  1. This is what we need. Investment in education for a better Zambia. Im really happy with this new development. Well done MMD

  2. way to go….be more impressed if they had to built a university in each province…”wealthy zed from education will arise”!

  3. Iam surprised with my fellow country men and women. The coming up of Mulungushi University calls for support from all walks of live. I see only two comments were on Mulungushi University. If it was another subkject matter of trivial the list of comments and insults would have ben an arm lenght. shame

  4. #3 Efyalinatata, not commenting on this matter does not mean trivializing the matter. In any case, this country requires more opportunities at tertially level in light of high school fallouts. Curricula for existing colleges require revisiting to allow for more skill training. Opening the second university is commendable but more need to be done for the increasing population.

  5. Why not improve funding to UNZA and CBU instead of wasting resources on Mulungushi university? I am certain that management of this new institution is just composed of job-seekers with nothing of value and quality to offer to Zambia.

  6. Congrats, we now have three (03) universities after 40 years of self-existence. The matter of funding and research are critical. let us wait and see

  7. if all the bursary grants that educated so many zambians, some of whom have left the country, at cbu and unza in the past were loans, after 44 years of independence we would have had at least 5-10 universities by now.

  8. We need to build UNIVERSITIES and not converting. Remember CBU was also converted. If you have two malnourished children can you think of having anather one. UNZA and CBU financially malnourished and as such I dont subscribe to the idea of having another Univeristy for the sake of increasing the number.

This is not development but simply stagnation because of having myopic leaders. From independence Zambia has never built any university or college. SHAMMMMMMMMMMEE!!!!!!!

  9. A step in the right direction..Now we need Universities in Mongu, Mansa, Solwezi, Kasama, Chipata, Livingstone and Ndola.. 11 million people with 3 universities with a total enrollment of less than 5000 students is the reason we have cadres running the country

  10. #s 2 and 10. I am with you on this one: Zambia needs atleast one university in each province. This will easy the strain that CBU and UNZA have at the moment.

Overcrowding at the above-mentioned universities has been a serious problem. This has greatly compromised the learning process at the said univ. leading to the so-called half-baked graduates.

Something that is important to look into is how we can make companies, both private and public, partner with our higher learning institutions so that infrastructure in these univ. can be maintained and brought to a decent level. The companies must be asked to also do job-fares at the universities and probably do recruiting also.

  11. Only One Zambia having more universities will envitably make the others want to compete with it if its standards are good thus them working harder to ensure that there graduates leave better qualified hence a more knowledgible work force in our country. Nad if this trend continues we will not have everyone fying off abroad to get there eduaction from there which in turn leave more money in the country. Competion is always good my friend. Hepls to keep people on their toes an dwork harder. UNZA and CBU will be forced to put up there socks because if they do not do this their reputations will fall and therefore they will have fewer students. So yes let us work towards having more universities

  12. Quality versus quantity. Why not have two good quality universities with all facilities in place, and an enrollment of 15,000 each full-time, residential students and 5,000 off-residential students in each university? Flooding the country with half baked institutions is not an answer to our development needs. We need quality manpower from our educational institutions that will be responsible for good and quality infrastructure across the country. Would all citizens be happy to have illiterate graduates filling up our institutions? This is the danger we face.

  13. Gentlemen, Lets not be so caught up with the living in the diaspora, lest we forget our own resources.#9 We are not that monied to build new unversities, u know that. But u try to think very “English” here, we do not have those resources. And thanks to govt for using the little we have accomplish this cause.Well done …

  14. the first priority should have been to sort out the funding arrangements as well as the quality of education at the existing varsities. Now we potentially have 3 poorly funded universities.i would have thought an education policy for the next 20 years should have guided what courses to offer bearing in mind the needs of our economy as well as the needs of the sub-region.

  15. #14 u put that right! we need a more educated population! i think having guality graduates can be saved for later! after all, unza is around number 6000 or so, on the best universities list in the world! shame…..lets build more universities and see how it works out! “any positive change is progress”

  16. lets upgrade the quality of UNZA & CBU…attract foreign students whose fees would partially solve the funding crisis we have at present.lets not be fooled by quantity over quality.3 varsities is sufficient for Zambia as we do not have the population at present to warrant anymore.out of the 10-12 million at present how many many families can afford a proper university education that averages $15,000 per year??bursaries are a form of subsidy…can we still afford it??

  17. let each district council have 20 bursaries each year, more for bigger councils.central govt. can pay for them and the students bonded for at least 4 years to their sponsoring council.this way Nchelenge Council will have a graduate water engineer of the same quality as LUDC.award of the bursaries should be restricted to students from schools in the “sponsoring” district and selection should be a public exercise based on results.

  18. the quality and performance of each sec. school can be judged by the number of students that qualify for entry and headmasters and staff held accountable for poorly performing schools!!

i am just introducing an idea….!!

