Govt determined to improve aviation industry- Siliya

Share

Communications and Transport Minister, Dora Siliya, has reiterated government’s determination to improve the aviation industry in the country.

Ms. Siliya says government will continue to rehabilitate facilities at the country’s airports to ensure they meet international standards.

She says the move will also help to promote tourism in the country as more tourists will be able to visit various attractions in the country.

The minister was speaking in Lusaka at a cocktail organised by Kenya Airways.

And Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer, Titus Naikuni, said the airline is willing to partner with authorities in Zambia in the promotion of tourism.

The Zambian government has indicated that efforts are underway to re-introduce a national airline.

  1. The Aviation industry has been privatised, the market forces will keep those with buisness accumen while those without will collapse under heavy debts.Dora continue encouranging the expansion of Zambezi airways and the resuurection of zambian airways if possible. This is a global village so we must embrace even foreign owned aviation companies. just to make things clear, Please no bailout for any one of them who cant survive competiton.Competition is a neccessary evil in industry.

  2. I wonder if we really need a national airline.
Like the defunct ZA govt. officials will have free rides,
the Crew will engage in Makwebo and the tax payer will foot
the $2 Million dollar a day subsidy.

  3. There is no need to get excited ,we already had a natioanal airline. Before introducing one lets examine how Zambia Airways collapsed. If it was management then even the new airline will collapse especially with traffic congestion in lusaka, cadres ill prefer to be flown by the new airline

  4. Since when did Siliya knew how to find solutions apart from reading out loud stuff meant to be the news?

Question 1. What’s happening to the smo “Zambian hhobama”?
Question 2. When are you electing this blog’s committee to regulate some careless out of favour outbursts?
Question 1. When is the “hottest chic on the blog contest” going to be launched?

Obama soon to become the most powerful man on the planet couple of minutes from now…….
Terrorists ass still smarting from some beating but still defiant they have won the war when their surroundings reminds you of the earthquake

  5. This is what happens when a Journalist becomes a minister, they become immune to media critism and blackmail proof even to the Post. She will talk and they wont touch her else she will ask them to address the people of zambia what exactly happened to Zambian airways, she has made clear that they themselves the directors and not her ministry are answerable to zambians over ZA. upto to date non of the directors has issued a statement or produced a report. in the meantime she is having dinner as a role model and mentor to the journelist interviewing her including those from the post. [Mbesuma and Ronaldo on the pitch one will have a cold feet]

  6. M’membe waletelera banzeke. The government wants to punish M’membe because of his ant RB campaigns. His 3 million dollar loan which he got from Investrust has gone in water.

  7. 😡 Dora babes, ulichikali! Your professionalism makes us proud. Let the haters hate, but pls stand your ground and NOT be intimidated by that confused marxist chap (Fred Mmembe). In todays tough economic conditions, let the fittest survive! The only point I disagree on is the formation of a national airline. Bad idea mdm, we should have restructured QZ when we had the chance. It’s not critical for us to have a ‘national’ airline & we should spend our meagre ngwees on food security, education, healthcare & infrastructure!!!

  8. #16 Pumpy
Yes you do. I propose the MAMPI/SUNCHILA award. Okay because your names sound similar and yes as a woman you MUST be a hip-swayer. Nothing wrong with that

  9. Dora what are you trying to do with Zambian airways???i truly know that you have shares in Zambezi airline…what a way of doing business in Zambia…SHAME!!!

  10. My apologies for intruding on you in this manner but I would like to know if any one of you happens to have a copy of ‘The memoirs of Dr. Guy Scott’.

  11. Dora should also sort out the ZA saga! she :-@ too much and do nothing to help the local industry! she was busy entertaining guests of a foreign airline instead of finding a solution to help Zambian airways.

  12. My goodness me you do? Could you care to send me a copy to an address I will shortly forward in a moment at your consent.

  13. 26. Baby C

Ask the directors of Zambian airways to explain to you why the company has accumulated a $30m debt and collapsed. ZA is a private company and Dora has never worked for that company. As a minister her job is simply to give policy direction and ZA has not collapsed as a result of any policy. Dont you wonder why the directors have kept quiet and have even failed to submit a report to the minister in effect keeping the muinistry in the dark. even the paper that digs dipper is not publishing any statement from the directors or the board. Dont you wonder ?????

