Government says it will soon transform Kwame Nkruma and copper belt secondary teachers college into university colleges to enable teachers upgrade their qualifications and skills for quality education.

Education Minister Professor Geoffrey Lungwangwa said the ministry has also decentralized the most of its responsibilities to lower the levels up to school level programmes and other developmental projects are being implemented at these levels.

He said this during the world teachers’ day celebrations dubbed ‘’Teachers matter’’ held at Hubert Young grounds in Lusaka today.

The minister noted that the theme signifies the importance and critical role teacher’s play in building a just and moral society culminating into economic progress of societies.

Professor Lungwanasgwa also noted that government has continued to find ways of improving the conditions of services for teachers in the country.

He however noted that a rention scheme has been introduced for head teachers in hard to reach schools by way of provinding them with vechilesand has also the transformation of NISTICOL into manpwer training skills centre to provide administrative and management skills to schools and colleges mangers to enable the manage financial resources and human resource well.

and spaeking earlier secondary schools teachers Union SESTUZ president Nyambe Sefulo urged government to seriouly come up with a strategy to upgrade all Diploma holders to graduates and all certifficate holders to diplomas.

mr Sefulo further noted the need for government to consider increasing the taechers pay which is currently below the basic basket for the to ensure that teachers are wel cared for to deliver quality education.

And Zanmbia national Union of teachers ZNUT general secretary Roy Mwaba also pointed out that need for for government to recurit more teachers which is according to the UNSECO it is estimatted that about 18million more teachers re needed world wide if Universal primary education is to be archived by 2015.

  1. Professor Lungwanasgwa advice Science and technology Minister to create or upgrade Evelyn Hone College into a University college, so that Paramedicals and others can upgrade their qualifications and skills for quality education also

  2. it is not just about converting all kinds of institutions into universities. high standards and policises must be implemented. the government must seriously look into the issue and not just try to lure our countries citezens to voting for them by making hollow promises

  3. “Government says it will soon transform Kwame Nkruma and copper belt secondary teachers college into university colleges to enable teachers upgrade their qualifications and skills for quality education.”
Mr Minister Lungwangwa, this is tantamount to an off-side football. Kabwe already hosts Mulungushi University and Kitwe has the Copperbelt University, why not take the new university to Mwansa or kasama to empower the Luapula and Northern Provinces which appears to be lacking in education. Former President Chiluba and presidential aspirant Micheal Chilufya Sata both come form that side and they are undereducated. This shows that somethings needs to be done there in education.

  4. I agree with Pandamano, why colleges like Evelyn Hone College still offering certificates course in 21st Century? Evelyn Hone College is very big institution which can be offering Degree and Masters Courses. Kindly look into this issue Mr. Minister

  5. #3 continued. Sata hit back on KK by writing that “what did KK do for Chinsali?” and these are issues you need to tell people and Chiefs in Luapula and Northern Provinces.
If you can do that there, then change Livingstone Teacher Training College into a University so that we see that you, Minister Lungwanga, are serious about what you are saying instead of just joking with voters’ minds.
Nipabwato, ubwato which is sinking on October 30, 2008, for good.

  6. No 1 and 5 you are right. I was expecting to mention our Evelyn Hone College of Art and Commence to be converted into the University. Government considers our suggestions. This institution is respected very much both in and outside Zambia

  7. The suggestion of converting Hone College sounds good. You are thinking. Keep it up .I hope the Acting President Mr Banda is listening with his Science Minister

  8. yes we watch what are they doing? am waiting to watch cheaters so that i can be 1 step ahead of my wife.

  9. Evelyn Hone must remain what it is – a college. Gentlemen we can not upgrade every college into a university college. Those who want degrees should go to CBU.

  10. which school did prof. lugwangwa come from? how can you even creating more problems without sorting the ones at hand?

YUNZA and CBU are being managed like a preschool in chazanga.

  11. I don’t agree with you number 11. CBU do not offer Paramedical Courses and is only Evelyn Hone College, which even other countries depend on this institution. So its should be upgraded also.

  12. Improve n th infrastructure first,nt transforming js for th sake of calin it a university…gud thot bt lacks bk up..elo wth a katekaa like rupiah,hu aparently hs favorite spot at hs govt hse ofice is th bed..kanshi,al these programes wil b snails pace..

