President Rupiah Banda  this morning  laid a foundation stone for the construction of the Pepsi plant whose owners are to invest about US$ 30 million for the period of six years .
The company will also  employ 214 Zambians in various capacities and create over 600 indirect jobs in various capacities, there by reducing  the pressure on the job market.

Speaking  at the ceremony held at the Pepsi bottling plant in Lusaka’s Mungwi  road  today,  Mr. Banda  said government  will continue to lay a solid foundation for diversifying the economy in order to sustain the country’s  economic growth.

He said, this will minimize the negative impact arising from the global economic down turn.

Mr. Banda added that government is also committed to  the development of a vibrant and competitive manufacturing sector .

Mr Banda however said the plant will add  value to the Zambian  economy and will contribute to the realization of the  vision to transform Zambia  into a middle income country by 2030.

He stressed that with  the re- introduction of  Pespi, Zambians will enjoy affordable high quality drinks and related products at competitive prices adding that the project will save and earn the country foreign exchange.

Mr.  Banda stressed that the launch of the company  has come at a good time when the  slow down  in the global economy has exerted considerable pressure on most of the economies around the world.

And  commerce , trade and industry minister Felix  Mutati noted the need to diversify the economy  so that  investors can come in and invest in  many sectors

Mr. Mutati thanked the Indian government for its continued commitment  in assisting Zambia  through  providing employment to the local people.

He noted that both the company  and the Zambia government and its citizenry will benefit from the investment.

  1. This is a good move. This will provide jobs bot directly and indirectly. Good move Mr. President for wooing investors.

Now where is Luapula Fish who said FDI will decline to come explain himself. I mention India is one of the key partners to partner with during the global recession.

    Luapula Fish, what say you?? =;

  2. We need more such investments but I think Zambia needs to add more value in its agriculture than opening a Pepsi drink company.

My worry is the longterm health effect of these sugar based drinks.Very soon, the Minister of Health will start worrying about problems caused by some of the drinks.Look at the obesity in the UK and America.Do we reeally want Zambians to be obese ? No I dont think so.

Please can Zambia focus on agriculture and adding value more value on our produce/

  3. agriculture is better than those fluids you are supporting. a tonga bull and atonga cow will need kulima mapopwe which is for every common man in zambia. how does a local man benefit form pepsi what is it for only kaponyas will do by selling pepsi on the streets but again you are chasing them from the streets even them will not benefit we want the youth empowrment funds not pepsi

  4. I hope its not another Tax Free Company that has come to suck out our money and then dissapear after a couple of years. :-w

HEY GUYS, RB IS AWAKE !!!!!!!!!!!!
    GIVE HIM SOM =d>=d>=d>
    he looks tired though.

  5. Jamaco

    All bloggers,

    Peace and love.

    Punde Punde,

Thank you so much for your comment on me yesterday.I love you so much with Christ like love.

  6. In the quest for greener pastures, some zambians have got jobs in German Zoos not as keepers but as ‘animals’. They dress up in the animal attire and pose in cages because real animals are expensive to maintain. This zimandola was given the role of a monkey and since he was good at gymnastics, he was swining one day from one branch when it broke and he landed in the lion’s cage. He cried out loud in bemba ” mayo nfwa ine”………Read my next comment..

  7. Well isn’t l-) delivering now. For 40 years the country couldn’t even make a canned drink. All the canned drinks in Zambia are imported from here-SA. Now we can do it locally and soon there will be markets for our aluminum resources and a recycling plant will be set up and who knows, before you know it we shall be manufacturing cans for the whole africa since we are pushing the energy agenda strong.

RB has started delivering. Wait till you hear the budget. Your jaws will drop in awe of this man.

The Economist is in charge for the first time in the history of our country. See how he shows all these cadres and buss conductors how it is done and Zambians will never vote a Grade7

  8. Pepsi dis, pepsi dat, waah gwaan Zedians, dem a pepsi we, yu nah see? I an’ I done wi di fast food ting…me rather support functional, botanical drinks like Ganja tea & Sensi juice.

  9. Hope the Pepsi company will never ever allow its product at any point be associated with pictures of RB coz the man is ever sleeping and may give an impression that Pepsi is alcoholic as number 14 has aleady asked.

  10. Well done Ba RB. Atleast some postive results from you since you started your work. Any thing postive we can wait from you sir…! 😉

  11. hey guys this story is not new.if you check the achives of Lsktimes, you will find this story it came out while Mwanawasa was still alive. when did RB go to India and negotiate the deal. please don’t praise him yet. lets wait end of next year and then we can judge him. all the investments that are being announced now have been in the pipeline and just waited for the next president after the death of Levy. Even the budget, 90% of it was already done by the time the new Minister took over.