  14. How come evrybody is ignoring the corruption at the Ministry of transport? Why is LT not talking about Dora Siliya`s deals with Railway systems?

  15. # 24, Dora Siliya has no shares in Zambezi Airlines. Zambezi belongs to Nyiombo (Jangulos) and some other foreigner but four of them and non among is Dora.
Same as Zambian Airways, Zambezi is in private hands… what should the government be doing in private companies? but of course protect its own, NACL. Please leave Dora out of this. when did you see the Government try to salvage a ntemba. imwe bantu please. Let ZA pay NACL we need our airports to be improved to more latest and advanced standards noti ukaseluka pa OR uona monga uli pa london. **== Musiyeni asebenze nchito yake and advise bene Nchito to be more professional in running their organisations…

  16. even if ZA aided in tourism or whatever the fact is the money went in their pockets (Nchitos, Mmembe, Rossi). let these guys just pay up all the loans and other obligations.

  17. Engines

What is the current status of the situation as far as QZ is concerned? Are they owing to other institutions outside Zambia? like in S.A, Zimbabwe, Tanzania for landing rights, airspace accommodation etc

  18. 36. Anonymous

Now you are talking. very well spoken. a bailout to ZA should mean a bailout to every jim and jack whose kantemba is collapsing.

  19. #32 that is a fact yes, but are you therefore suggesting that tax payer money bail out a private entity that failed to manage itself, surely that’s life and/or business, one suffers setsbacks but moves on…the total debt to the banks is over US$4 million if i recall + in all intense and purposes they probably have a first fixed and moveable charge over all the assets of Zambian Airways. Should the company go into receivership at the behest of the banks, then US$4 million maybe the going price for all the airlines assets, which in todays order of business is not alot of money. ZA under a new name will be up and running in a hurry leaving the remaining liabilities to be sorted out by ZA itself

  20. 39. Anonymous

The debts owing to finance bank, Invest trust and national airports are just a small part of the $30m. The guys dont have planes, apart from the two small old decommissioned ones the rest are leased on negotiated payment arrangements from some SA firm through some european financia, then the airline was bought from loans and this is where the huge debt is coming from. As for landing rights and airspace those where on cash basis in all foreign countries. its only in zambia where they defaulted.

  21. Hi Engines #55, if i can correct you there, ZAs bought its two 737s for US$2.3M each using funds lent to it by a syndication of local banks (see Executive Issues i believe November/December Issue). I agree there is not much of a fleet to talk of, as one of the two 737s has been parked at the OR Tambo airport for months, and was replaced by an aircraft yes in ZA colours but one which is on lease from a foreign based company

  22. The Zambian way of improving the aviation industry and promoting tourism is by closing Zambian Airways. Note that Dora is saying all this at a coctail party thrown by Kenyan Airways. The resurection of Zambia Airways is but a pipe dream, maybe another way of syphoning money from the govt coffers by our leaders.

  23. #64 ba anonymouse I am not aware of such a book anyway… and what would I entertain myself with if I didn’t have conspiracy theories? 😕

  24. 61. Karma
Hi karma, check the latest edition of THE WATCHDOG and THE EXECUTIVE ISSUES those guys never bought a single plane the two small old ones were inherited from roan air. It is infact the lease of the two 737s that lead to a swell in debt.

  25. Shibumi, the way of improving the aviation industry is to ensure the weak are seived out and the strong survive, no sentiment attached…market forces!!

  26. Sony Ericsson Phiri

Just to prove to you that this book exists watch out for it here on LT I will offload it the coming hours. I know I can get it.

  27. Dora Siliya spare us your words without works. We cannot afford a national airline with this irresponsible govt. All you need to do is save the ailing zambian airways.

  28. Baby C, yamu jazzi iyo, ati ‘mulekosa panse namukati’!
So ati mukenda shani pakubwela? Pantu nga mwapita ku Nairobi baka miseecha panka mukalufyepo katundu yenu. Takwaba ukupita fye, ka!

