Dispatching teams to conduct re-assessments unnecessary, Choma DC

Share

Choma District Commissioner, Laiven Apuleni, is disappointed with the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, DMMU, for the alleged lack of confidence in reports submitted by district authorities over the extent of hunger in the area.

Mr Apuleni said he expercted DMMU to rely on available data compiled by relevant government structures put in place at grass root level in order to urgently respond to the current food crisis that has hit the district.

He regretted that DMMU was dispatching teams to conduct re-assessments of the hunger situation instead of considering assisting the affected families with relied food.

Mr Apuleni was speaking in Choma today when he met officials from DMMU Lusaka, who are in the district to conduct an assessment of the food situation.

He said it was regrettable that DMMU was sending officers to verify reports of food insecurity, when the food situation was worsening and required immediate measures to save lives of people in the area.

Mr Apuleni said the district administration and other ministries were adequate to provide reliable information which DMMU could use in responding to the crisis.

He argued that the current assessment would only serve to buy time when the situation has gone out of hand.

“These offices are adequate to provide you with information upon which you can base your action. It is disappointing that you have no faith in local structures put in place by government to collect information and give it to you,” he told the DMMU officials. “The ministry of agriculture has capacity to provide details on the food situation.”

He said while all the 26 wards have been severely hit by hunger, DMMU has only adopted 12 wards to benefit from relief food, a situation that creates a serious problem for the district.

One child has since died, while two others are battling for their lives in Choma general hospital after eating suspected poisonous roots due to lack of food.

  1. Guyz i have carried out a research and its sad that most of our friends are pretending to be outside Zambia but they are all very much in Zed including Maestro,Sarah Jones, Sarsh,Baby C and the rest. To me this has just comfirmed that you are selfish and not proud Zambians. get real cause everyone here on the blog is very much in Zambia. ^:)^

  2. This utter nonsense. Why create local reporting structures only to ignore them and send officials from the DMMU? The money spent on transport, accommodation and allowances for the DMMU officials could have been better used to tackle the starvation they are trying to re-assess.

  3. So sad that we are now losing lives from hunger. I can imagine how many hunger deaths go unrecorded. But don’t you think now is the time when our so much revered TYCOON Comrade Hakainde Hichilema should at least do some charity work or mobilize his billionaire colleagues both home and abroad to assist the people of Choma, which is part of his strong hold. I guess he can afford some charity work for a genuine cause such as this one.

  4. “He said while all the 26 wards have been severely hit by hunger, DMMU has only adopted 12 wards to benefit from relief food, a situation that creates a serious problem for the district.”

What about the other 14 remaining wards?

    :)]

  5. #9. Mukelabai,

You do not have to call for TYCOONS to help in this situation. He that has two shirts, let him share with he that has non (Sata inclusive). **==

  6. hunger is everywhere including Lusaka and this is no ones fault. what do you want the government to do? they cant manage to feed the whole hunger striken people in the country, i think people should just be encouraged to work hard.

  7. Good morning bloggers, someone said tuleposhyana first before commenting. Congrats Sony Ericsson, you’re luck I overslept.

Those claming to be outside Zambia, tel us , which part of the same countries, area, street do you reside in???? and please tell us your favourite pub, restaurants and the church you go to, were you work, school and the like.Dont google please!!!!!

  10. #28 Mia, You seem to be frustrated that there are actually Zambians living abroad, but it’s nothing strange. If you think that people lie on here: Let them do so, you can’t make them stop. I’m sure LT knows very well who is blogging from outside or within, ask them to issue a list.
It would be my pleasure to tell you my favourite pub, restaurants and the church I go to, but not where I work and my address because that is confidential. Anyhow, I can pass you my email address if you like.

  11. #28 Here in the UK there’s what they call Data Protection Act. It is a legal matter that safeguards people’s privacy. So some people may not be willing to give you via internet their identity – ie prof of address, work place etc as the data can fall into wrong and fraudulent hands.

I know for sure that some bloggers are outside Zambia. You can perceive it through their contributions, they dont have to tell us. If anything, what matters is that we are sharing ideas on this blog, not where we are located. Thank God for Internet, & LT.

HH is nt the only tycoon in Zambia please. There are, within Choma, people that are even better than HH and I feel to mention his name here is unfair.

Its time the Govt addressec this hunger situation as it has this duty to its peole. I doubt whether RB is alert enough to watch and deal with Ministers like Sichilima that become a disgrace to society .

  13. #28 Mia am here in the UK freezing my butt off… but not willing to give the details sorry as some are shushushu and some are just 8-x

  14. I envy the bravery of Apuleni. But i must be quick to point out that soon rather than later the guy will have no job. In MMD it pays to lie and lie until one lies no more. Apuleni is giving RB a chance of exercising his authority, the guy will soon join those in the streets of zambia, although what he is saying hold a lot of water. Watch this space.

  15. That’s so whacked up! You are in Zambia and you’re pretending to be outside, for what? That’s so spooky! Wonder what else that is said on this blog is so far from the truth. People lie even on things that are so petty. Apuleni, its all about allowances my friend. That’s why we are getting donations from the likes of Nigeria. :d

  16. Those time wasters finding out where each blogger is are showing signs of so complex. Does it really matter where an idea on a topic comes from? Lets find solutions to problems presented here than witchfinding.
I dont’understand why govt. wants to spend money when they have the facts on their table, instead of acting fast. There is a tendance to carry out fact finding missions in zed at a high cost and finally shelf the findings without implementation. JUST GIVE PEOPLE FOOD BEFORE MANY MORE DIE, FULL STOP.

  17. The DC is indirectly telling the so called officer to stop wasting goverment resources when there is a real crisis that requires urgent attention, which the president must look into very seriuosly. Lusaka people always want to travel unnecessarily for allowances.

  18. You have been following the wise cracks originating from the so called abroad, mister. That explains your indifference. Of course it matters where you say you are. Why shouldn’t we be truthful with each other? How will we believe that your solutions have the nation’s interest at heart, if you won’t even be truthful about where the f**** you are? Very basic!

  19. I think Mukelabai just hates HH why mentioning him on this when he has nothing to do with this topic. Those people know their rights and they pay tax so it is the government’s duty to give them when they are in need, why are you so misinformed Mukelabai that you do not even know your rights you are people who destroys democracy because you just vote for the one who gives you handouts. Those people whether they voted for RB or anyone else they have the right to government money, the people in government are not the only ones who pay tax everyone does even when you buy the smallest item like a needles. So wake up Mukelabai and know the real issues here.

  20. Anyway Mukelabai I do understand the country you are bloging from, really there is know human rights you think the party you vote for is the one that can delivers development or relief food, thats why they will never have democracy. The government is the engine here to deliver to people as long as they are tax payers whether they voted for them or not. The party that forms government is the engine here and it has to deliver and the people have the right to demand from them what is due to them. Southern province never voted for Mwanawasa but under his leadership he took a lot of development there. Know the facts and blog with knowledge. 😡
