!

  24. WHAT KIND OF CHIEFS ARE THESE WHEN I WAS BORN CHIEFS WERE WISE AND DOING PEOPLE GOOD NOT CADRES FOR WHO CAN GIVE BUTTER