  12. when these investors are just coming in, they are very humble but after anchoring their roots, they get very arrogant. minister liato learnt it the hard way when he was chased at the gates of a mine in northwestern province.

  13. That sounds good.Very wonderful but am so sorry to say there is much to be done by the presidential advisory committee.Honestly how can you let the wonderful and most respected leader of a BIG NATION like Zambia, moreover still leading as president of the Republic of Zambia to stand with a pepsi bottle(advert mina batu–mwebantu).Even a ministerof commerce is too big in a position to do that.
We know your good works,we don’t need to see you on some 600job adverts. Please don’t use His excellency in that way. That’s image distraction.Let our leader do professional work. Please please please

  14. #11. Jamaco busy chuffing Imebo pa LT shuwa? Please continue adding some flavour to the Pepsi story. Ala chi internet chisuma, chila chita translate at the click of a mouse.
It’s a worrying trend in Zambia where investors walk straight into statehouse. What is the investment centre for then? If I go to plot 1, I get 100% shares. No Zambian partners, later on you force me to list on LUSE and I leave the country, profits intact at the end of my tax holiday. This has to end. I hope this wont be the case this instance.

  15. This is a good move but the location leaves much to be desired. Why Lusaka. This city is already congested and is an easy breeding ground for diseases.Come on.Is Zambia Lusaka only.

  16. pespi an investiment? Better not even to annouce it.
Can industry looks much better than pepsi which gonna give bad health to our kids.
let them also build juice industies in zed. We’ve mangos, oranges, pineples, apples and other fruits in zed.Infant zed can make a lot of money through making such industies.

  17. #41 Russia Moscow, I agree with you. Such news does not excite me at all. I like to look at long-term effects. Investors are not dumb, they have perfectly calculated their moves to their own advantage. They know that Zambia offers cheap labour & low production costs which they can never afford anywhere else in the world.
They will be there for 6 years and them pull out with millions of turn-over leaving another broken house of hope behind. Watch them…

  18. My former Chemistry teacher, a Mr. Joseph from India at Chamboli Sec Sch used to say, “Don’t drink Muzungu Chikoloki, drink African Chikoloki! All Muzungu Chikoloki has is Carbon dioxide!” This was after we had made CO2 in the lab and talked about soft drinks and Carbon dioxide!

  19. This web has been designed to share ideas and values of national importance, hence need for the contributors to write sensible things and in languages that can be understood by every boby. Make your contributions in english or one of the Zambian languages. Well, we might have left Zambia long time ago, but surely we haven’t forgotten our languages. The pepsi project is vital for the national development, the 30million will stimulate the economy and create jobs. But they shouldn’t be externalising profits, evade tax and run when they have made enough money. Gov please be hard on so called investors, they should not be allowed to do what ever they want, they are not doing us a favour.

  20. Just a thought; These publicity stunts, would RB be chuggin’ a ciggy or pullin’ on a lager if they were opening a cigarette factory or a brewery?

  21. how much will be the starting salaries? these chaps they just talk of creating jobs yet they just pay them K24.04 ngwee per day. 🙁 RB is even happy coz of the fizzy drink in his old throat. we need more milk than pepsi

  22. Number 47. Hi bro/sis.We have a global economic down turn, no wonder countries like US and UK are bailing out most companies using tax payers money in order to stablise the economy. We dont have maney as a nation to bail out companies or stimulate the falling economy. So if some one wants to invest 30million, well.. the better. As for the salaries of emplyees, thats where gov should come in and impose a minimum national wage like it is in UK. Our people shouldn’t be explioted by investors- its sad. Gov and the union should do something. Zambians are hard working people, but we dont have people to drive the economy.

  23. Good move i only hope people wont be paid peanuts from such investors, especially Indians. By the way how are we doing with the new labour policy?

  24. Good project, but why send the president to officiate instead of the minister of commerce, common now, somethings are too small to make the president officiate.

  25. hope Zambian people will get good Jobs because you know how indians all the top jobs their will be for them. No more beer for RB now.

  26. >:), here we go again, indian tamangas promising to invest $30m over six yrs?! $30m my a_$$! does anyone even care to quantify these so called investment pledges? Since FJT days, Zambia Investment Centre has ‘recorded’ hundreds of millions of USD that has never come to fruition. Surely, did we need to have Bwezani sipping on Pepsi & endorsing these mwenye’s when Mutati would have done so?! Next, these buggers will get serious tax relief while Zambian SMEs continue getting shafted.