  19. In Essence, zambia only has one University! CBU is a branch of Unza because the courses that are there are not at UNZA. For example, we need people to study Medicine or Law at CBU! Vice versa we need people to study Accountancy or business administration or Achitecture at UNZA. But as you already know by now thats not possible at the moment. So lets build more Universities and find Lecturers to teach. We dont want to have Universities with no Professors or PHD lecturers. Lets not dilute our Education!

  20. #23,you have UTH in Lsk why have med students in kitwe…you have the mines on the CB..why have the school of mines in lusaka?? the central province has the most farms..move the school of agric to Mulungushi University?? accounting and business admin could be in either towns even though their is greater commercial activity in the capital and more options for research purposes!! building new varsities is not an ideal suggestion for now( just my humble opinion !!)

  21. Zambia’s future well-being depends on the the quality of the people that live in it. Flooding the country with substandard education will not solve anything. It is like having a car with all its parts being defective! You will not get far! What we need is a serious GRZ with a plan to make Zambia a centre of learning, mining, food prodcution, water management, etc. Right now, we have too many lawyers whose growth model is on over invoicing the few clients they have and roam about with big tummies and large cars. We need quality engineers of all types to be able to work on solutions we need with the looming global warming and their associated sciences.

  22. People must realize that one cannot wish or pray poverty away. We need quality knowledge factories. These are schools and universities. We have been accepting junk schools in the name of basic schools. These places do not even have science labs to speak about. This is why people now believe in hoccus poccus as a way to become a better nation. LPM and his GRZ must wake up and dismantle the basic schools and set up proper primary, secondary and post secondary institutions. LPM sent his kids abroad for secondary education as proof that he did not believe in Zambian education. At UNZA, the library is full of old books and the course notes nver change over the years. As a result most lawyers …

  23. ..just copy their materials. We cannot develop into a better Zambia when our science and technology are buried deep by lawyer LPM and his friends. Those wigs on their heads will not ensure that we have no floods next year. Planning against floods is a science, and is thus political. If we have leaders who have blank minds on how to settle down in any location with the use of geophysics, then it is political we need politicians that will acknowledge their science limits and promote those with knowledge to technical jobs.

  24. It’s important to have as many institutions of higher learning as possible. However, this Mulungushi University should have been started from the scratch if the intention was to spread Higher education. At the moment it comes at the expense of another insitution! But that is what you’ll get from Politicians – making decisions for political expediency.

  25. Bravo, well done! At least one University per Province by 2020,i know it is expensive but private ones also can help the lack of places in Government controlled universities.
Look at the number of these institutions in big Brother NIGERIA.

  26. Ba Kalunga(30), most Nigerian degrees are not worth the paper its printed on !! my colleague has two masters from Ibadan and Lagos universities……..he’s never spent more than 10 days in either town.becoz he was already practising in his “profession” the admission officer “suggested” for a small fee, that he get the degrees first and then acquire the knowledge whilst on the job!!!

  27. We also need to revisit technical schools, maybe a few more technicons for hands on technical training because there is ample evidence of the country’s lack of absorbtion for academic program graduates. Artisans and technitians can employ themselves if all fails but churning out more sociologists and development studies graduates will just swell the ranks of graduates flocking out of Zambia to fight it out in the diaspora

  28. 4 Universities I think!! There is UNZA, CBU, Northrise, and now Mulungushi. Hey, i love the name: Northrise University. A Journey for a thousand miles biggins with a single step. And that step must be in a right direction. Had government done the same with ZESCO you guys might not have experienced outages. Look at the blame game going on!! Hahaha, Zambia the real Africa.

  29. We need not only a number of universities but also the man power to lecture in these institutions. The bottom line is that Development goes hand in hand with expertise which are acquired
from institutions of learning .That is to say from the lowest to the highest learning institution quality must be the driving force. In short there is need to plan before we move on o mushrooming universities. A lot is at stake here. The teacher is not well feed so are the learners what do you expect.First things first.

  30. The fact that we have not embraced Science and Technology the advancement in terms of infrastructure development and the much needed technological advancement will continue being a nightmare to Africa and Zambia in particular. When you look at China today all eyes are own her because the people are hard working and love their country. We need to be proud of our nation if we are to build it.We can not claim to be Zambians and run away from developing our country in the name of poor conditions of service. The Chinese never ran away from China instead they toiled to success and today we all want to rush there.Brethren let us come together and continue building this great nation.

  31. SOME OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS TO SORT OUT IN ZAMBIA
    1.Nepotism
    2.Tribalism
    3.Corruption
    4.Boot licking
    5.Illiteracy
    6.Poverty
    7.Lack of Patriotism
    8.Jealousy
    9.Unemployment
    10.Laziness
    11.Alcoholism (Being wide spread)
    12.Drug Abuse
13.Dependency Syndrome (Wanting someone to do it for us all the time)

The list seems endless but we can start from here.