  13. Many teachers especially in the teacher collges are half baked. This idea of upgrading colleges to universities has been in Zambian politics for some time now. Mulungushi University in Kabwe is an experiment. Can the Minister of Education enlighten the country on the progress of Mulungushi since it came into being. I hear there is another Catholic University in Kalulushi. I agree that these universities should be even spread out in to ther places such Mansa, Kasama, Chipata, Livingston,Mongu and Solwezi.

  14. Mr Minister Lungwangwa, instead of exciting our minds please tell us how much money Minister Magande has allocated to ensure that your outbursts are put into place.
Tell us also when this initiative of Teacher Training College transformatin into universities is expected to take place. These are the sorts of information we want to hear as opposed to rhetoric only to hoodwink well-trained Zambian minds.

  15. Power 2 Zambia, you are thinking. We should have Universities in all the Provinces, just like what KK did by building colleges in all 9 Provinces in Zambia

  16. Mike Mulongoti seems to be suffering from diarrhoea of the mouth and constipation of the brain ( From Post Newspaper)

I hope Professor Lungwangwa is not suffering from the same

  17. Why do people always bring up Kaunda, that man made us line up for cooking oil, sugar and mealie meal. Apples did not exist, Chocolates where only in duty free shops. One party dictatorship, I am in my twenties and I still remember; though I agree Hone needs to be a university.

  18. I totally agree with everyone. Evelyn Hone college must be converted to Evelyn Hone University. I am still wondering why it is still a college after so long. We need more universities in Zambia.

A good economy is an educated economy. Convert Evelyn Hone college into a university.

I am also for the idea of having an arts and business university in livingstone. This university will offer arts degrees in terms of theatre, music, art, history, geography etc and business degrees like hotel tourism, accounting, economics, banking and finance, marketing, commerce etc and also a few science degrees. We can call it Livingstone University.

Please tell me what you think.

  19. #23 great contribution. On the Elvelyn Hone, I think it does not have the required lecturing staff (Masters Degree holders) and a senate to run it as a university. However, this can be fied if there is necessary Political Will.
Otherwise, I am advocating for atleast ONE university in each provincial capital so that we can have a normal student loads at UNZA and CBU and this can inturn help with load-shedding by ZESCO if we shun overcrowding of Lusaka and Copperbelt together with kabwe (Mulungushi University). Just for your information, it appears there is a university in Livingstone called Lingstone University of Technology. Monze in the SP hosts Zambia Adventist University too.

  20. @#24 Mwiiyi waku Musanza

Do you see why I want HH to win. HH realises that where there are no skills, import the needed skills regardless of race or ethnicity.

Converting Evelyn Hone college into a university can be done. If you don’t have enough people who hold PHD’s then import the people who hold PHD’s. Don’t forget that Universities don’t only teach, they also do research. This can improve Zambia’s ranking in terms of research and development.

As for Livingstone, the reason why I said an arts and business university is because that is the TOURIST capital of the country. If we develop forms of entertainment (to the point where people say they want to come back), it’ll improve[tbc]

  21. tourism in the country. And also the reason I also said business is because people will acquire skills to run successful business (which deal with tourists) from this university. The other story is setting up a good line of credit but we’ll get to that in a later date. Right now we must think of educating as many Zambians as we can get because an educated economy is a healthy economy (Literacy rate in iceland – almost 100%).

  22. #15!!! What a statement. I do not agree with you when you say that “Many teachers especially in the teacher collges are half baked.” Can you expand on your allegations.
As much as I agree that we need to have many if more universities in Zambia we need to first check the infrastructure that is available. Do we need to upgrade some of the already existing ones or build new ones These I think are the best lines of thought we need to travel through. We need to examine the current institutions on what kind of status they are in. What would be more costly? Good talk Prof but how much does your govt hold in the said speech? Is it just a campain crew? Do not take teachers for granted. I hate/

  23. In fact, I am the original Maestro Hhehhehhehhe. I have jumped in the PF ubwato for now to drill some holes in it before I leave it sinking.

  24. Lungwangwa is dreaming, the two colleges already have UNZA affliatian and most of their diploma courses are monitored by unza. so what is he talking about? we need such university colleges in other places other than kitwe and kabwe which already are enjoying the presence of universities.
What of northern, southern, western, eastern, luapula and northwestern provinces, dont they have colleges worthy upgrading? we are tired of development along the line of rail.