  29. I have never liked Dora. She was OK with Chishya Folotiya then as usual the the way the educated ambitious ladies do,Broke up with him only to hook up with ka Richard Kazala. Time she was in Egypt as an embassy staff frequented Chingola to be in the arms of ka Kazala (former minister sports) former MP Chingola and now Nchanga rangers chairman. Ha they really posed. Well this is tit bit hope Bloggers are not offended nor annoyed. Leaders must be exposed, they are public figures period.

  30. I believe the POST have been trying to unhook their 3 million dollar investment loan in ZA from the debt that is owed by ZA. In other words THE POST is untied in as far as its obligation as share holders in ZA. Meaning that if the crunch came to its worst, THE POST and all its assests will not be affected.

They are cleverly trying to disassociate themselves from ZA. Bayamba ku menyana manje bekha bekha.

  31. Engines is right (again) these guys never bought anything! Also the banks were really dumb to finance the two 737-200s as the last time they came off the production line was in 1982. Both planes were long overdue for a major overhaul. Was a matter of time before one dropped.

There is nothing to bail out!! better off traveling to consolidate Proflight and Zambezi

  32. THE POST claim that they obtained the 3 million dollar loan from Finance bank not under the terms of investing that amount in ZA. That is the last straw and M’membe is gearing himself to fight it out tooth and nail. How far he is ready to go, no one knows. But the battle line has been drawn.

  33. 77. Anonymous
The thing is the Post borrowed from investrust as a separate entity from ZA. This means that if ZA goes under voluntery liquidation, investrust will not go to strip the ZA assets and will have no reason to touch the assets belonging to the POST for as long as the POST is payng its quartely installments. What remains to be seen is whether the POST will keep up with the payment without Dividents from ZA. $3m + interest is not a small sum and certainly without ZA dividents the POST’s balance sheet will feel the effect.

  34. Guys bushe prof. wangozi tapitileko kuno mwa? Just seen him on the other side.

Like Rashid said, gone back to the archives :d:d

  35. Sony Ericsson Phiri

I dont want to bother the other bloggers who may not be interested may be another time, if topic allows.

  36. #79. no pity

You are right there is simply nothing to bail out. when you have more liabilities than assets the only doors open are those to voluntery liquidation or bancrapcy. Any money that you can inject into such a company goes to financy the Debt, mind you this debt is not static, it has interests. Its infact cheaper to start a new one and much more cheaper to let the existing ones proflight and Zambezi conduct there busness in a proper competitive environment.

  37. Sony Ericson you cant even explain what you have read on meastro’s recommendation on the prof? is it a lack of understanding of technology and Mech engineering that make you refer to crushworthiness as accident investigation? the problem with zedians is that its full of people like you who never dare to learn anything in depth but just rush to ukubwatabwata. The prof is no doubt 1 of the top 1% brains zambia has produced excuse him your ignorance.

  38. #104 LOL why would the prof be advising on road planning when his speciality is crashworthiness? Are we going to be crashing all the time? As for his presidential aspirations that is amusing… There is no country where presidents campaign on how educated they are except certain others on this blog seem to think politics is only for the educated

  39. Determination is one thing…seeing it through is another!!! Zambian Govts. have been determined to do a number of things but they have delivered little. We as Zambians, are interested in seeing results and not just hearing baseless statements. We are kind of getting bored now. One minute govt. says this and then does the opposite. Please spare us the talk and act. You have 24months to do something significant. Atase!! :-w

  40. you see what i meant? ba sony ericson you know nothing young man and i only call you young based on the evidence of your thinking i apologise if you are older. crushworthness is a science that has everything to do with road safety you have to learn alot about traffic planning before you can design for ultimate limits of crush risk which might include for example impact modelling for different speed zones. you see the speed limits on every UK road. if you are going to apply any factor of safety in your design you what to first biuld a model of many things such as carriage way widfth urban congestion,

  41. ENGINES boyi, kalabekofye ka baby c ka jelous ninshi dora siliya achita.bushe ewaebele abena membe ukwingila muli kaloba.alebomba fye inchito yakwe

  42. contd frm #111, avarage traffic density and other things.you will have to know alot more that just typing on a key board to design a moving strucure with adequate crush intergrity. and that my friend the professor can do with his eyes closed. teach us something for goodness sake and not just running like a headless chicken in Maestro’s words.