    Love You All .

  32. What the Government has done to come up with “Development Zones” is really great and lays the foundation for our development.Coupled with good Laws Zambians will smile in the near future just like the Chinese are reaping the benefits of this great program. Those who come to Invest in Zambia should be ready to build infrastructure to support their business. In short Government should show them bare land to develop not giving them shops meant for us {the locals}.And the companies should be in partnership with Zambians so that even when the foreigners leave we can run the companies and enjoy the infrastructure they live behind.

    Hahahahah

  33. Do we nid mo univesitiz(One in each province for eg)?DEFINITELY!At any cost?MAYBE NOT!Thats why tho i welcom Mulungushi,I fear it came ‘at any cost’,ie,fulfilment of political promise levi made about havin 3rd versity b4 leavin plot 1!Lets aplaud & supot govt efots-but lets demand especialy infrastructural dvelopment, maried with ‘quality lecturers’,& good funding.MY HUMBLE SUBMISION:1.let us(govt, prive sector, genral citizens)wrk at improving curent 3 vesities.(2)let govt set clear standads for private versities that wil enable those that meet them gain enaf respect to compete with curent 3 vesities=I have in mind eg Northrise,Catholic Univesty in Kalulushi,SDA Univsty in Monze etc.We nid to

  34. get rid of peception that ‘some univesitiz are mo equal than others’,thus young pipo are forced,eg,to leave Nothrise & go to cbu.Yet let these versities earn watever prestige based on their quality.but govt must take lead in defining ‘quality’,by seting standards.i pikd on Catholic & SDA universitiz, coz being church backed, have potential to compliment govt efots,if supoted, while we have others like Cavendish,Australian Inst…wich, sadly being private, are sometimes regaded suspiously, ritely or wrongly,as merely being busines minded.3)Quality wil ALWAYS BE BETTER THAN QUANTITY!GOD bless our country.

  35. Way to go. Those critics in diaspora should be glad for others that will have an oportunity for higher education. It is sad a situation to criticise and offer no solutions. How many g. 12s are languishing….tonnes!!! Doh!! Atleast somebody did some critical home work and came up with this idea. It’s either you put up with the idea and support it or you shut the f..ck up!!

  36. It is totally myopic and unrealistic to think of increasing universities to whatever numbers when our two universities have been humstrung due to pittances government allocate them every year. The same two uni are so dilapidated and cannot even attract qualified lecturers. Some departments have no PhD holders let alone Professors. Which foreign students would think of studying at UNZA or CBU? Closures are endemic and students are always bewildered to hear that UNZA/CBU has closed, barely a day after opening. What a big shame! We need a complete overhaul of government and usher in leaders who will treasure and invest in education. Epectetus once said,” only the educated are free”. For real!

  37. Investing in education is one of the key steps to positive transformational development. Thanks to the republican president for taking such a serous step to declare it as Mulungushi University .

    Love you all

  38. I think the Mulungushi University has come at the right time. The time when there is need to train enough man power to drive the economy of a fast growing economy like Zambia. Let the University concentrate on offering distance learning to be accessible to more government workers even in places like Shangombo who can not easily be granted study leave by some evil boses.

  39. The university has come at the right time. But we also need to take care that it offers courses that are most needed and relevant to the new economy.

Let us not train people to join the unemployment lines afterwards.

  40. ok its good!
but first and for most before establishing the so called universities and colleges they must see to it that they first have a WEBSITE. please!!!!!!!

  41. Good idea to upgrade the NCC into university for it will help many people to be educated than just having one university, which was the case before. This time around people can choose which university they can pursue their studies than it was in the past. Infact, it will be more better to open many universities because they will be compiting with others for they are in business. Most Zambians wants to be educated ,but the draw back is because of the fees charges. If these universities want many people to be educated let them be reasonable in their charges. It’s not a matter of skimming people no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but quality eductaion is also needed of late we have seen people graduating when asked what contribution they can make the development of the country they shan away.

  43. Open up your senses people in zambia i feel that best way is having more universities to avoid corruption, tribalism and other related cancer. Check DOR SILLYA AGIAN appointed as minister for education can we development like this

  44. JIMMY AKA BAZUNGU MU 2008 IMIS says''Much as we appreciate its existence, govt shud send much mo qualified lecturers. During my time it wasnts easy but against all odds i managed to succeed." Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Qualified and experienced staff is required at the compass. Na ma fees find a way of adjusting them downwards so that even other students can afford tertiary education.

  45. The coming of Mulungushi as a University is welcome but we ask the administration to introduce a degree course in International Relations.

    Career Diplomat

  46. Students from Mulungushi university must fight for a degree in international relations. There is need to have competent career diplomats which we do not have now. Moreover, international relations is not offered in other existing universities, if it is offered, it is not offered as a full developed discipline. therefore Mulungushi university could start training a new wave of career diplomat and conflict manager, and human rights activists.