  25. #25. My analysis shows that HH will reclaim most of the Mazoka Lusaka votes and improve his perfomance in CB Provinces. He will perform far much better than Sata in Eastern province though RBB might carry the day in EP because of obvious reasons. As for the Northern and Luapula provinces, HH will come out below Sata and RBB for obvious reasons, but his performance will be better than that of 2006 elections.

  26. According to impecaable and reliable sources that I have, the Incoming Zambian President to-be HH will win by landslides in Central, Northwestern and Southern Provinces. We will also out-do RBB in Western Province but the margin will not be very much. Since RBB’s stronghold is the Northern Province RBB will share it with Sata. Sata will take Luapula.
The most impoertant thing is that RBB and Sata will knock out each other by sharing votes while HH will win the Southern Province which is equivalent to about 2 provinces Luapula and Eastern province. So, the game is already over. This is cause for our celebration starting now.

  27. Nipabwato boys and girls.
    “Nikalasiti boyi kanalengesa” – Danny.
    Viva kalasiti PF.
Viva kalasiti Sata come October 30, 2008.
Vote Sata for Politics-Exclude in Zambian Politics.

  28. We could start by having universities in all provinces offering regional qualifications. As these regions (provinces) develop, more money can be spent on these ‘universities’ to upgrade them to international standards. This has worked in the US where they have national (state and private) and regional universities.

  29. Ok, Awesome ideas and all but what about jobs!!! Y’all, this is killing us! Zambians study very hard but then what???? We need change like yesterday!

  30. @ #35 Texchick

That is where a good line of credit comes in. University students who graduate with a masters degree can create jobs if they do not find them. To do this, they would need low interest loans from a good credit source. First we start with education, then finance.

There is no way I can give a loan to a fisherman if he doesn’t know how to fish. It is better I give a loan to a fisherman who knows how to fish because that fisherman will buy a net and catch a lot of fish which he will sell and pay back the loan.

I hope you understand from that.

  31. Okey am goin to be really dumb here and ask..Whats a UNIVERSITY COLLEGE….???please someone explain..
why not just separate the two and build two of each then u get two for the price of one a UNIVERSITY AND A COLLEGE…??
on the other hand like someone mentioned before where are these new graduates going to work anyway…??

  32. We have heard this story (Nkwame Nkruma, Mulungushi Rock of Authority, Open University, COSECO)so many times since 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and now 2008. Dont lie bane this is all rubbish. Why turn these colleges into university colleges if the government has been failing to employ all graduating teachers since 2005?

  33. Some Tongas on this site are a shame and shadow of mature and well meaning Tongas.HH is in opposition so as Sata, Why concentrating on PF and not MMD the ruling party with all the resources you can think of. You are the same people who have always been blackmailing HH and his party as Tonga property. It shows Sata is a threat& not MMD. The truth is, your tribal hate of other tribes especially the Bembas is your perpetual down fail of HH. No wonder the truth always pains you that you are the real tribalist in Zambia and this is a truth. It will take another ten to twenty yrs for a Tonga to rule unless your tribal hate evaporates over you faces and learn to accept others as part of you.

  34. Contd: One may think you being highly educated with sound knowledge will help you to preside over your forefathers mentality of tribalism and hate of other tribes.

  35. We shall always “transform” and “up-grade” and never build modern infrastructure. We are still waiting for the Mbala “airport” to be up-graded to international standards….you remember that. Soon we shall transform the great east road into a rail line… hahaha… TRANSFORMATION.

  36. is it just for the sake of it Prof Lungwanggwa? you are failing to run the two that are in existence already.do you have capacity to run more than two? do we have enough lecturers to undertake your dream?

  37. #8 Pumpy, BIG Brother has been BANNED IN AUSSIE (OZ) (this years show was the last) it just lost its tatse & spark.

  38. a step in the right direction. Consider more perks for lecturers for all the universities, then the idea will work. For now it is music to the ear.

  39. #44, Muzungu Wa bulakajo is simply; a boss who does not pay you or pays you very little, don not consider to work for him. No work no pay basis. The Kaondes like this saying.

  40. The problem that I have with the proposal from the minister is on the sustainability of the universities. If it is very difficult to look after the two babies that you have, how more difficult is going to be, if you added another baby. You should think of Bursaries to students, upgrading infrastucture, employing more qualified lecturers and so on….