  27. its time for Zambian Breweries to wake up with their poor conditions of service and rude mgt by intimidation should be given a wakeup call.

  28. This is not the real investment to be proud about. Pepsi is an American company that compete with Coca-cola head to head. How come ba mwenye (Indians) are involved????
I would celebrate if this investment was backed by Americans. Indians are not good investors. Talk about Kafue sugar who have failed to compete with Zambia sugar.
Govt, please do not give them abnormal incentives.

  29. There is nothing wrong with Indian or Chinese investment. the problem we have are the weak Zambian labour and consumer protective laws. These same investors have invested in Europe and America without much ado. Don’t be cheated western europe and america survives on goods made in China. The only difference between our friends and in africa is that they have minimum standards while accept anything. The British brain-washed us so much that we think the good investors are those from europe or america. But, look at what the British have done for us, Kitwe town center has been like that for the last 50 years…

  30. agenuine investments do not come easily imagine for some one to land with Zambia after a world wide search and they say well compared to Angola, Zimbabwe, Congo, Mozambique and Ethopia or Sudan, we not after all a very poor country if a company is willing to risk its $30,000,00 USin Zambia. Be a little proud of yourselves and you will find more reasons to be.

Good point the President is supposed to be commissioning Nuclear plants

  32. First you killed Tarino and Quench your own Zambian products now you bring Pepsi. You call that progress. Plus the entire president sipping a canned drink. Imwe baku mawa, no longer wise. I would have said a lot but my wife is from there.

  33. What nutritional value does Pepsi bring to Zambia? Can’t we bring big time farming investments so e can have a big time revolution

  34. China gives Zambia K326.9 bn
Zambia has acquired four consessional loans and a grant worth K326.9 billion from the Chinese government.

The consessional loans include K139 billion for the completion of conference facilities at the Government complex in Lusaka and K109 billion for an ultra modern stadium in Ndola.
ZAMBIA BENEFITED FROM DEBT RELIEF; GOVT HAS NOW STARTED CREATING DEBTS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS GIVING CHINESE MANDATE TO LIVE IN ZAMBIA FOR YEARS…PLEASE HELP ME UNDERSTAND THIS! WHO WILL PAY BACK THE DEBTS?

  35. Thank you #65. #69 has a very interesting question. We killed Kwench because we believe it is only something from the west that is good…brain washed again. Let us work with people who are prepared to help us develop, and please remove stereotypes. At the same time we shouldnt be naive and think these investors are here to help us develop. They are businessmen whether they are from the east or west. Look at what westen greed has done…the credit crunch. When you live with these people thats when you begin to understand them. They are not in africa to help us, but to advance their on selfish interests. I rest my case. Namaya mukulya ubwali.

  36. Paltry salary might equal two meals a day instead of the going rate of one for the lucky ones who will get these jobs.

  37. Peter pan of the world ,almost 45 years of independence and our leaders are still talking the same language of “INVESTORS”.

  38. Canned Diabetes and tooth erosion formula., soon the government will be sending it’s officials to south africa for dental problems. Why doesn’t this president become the face of mabuyu or masau juice a traditional healthy zambian drink, he already has a built in sour face. If I was the president I would be taking pictures with musale, vingaingai and manina yaba nkote so that at least I would lead by example in healthy zambian fruits

  39. Shalapungu Banton thanx so much that day you really encouraged me.I will never forget you boyi.Rb thats the kind of investment we need.

  40. OK JOBS WILL BE CREATED THATS GUD…BUT THEY WILL TAKE MOST THA PROFITS BACK TO THA U.S ETC WE NID TO TELL’EM WE TAXIN UR BUTT SO DAT WE BENEFIT DATS WAT GOVERMENT NIDS TO DO

  41. LOOK YOU CHAPS. LUSAKA ISN’T THE ONLY PLACE FOR DEVELOPMENT. WHY NOT CONSTRUCT THAT PLANT IN MONGU, KASAMA, MANSA, ETC. ARE YOU ENCOURAGING MORE URBANISATION.

  42. “The company will also employ 214 Zambians in various capacities and create over 600 indirect jobs in various capacities, there by reducing the pressure on the job market.”

Good, but what are those indirect capacities?

There is hope for Zambia and President RB Banda seems to be on the right path. All the best Mr President RB Banda and may you have good health and a prosperous 2009.

  43. 41. russia -moscow , what sort of an SDA are you who is blogging on the Sabbath?

