Fire at radio phoenix explained

Share

The Lusaka City Council fire brigade section says an electric short circuit caused the fire that gutted Radio Phoenix recently.

Council Public Relation’s Manager, Chanda Makanta, says this is according to investigations into the cause of the fire.

She says the probe has revealed that an electric fault ignited insulating material in the audio section of the radio station.

Mrs. Makanta also says the slow response to fires in the city by the fire brigade is due to operational challenges such as lack of fire engines.

She says the day radio Phoenix was gutted, the only serviceable fire engine was putting out a fire at St Ann’s funeral parlour on Mumbwa road.

The Fire Brigade was last Friday condemned for it’s slow response to stop the fire that burnt the 13th floor of radio Phoenix at ZIMCO House.

  1. i wonder how the investigations led them to to this conclusion or is it just a matter of saying something so that they are seen to be working.

  2. The fires in the city are proving to be a real challenge and much to the displeasure of alot of us. However, before aportioning blame onto this one or the other, we should first of all ask how much we have invested in the same industry or who should. Personally I feel its time to wake up and vote wisely. But who among the four standing is a wise choice? The onus and equally the blame lays on each one of us.

  3. What are the authorities doing about it? Same excuse of inadequate fire engines all the time. We are tired.Something must be done.Acquire more engines, divide Lusaka into Zones and apportion an engine or two to each specific zone.

  4. All electrical installation are purpose to have protection devices like circuit breakers. For a fire to have started im given the impression that this building does not have any circuit breakers and therefore it has not met the electrical safety standards and must shut down to protect lives

  5. 1 fire engine = ZMK (RB x 10), i.e. K15,000,000 RB’s brown evelopes times 10 equals K150,000,000. More-over no customs duty will be required.

  6. The short circuit can be act of sabotage, which can be the only explanation caused by the MMD mike mulongoti. Never be cheated the MMD with mike mulongoti they to put this country on fire twakana m****** mwe bamakaka.

  7. The Burnung down of radio phoenix is a pure scum …Insurance Fraud if you ask, This bird is not rising from the ashe’s this time,
but however the big wigs in this company are going to walk awya with a huge pay off .
Go sip on martini’s in Baja while lustening to a Slap Dee cd . while Mumpi’s cat gets Fed

  8. Why do these people think we are so foolish to believe what they say? Dont they know we know its the same station they burn all the time?

  9. Zambia nids a leadership that can prioritise issues.Today evry Jim and jack in Govt drives a new car yet we cann’t afford fire engines. Do we have funds allocated for the purchase of fire tenders or not? Problem is that LT you don’t prode beyond the statement!

  10. Indeed its a sabotage, why dont these fires happen during the day when people can easily put them out? Please whoever is behind must stop because radio pheonix is losing alot of properties worth millions of kwacha

  11. Its funny that what they always say.’Its an elecrical fault that caused the fire.’People need to start taking their jobs seriously. Even just determining the cause of a fire is a problem.

  12. In Ndola, firemen went to extinguish a fire only to notice that there was no water in the engine coz it had been leaking for sometime. Mopani Copper Mines engines had to ride all the way from Kitwe to put out the fire in Ndola.
    Kwena ubufontini tabwakapwe!

  13. Poor Management, poor Planning, if we have 3 buildings on fire in the city then will let 2 burn to ashes. Next government should look into this not just giving envlopes and over looking important things like this.

  14. Mulongoti at work….. I believe there’s something he’s trying to cover up and the only to do that is by burning down the station along with the evidence

  15. When was the last sfety audit done on the building? Was the building certified fire free. It is just not well to say the cause of the fire has been identified.

  16. People this why we should vote for leaders who sell themselves by addressing such important issues during campaigns. We shouldn’t fall prey to statements that are just there to entice e.g “more money in your pockets” “free fertilliser for wall widows” let our candidates sell them selves with real issues how and what their polices are in the various sectors of the econconmy lets grow towards maturity like in the USA where it truly issue based.

  17. Sata tell us how you are going to manage to bring new fire engines within 90 days how and where are going to get the funds we need to know before we can give you our vote. Remember you have promised to do alot within 90 days don’t you think you should have given yourself more time say like 180 days or even a year it is an economy you will be running which also dependant on external factors we maybe politically independent economically we are not

  18. The biggest city in the whole country has only one fire engine, what a KANTEMBA govt!!! And these are the very same people who are running around the country dishing out sugar and distributing the disgusting brown envelopes. At the same time they ask for high pecks and for vehicles to be given to chiefs! Which do they think are the priority areas?! Probably their bottomless pockets and the backyard of their huge houses!

  19. #14 you should see the ones the british govt donated,
there old model and move at about 60 km/h and damn there old

  20. WE ARE WAITING FOR STATE HOUSE TO BE ON FIRE, THEN WE SHALL SEE THE RESPONSE IF IT WILL EVER BE SLOW OR NOT.

  21. Why is it that radio phoenix gets gutted every now and then? They should check with there engineers. Or is it an insurance plot?