  41. #48, Thanks for enlightening me, it sounded a bit ‘offish’ sounds in BEMBA. Am not Kaonde.. sorry about those thoughts which crossed my mind.

  42. I now STRONGLY BELIEVE #32 IS “THE ONE AND HAKAINDE HIMSELF” VERY RESTLESS AS TIME TO GO out of political picture is nigh!

    DELUSIONS OF GRANDEUR!

    STOP BEING DELUSIVE.

    CHRONIC PSYCHOPATH.

  43. UNZA now offers degrees in Pharmacy and Bio-medical sciences. Let hone continue being a college. But the infrastructure needs to be improved still

  44. Mr Minister, Please remember other areas such as Western province where you come from, Eastern and Northern provinces for educational development. These areas lack such facilities of higher learning(Universities). Developmental issues must be equaly shared by all the people of Zambia. One Zambia One Nation – viva KK

  45. It is not so much about upgrading a college into a university college, it is the funding that matters. How is this going to be possible if they have failed to adequately fund UNZA and CBU? Tell them, they are just b*llsh*tting!

  46. Why not at the Copperbelt University?? The CBU has capacity as well as a lot of idle land on which new buildings could be constructed.

  47. the two universities can not cater for the whole cuntry we need more universities.look at bostwana. as small as its populayion is they have mre universities than us

  48. Transforming old colleges isn’t enough. We need new Univesties in each province. The few colleges we have aren’t sufficient to provide for the ever growing Zambian population.

  49. Is that what they call trades schools now? University colleges. I guess graduates will be called degree diploma holders. Hey let’s rename secondary schools into university-secondary schools. I think that makes it sound more interesting. How about hospital-clinics? I’ll call my daughter woman-girl. At work I’ll call one of our workers the boss-cleaner. From today on it’s not bus driver but air-pilot – bus driver. Really we have very smart president-ministers.

  50. I prefer few universities. It brings out the cream on the other end (atleast, more often than not). We just need a bigger productive industry to create more jobs.

  51. Running a university is not like running those salaula schools you call “Basic Schools”. Zambia does not have the capacity to have many universities. The facilities at UNZA and CBU are pathetic – libraries are not well stocked, no proper labs for serious research, inadequate Internet facilities, inadequate accomodation, unable to retain high calibre staff, etc. As for those who want to see Evelyn Hone College converted into a university please think again. That college is a big joke. If anything it should be closed because it is a health hazard. I will give details if required to do so.

  52. It is overdue for Evelyn hone to be turned into a university college. Nortec also needs to be turned into a university college. Turn every provincial teacher training into university colleges too. then build new colleges in each province. Further, let LCC fire brigade boss be fired.

  53. This idea of upgrading something into something is really a mockery to the Zedian pipo. Y not leave these old ones the way they are and construct new ones with proper planing? Changing names is not development, If you say this is now Kamwala High Schoo, what have you done to the old one? I am very annoyed with the way the ministry of education has been doing things. Lets construct new skuls and train more teachers,

  54. It is the MMD govt is upgrading all colleges to Universities without taking in consideration infrastructure availalable at these so called University Colleges. Let us first improve the facilities at UNZA,CBU and Mulungushi before establishing new Universities. Instead of renaming old institution let us build new ones otherwise at the rate we are going we will have no high schools as they will all be renamed as colleges!

  55. Promises promises promises we have heard those lines before its a great idea but the universities we have are in total chaos i say we put our house inorder before we embark on such ventures

  56. Instead of simply renaming institutions, let the govt build new master piece universities in all the provinces. I believe only HH and his lead govt will do that. An uneducated president will never think of building universities. All he will be saying is ” mwe ba sambilila tamutontonkanya bwino. Ukuteka te masambililo” Meaning you do not need good education to make a good leader.
A good leader is one who is well read. Not just reading Zambian newspaper political articles about events of a previous day activities of their political parties.

  57. #63 village university. Have you seen any university in Australia that looks like the so called universities to be in Zambia. Let us face reality, The bench mark for any institution to be called a university in Zambia should be UNZA. Prof Lungwangwa has lost touch of what a university should be like. Shame! He is talking politics instead of applying inductive or deductive reason which he should know too well.Prof you are letting us down.

  58. Iwe No. 12, Pre – schools are well organised than UNZA. My kid has never stopped going to school, unless if its a holiday.