I have good data for you regarding your postings in the ww w. lusakatimes. com/ ?p =7409 thread where you seem to have had some time writing useless stuff on me when I was busy with the ADVANCED ROVER competions of which by God’s grace my team become number two so I went home with a yet another prize.

Please, find my responses to your comments and post your reply to [email protected] if you need further clarifications.

  44. 94. russia -moscow, you wrote “I think mastro lacks something.People who have been to universities see that education is there just to support us.I’m still at university and see sata as a person with a virsion. How many people who have doctorates have been presidents in da world? How many educated people do we have in zed?”

Check your English and mine and see whether your Russian univeristy can compare to UNZA where I did my undergraduate.

Also, check the news on ww w. lusakatimes. com/ ?p = 7346 as I will use it below to quote things for you, younger man.

  45. 94. russia -moscow, what vision not “virsion” probably do you see Undereducate MC Sata having? IS it the vision of macheting fellow Zambians with pangas and other stuff using PF thugs this time following his MMD thugs display in Chawama?
On how many educated people do we have in Zed, please with the Ministry of Education as to how many people have been up to Standard 10 or Grade 12 through passing the examinations under the Examination Council of Zambia. Also, check with the British Council in Lusaka on how many have sat for the London/Cambridge School Certificate exams and passed it in Zambia.
You will have an idea of how many educated Zedians are there at the moment.

  46. 94. russia -moscow, you also wrote “what are they achieved in zed? They can’t even see tht 50+1 will be good for zed.Only sata among politicians sees tht.I’ve never heard HH talking about 50+1.Tell me what he can offer if he can’t see 50+1 is good 4 a country?Mastro u’re stubborn for no reason.”
How many people have educated leacturers at UNZA and other tertiary institutions also Secondary and primary School taught life skills? Isnt producing educated Zambians who are working in almost all countries especially paying tax to GRZ to sponsor you, russia-moscow, to learn in Russia an achievement? What is happening to your brain younger man? Is it working properly? Convince me its proper working!

  47. 94. russia -moscow, you also wrote “They can’t even see tht 50+1 will be good for zed.Only sata among politicians sees tht.I’ve never heard HH talking about 50+1.Tell me what he can offer if he can’t see 50+1 is good 4 a country?Mastro u’re stubborn for no reason.”
Please, quote for me that alleged position your have accused Undereducate Sata of by his actual works and providing the link to it soonest!
On your ill-informed rant on president HH, I will show you that you read news in a disillusioned way deliberately to miss HH’s well meaning points below.

Did you need spectacles to read this news you seem never to have seen or you misread it because of your illusions regarding Sata whom you claim has a vi(r)sion, russia-moscow?

  50. #94. russia -moscow, on “Maestro Hhe,i don’t know why u can’t see tht HH doesn’t know anything even if u call him educated.Educated people have already seen tht Sata is only person who cares about zed among our politicians. He knows what’s needed for the country. He’s not educated but i like him because he knows more than the educated HH.why going to school if u know everything?Better you make school 4 people who don’t know.Sata knows almost everything.Schools are there to educate people who don’t know and just 4 a stutas,” I have just realised that I have been trying to teach/educate a thick headed character who has chose to overlook TRUTH right before his eyes due to self-deception.

  51. #94. russia -moscow, on “Maestro Hhe,i don’t know why u can’t see tht HH doesn’t know anything even if u call him educated”, is it me who calls president HH educated or it is the testimony that his obtaining Merit in a BSc Economics programme at UNZA that shows HH is EDUCATED?
Younger man, what are you doing in Russia for you are a true disgrace to educated Zambians throughout this Earth?
You couldn’t answer a simple JAVA programming question which ‘Abena Copperbelt’, your fellow 7th Day Adventist (SDA) asked you last year since you claim to be “we’re all adventists” in # 100 above and you claim I cant see.

  52. # 100 russia-moscow, which SDA Church are you a member of? Are you a baptised SDA member or a Sabbath School SDA member with these our SDA two categories? If you are a baptised SDA Church member, do you attend Main Service only as a PASSIVE SDA baptised member or you are an ACTIVE SDA baptised member who attends almost all or all church programmes from morning about 8:30 to 17:30 hours on Sabbaths learning truths and useful life stuff to equip you with Bible Knowledge that will help you stand against the Mark of the Beast enforcers?
Your behaviour leaves much to be desired younger man!

  53. #94. russia -moscow, on “Educated people have already seen tht Sata is only person who cares about zed among our politicians. He knows what’s needed for the country. He’s not educated but i like him because he knows more than the educated HH.why going to school if u know everything?Better you make school 4 people who don’t know.Sata knows almost everything.Schools are there to educate people who don’t know and just 4 a stutas”, can you give me which educated people speciafically have already seen that Sata is the only person who cares about zed among our politicians as I am not part of them educated people please?