  22. Let the Engineering Institution of Zambia be part of the commission to investigate these fires.I feel the installation violets some engineering standards.

  23. 44 years after independence and we have one lousy fire engine in the bleeding Capital City? Absolute joke, if you asked me. Serves to show our level of preparedness for disasters, that.

  24. Comission of inquiry or investigations in Zambia never end nor reason found. I’m suprised this one they have done it with speedy rate. already they know the source of the fire. ha country men everytime we need to know what transpired, let us blame the Govt., they will find the reasonn very quickly and we shall be told expediantely. So let us bla,e the Govt., for the Gabon Air disaster, they have been too quite and making or hoping for time to heal. Chambeshi voters remember Birgrim disaster, Vote MMD out.

  25. Toadface Banda do something please. Buy more fire engines for the city. You are busy concentrating on the chiefs with sugar and cars. What would you do if State House caught fire and they told you the fire engine was quenching a fire at The POST newspaper? We know that’s your next target after Phoenix.

  26. There u go, all explained,…some of u chaps on the blog were quick to point the finger @ the boma?! c’mon blokes, boma has better things to do than sabotage a small (tiny) radio station like radio phoenix…

  27. i personally think it a stant the phoenix guys are pooling. they burn the Radio staion and the it becomes alive after a moment, to satisfy the myth surounding the phoenix story that its a bird that burns and is reborn fro its ashes.

  28. Some of the things they donate tells alot on how they look down on us. USAID donated DDT to stop our mosquitoes. Go to a US home and try to spray DDT and see if you won’t end up at GUANTANAMO.

  29. The first time it happened I was sorry. Now I’m ashamed with Hickey. Lousy crook. Insurance fraud. Very clear at that.

  30. #6 makes a lot of sense by suggesting that Lsk should be divided into zones. I live in Sydney and and all major suburbs have a council to attend to their matters and provide all necessary services. Pa Lsk we have one city council to provide services for so many surbubs and shanty towns and at the same time dal with land issues…its impossible to provide any form or service with that kind of arrangement. It also makes it hard to collect rates and other charges effectively. We need new leaders that can explain a better way forward for Zambia.

  31. I think lusaka from the look of things is a very dangerous area to live in, am trying to imagine the didstances from one area to the other we clapd half tank in our car just to visit our freind within lusaka and the traffic was that bad. Now in case of fires how do these pipo reach u on time, may be their short cuts i dont know. Zima Ndola

  32. pa zed ni zee…radio phoenix, aint this like the second time???remember 1996??? & that building is still laying idle…

  33. VIVA HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  34. I’m scared for my country, everyone keeps making promises.I’m really scared. While we bicker Zimbabwe next door have an inflation rate of 23,000,000% I’m scared.Mwe Lesa tupokololeni ko

  35. I would not like to work in one of the high rises on Kairo Road knowing that there might only be ONE Fire engine available in case of an accident. How can someone concentrate on working when we all know how the electrical wires are fixed here.
In Germany there is the system of a voluntary fire police in every city and village. There are 13 volunteers in every 1000 inhabitants. They all do it for free and train in their off time. Why is it not possible to set up a system here in Zambia like this? You do something for your community without being paid for it – people do this in all other countries too. No sitting allowances or other allowances – you have to get used to this kind of service for

  36. civil society.
As far as I know there is a program between the City of Hamburg/Germany and the City of Dar-es-Salaam to set up a voluntary service like this. The City of Hamburg is even helping with fire tenders and personnel to train the volunteers in Dar-es-Salaam. Why can Zambia not try to set up a voluntary fire police like this??????

  37. I, witnessed a fire out break in Kent , Sittinboune London. a lady left a boiling tea pot on the stove and there was smoke, smouldering from the window. There where 37 fire engines in attendance. I, have been a fire man before in Zambian mines brigades which are better equipped than council run brigades. Government needs to invest heavilly in the fire service. stop blaming innocent firemen who are working under very difficulty situations with, out dated fire fighting equipment with no back up fire hydrants in the city. Firemen can not fight fires without back up fire hydrants. Ask what Lusaka water and sewarage are doing about supply of water to fire hydrants. It’s a shame.

  38. Fire madam Makanta does not turn into an inferno like that. Electrical faults first heat up a conductor, then the insulation and ofcourse in the process realease heat and smoke that has a bad smell depending upon the material the insulation was made from. All these pre-inferno conditions can easily be noticed by even a 3 yr old child. A police officer smoking in a tent at central police and throws a hot cigar butt that later causes fire is also an electrical fault? Zambians, most excuses attributed to electrical faults by the so called investigators are true lies. There are other issures behind. Period DONT BEHAVE LIKE MULOGOTI MADAM