  59. Ladies and Gentlemen please I need your advice, if you plant a mango tree, after it starts bearing mangoes then you decide to change the name to start calling it pineapple plant.

    Will the fruits change.

Zambia will always be reaping what it sows. These politicians are not serious, when they compare Zim with those Universities they fell ashemed. The solution is not changing the names but finding solutions which are workable. (Start building infrustracture).

  60. The MMD Administration and the Ministry of Education in particular are not helping us in any way, they have specialised in names, let them be transfered to Lusaka City Council. Maybe our streets can have names for once.

  61. I am a Livingstone resident, the requirement of a University in this place is long overdue.

Rumours had gone round that the David Livingstone Institute of Technology would be opened, we can’t see it coming into effect.

Now his Hon. the minister is talking about the teachers training colleges becoming University Colleges, when will we ever have our share of the university education.

Being a tourist capital very few people find time to go to school, there is too much beer drinking and humanizing here, please come to our rescue, we tired of night schools, we need quality education

  62. Mwiiyi waku musanza, you have a very big social problem. You always divert from what people are talking about on the blog and start talking about SATA. I am sure you suffer from Tribal-Inferiority-Complex (TIC). Wakeup man. Every tribe has a degree of tribalism but what matter is to what extent? I don’t like talking about tribalism but you seem to suffer from it and am forced to do so. Everyone in Zambia knows which province practice tribalism to the highest order. Its not a secret that the ruling party never won any sit from southern province. So please if you suffer from tribalism do not infect us, we are above that.

  63. #69, some of the good universities here were tafes or technical colleges. we have seen them being transformed in full fledged universities in all areas of uni life which includes infrastructure development. this can happen in zed if we will have a president and politicians with will to turn things around

  64. Thank you #74 people, i thought maybe i was being harsh the guy has got a problem, actually you are right he is ill. I still will offer him a free bed at the mental hospital near him all costs paid.

  65. 1.Gentlemen on one hand we are complaining of qualified staff for 2 universities on the other hand we are increasing the number of university. Do we understand that Quality is achieved both through the raw material and the process.
2.Can someone tell me why we are in a hurry to produce Doctors before nurses, engineers before technicians & craftsmen, officers before soldiers etc. Saturate the base, build a foundation then go up. That’s why we end up with Chinese bringing bricklayers because most of us are either structural or civil engineers.
    3. Let us re-think this building from the top.

  66. #69,Somebody, Australian Universities are part of the major national income for the country due to high International fees levied to students. Besides that, International students work so hard to sustain themselves as the cost of living is very high. Even Aussie born students don’t have it easy to get into one especially Monash University. A country like Zambia needs a well articulated educational system.. if only all the brain drains could return home and foster the development.

  67. Let us build from the scratch. We cannot just be deaming of higher education without investing in proper infrastructure. Plaese let us see sense.

  68. Baice muleumfwa icingeleshi bwino. University College calola mukutila, it wont stand as a university of it’s own. All universitites have colleges or schools in other terms. school of law, scholl of humanities ngafilya. Eya, so ngabatila universaity college, ninshi tabatile they will stand as autonomous universities. Epo mpelele bane mwebasambilileko ukuncila naimwe kuti mwansambilishako apo nashala. Ulemfwa iwe mwaice namba filii #3?

  69. ok nachipwa, its over get back to your work bonse bunang’ani ubo. who ever will comment below ninshi lilofwa may God help you!!

  70. Truly when are we going to have new infrastructure in this country? Now i agree that politics is all about lies.It was announced last year in July that the three Luanshya-based institutions under the Ministry of Science and Technology would be merged into a university college by December or early January 2011. This statement raised alot of dust,as some of the Heads of these institutions, resorted into huge expenditures with a view of exhausting what they call theirs. I would like to appeal to Hon. Peter Daka to move quickly before public resources are completely mismanaged by these selfish “Gentlemen”

  71. A mfumu ( RB) tipasenkoni nase ma ng”anda tigule sure tavutika na ma management boards kuno ku TVTC and L.T.B.C colleges ku Luanshya. We have been disadvantaged as Lecturers in these two institutions as far as housing impowerment is concerned.PS and Hon Minister under MSTVT ( Mr.Criticles Mwansa and Hon P Daka) will you interceed, I know RB has not been told about our problem