  54. #94 russia -moscow, what does Sata know that is needed for the country that he did not do as Minister of Portfolio (3rd former President Chiluba in running then Chiluba Administration MMD GRZ)? On ‘He’s not educated but i like him because he knows more than the educated HH’ opinion, I will take it you deserve right to it. This opinion of yours is clearly out of emotions as you yourself puts it that you LIKE Sata. On “why going to school if u know everything?Better you make school 4 people who don’t know.Sata knows almost everything”, whay everything does Undereducate MC Sata know? He doesnt even construct English well like you russia-moscow!Please ask Sata to help you with that JAVA problem.

  55. #94 russia -moscow, on “Schools are there to educate people who don’t know and just 4 a stutas”, is this why you are in Russia studying? If this is the case then you are wasting tax payers money younger man and you deserve to have your sponsorship withdrawn forcing you to re-pay back the money GRZ has been wasting on you. I will leave it at this as I would not want to educate a time and country money waster like you for nothing but to have STATUS, not stutas if that is what you were meaning in your terrible writing.

  56. 100. russia -moscow, in your “‘Mastro!!we’re all adventists and our church don’t support such writings of conderming the un educated.I don’t know how u contribute on sabath school coz u like ideas. U’re the people who bring politics in church just because HH is an SDA… Mr mastro, bring new ideas on this blog.we are tired of yo Ctrl c and Ctrl v.Happy sabbath! Go and study Spiritual Gifts and Prophecy.it’s tomorrow’s lesson!”, young man I strive to study the Study Guide everyday instead of doing a quick unsatisfactory rushed reading on friday. Do you know whay there is a study for each day of the week? It is not tomorrow’s lesson but a day to day lesson for the whole week.

  57. 100. russia -moscow, where did I condemn the “un educated”, please quote and provide a link? In opposite to you thinking, I have lovengly been calling for the Undereducate Sata, 71 yrs, Grade equivalenvy=Standard 4 or Grade 6 school drop out, to make sure he doesnt miss out on registering for Grade 7 exams slated for this 2009 year end since the better President RB Banda Administration has been providing free education to all those who want to go to school including MC Sata.

  58. 100. russia -moscow, I go to Church on Sabbath to worship God in TRUTH AND SPIRIT participating fully normally in all discussion following “[KJV Bible] John 4:23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” There is absolutely no room for politics for me at church (see Isaiah 58:13)!
What new ideas MUST I bring on the blog? The Holy Bible I use is old. This entails that HISTORY is very important. Sata has a history of which I will continue to expose (see below). The SDA Church uses the Bible and History to expose the Roman Catholic Church and others regarding the coming trouble.

  59. 100. russia -moscow, Ezra, Daniel, Revelation, Matthew, Thessalonians and History tell it all. Only unprepared characters will find themselves in trouble when Jesus Christ shall come. russia -moscow do not just try to memorise scriptures on Friday evening for the Sabbath School classes discussions, but study them throughout the week for your advise to me shows that your behaviour is dangerous. You need to be prepared all the time, younger man.

  60. Ephesians 5 + NIV Bible
5:8 For you were oncep darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of lightq 9 (for the fruitr of the light consists in all goodness,s righteousness and truth) 10 and find out what pleases the Lord.t 11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness,u but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the lightv becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said:

    “Wake up, O sleeper,

    rise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

All the best russia-moscow in changing your mind for the better.

  61. After all these years Cocacola’s competition arrives in Zambia. If the prioritise, more is to come. The lord God bless Zambians more with work ethic and insight. 🙂

  62. Pepsi drink some chemistry is no good for the body. With the current hiv statistics in the country we need more of dairy companies and juice making companies.we need a health Country

  63. Zambians need to find this guy called Chiyaba Njovu. In my view he will move Zamobia forward. I have personally met him, he is simple but extemely knoledgeable. work with peopeope like him fot the interet of Zambia. You have it all in your house.

  64. This investment is excellent news. The doom mongers will always something to complain about but this has more positives than negatives for the Zambian economy.

  65. Can pepsi give jobs to Zambians with good conditions, if not so, they will go quicker than they would come.
At the moment lets hide our joy for they say ‘not all that glitters is gold’

  66. our president possin,sippin pepsi?

  67. Timbalife,i think you are a leader why not gun for these political jobs?”the ultimate in serving people is public office, think about it….