  43. anyway that’s a good name for the prof, professor wangozi since we don’t have a word “crashworthiness” in the vernacular. Unless somebody knows one? Lighten up :d/

  44. It is really sad home. We cannot learn from the USA or UK. See how their govt are rolling out the rescue packages for their private companies. the auto industry, the banks etc. What we see is more commitment and support to the foreigners at the expense of our own. Shame on the Nyamasoya govt.

  45. Nothing against the chap he is a credit to his country but he should start as an MP like everyone else. This is democracy, people have to vote for you, not “ah but that one is educated so he should be XYZ in cabinet”

  46. #117 people like you should stop misleading Zambians. Can you name just one just one private company that has been rescued by the bailout in the WEST. My friend NONE. All those banks being rescued,GM motors are all are public companies listed on the stock exchange and owned by the public and pension fund houses. That is why they are doing the bailout. Zambian airways is a private company owned by 4 individuals and does not deserve a bailout. If ZAMBEEF went bust I would call for a bail out because NAPSA public money is there and it is listed and their books are all public. ZA we don’t even know how the used that $30m. Please cut this bailout nonsense of ZA.

  47. #107 mention a country anywhere on the face of this planet with a garde 4 president which is doing fine. live with it my friend the world is fast closing its doors for those with a bad education, i believe this is the reason you may be here as a student. but am worreid your speed at it may fail you. but i do believe in luck. never give up you could learn something only if you want to learn something from this blog am afraid you will have to stut and just listen.

    Bye bloggers!

  50. #128 so why doesn’t govt buy the airline..? Not bail out, no. Or find a buyer. Tourists are cancelling, business people are complaining… while we talk about the future imagine

  51. #136 Facts not heresay. Ukubwatabwata. Evo Morales has a high school education. that is not a lot but its better than grade 4. you cant say that is zero formal education. For your information that is the problem dont come on the internet telling false stories whuich are untrue. its a shame.

  52. Siliya feted by Kenya Airways! Richard Branson’s tactics have been passed on to KA. Somewhere down the line Ms Siliya will have to return the favour for this freebie! The Zambian tax payer will pay.It is supposed to be the other way round bane. Govt minister should be the host/ess.

  53. How can government improve tourism while it is failing to help none government airlines carrying the national flag at the moment since we don´t have a national airline.

Please don´t try to help foreign airlines as you have to work in hand with the Zambians ones. How can we develop if we don´t empower our people. Look what happen to the mines.

  54. If you mean Sata #138 you are just another useless hater, he has whatever school education, then police education, then political education, in fact he is still learning unlike those others like HH who they they already know everything and nobody can teach them

I reckon you were somehow inspired. Thank you for informing the characters who inquired about me. I left for Freiburg, Germany, around 13:45 hrs today and only came back a some one hour ago. It was a fruitful travel and I like the way Germans are clean. How I wished Zambians could emulate then.

  68. 166 continued.
On the issue the issue to do with developing uncongesting Lusaka City and my submission that LCC should consult Prof. Clive Chirwa, this came about because the Prof. is well-placed to help in safe designs of the upcomign plan.
My way of blogging is that of appreciating those who have special gifts or is it specialisations in their fields of study.
President Hakainde Hichilema remains my clear favourite for Zambia because of his expertise in Risk Management and business. Zambia needs someone who will bring us the Zambian people for economic and social sickness that has been inflict on us by the Chiluba MMD Administration of which the Undereducate was a key man in government.

  69. 167 continued.
Otherwise, Prof Chirwa is welcome to join the U-Team so that we strengthen the probability of forming UPND GRZ in 2011 for all Zambians of all backgrounds and races with an aim to econmically empower every Zambia.
The prof can then stand for UPND presidency against others as president HH will not be able to re-countest it since the UPND manifesto allows for 2 terms of president and HH will have finished his two terms in 2016 since he took up his first in 2006. Then the NMC can decide to sponsor then normal UPND member HH for Zambian President or whoever will be the party president for 2016 Country Presidential elections.

Come on you would have done better even by just greeting me if you had nothing to write to me or about me. I have written to you before that I reserve the right to my opinion. You also have right to your OPINION. I think I asked also to meet you in person to pump this sense into your mind, but you send an insult like “who wants to see you ugly face” if I am not mistaken. What do you really want/need?
