Hollywood want to shoot a movie on David Livingstone in Zambia

Share

WORLD-CLASS film producers in Hollywood want to shoot a movie on David Livingstone in Zambia, and Government is cheered that would showcase the country’s tourism potential to the outside world.

Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, explaining the budgetary incentive of 15 per cent refund of the expenses incurred in shooting movies, locally, said the Hollywood movie would help highlight Zambia’s tourist scenic spots.

Dr Musokotwane said this in Lusaka yesterday during the recording of the “Culture Remodeling” television programme hosted by the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

He said the movie based on the late missionary, who died in Zambia, would feature the Victoria Falls, wildlife and some local actors.

  1. Great stuff, but on “Minister of Finance and National Planning, Situmbeko Musokotwane, explaining the budgetary incentive of 15 per cent refund of the expenses incurred in shooting movies, locally, said the Hollywood movie would help highlight Zambia’s tourist scenic spots”, I was hoping we as Zambians will charge them Hollywood people serious money for using our pictures to the whole world.

Why does it seem that they will get it cheap? “Za mahala zinaatha.” -unknown.

  2. Goodmorning 3RqU well done, I’m yet too tired to hit l-). I just woke up after a long, long night, I’m still 8-}…give me a few more hours to become@-)

  3. 15 percent refund of costs incurred while shooting the movie. Makes a lot of sense. Hollywood is a fully fledged industry that makes enormous profits.

Zambians are poor because resources are not properly managed. Think before you over feed the sharks.

  4. Mo taim, it is not the first time a Hollywood movie has been filmed in zed. There was Touch of the Sun in the 1970s featuring the late Edwin Manda. Most of the action was around Mulungushi Int. Conference Centre.

  5. Hope the David Livingstone will be a black guy, unless otherwise coz david livingstone didnt discover the victoria falls he was just the first white dude to see it. I think the one who discovered it was a tonga dude :d

  6. What a naive way of looking at the film project. These guys are not coming to shoot a marketing film for zambia. They are coming to make a movie which they hope to go and sell elsewhere, they want to make money from it. They are not coming to do zambia a favour. The responsibility to sell our tourism resources is entirely upon Musokotwane and his colleagues, not on hollywood producers. Don’t raise people’s expectations before you have even seen the film script to know what is going to be covered and how it will be pitched. The only positive thing to be expected from this is that hopefully other filmmakers will begin to see zambia as a potential film set for other future film projects

  7. Thanks for that infor ba Ako kanono ba nevers, but what happened to that move ?I mean i have never seen it,though someone tells me that some zambian dudes featured in it,so what happened to the zambian densil washingstones ?

  8. #15Mo taim, actually the first white people to see the musi-oa-tunya where boer chaps from south africa but there visit is not properly documented. dr livingstone should just be credited for changing the falls’ name which we should change back to the vernacular. imagine you going on the 303 in wiltshire and discovering stonehenge and changing its name to litunga stones, the british would think you are crazy. in this case, let us consider dr livingstone as crazy and suffering from delusions from malaria fever.

  9. #16 3RqU I was away yesterday and just came home late this morning. Your guess might be right, I had some :(|) business to take care of in a city very very far from home.;)

  10. #17
We are not saying they are going to advertise Zambia directly. All we are saying is they include something in the film which is going to say something about Zambia. If anything I would rather that than being given money which we know is not going to be accounted for. We`ve senn films which say Los Angeles why not something saying Livingstone Zambia?

Kokolio I hate big time Charlies! Stop being one.

  11. You right on that one ba nevers, probably a tonga or toka leya name is needed ,it is quit amazing how this guys were claimig to discover things when not :d

  12. Showcase Zambia? I doubt
They’ll just show a white guy trying to civilize half naked people.
Remember the Gods must be crazy? I still get whites who think thats the way we live.

  13. I understand David livingstone had a apetite for African women hope this wont be shown i the movie probably with some of his coloured children :d

  14. Mo taim, ultimately it is the lack of will on the part of our government to promote “cultural industries”, always hoping that a foreign investor will come and teach people how to beat drums and employ them. Culture to our government, is the Mutomboko, Kuomboka and N’cwala ceremonies and also kneeling before the president. Even watching touch of the sun, zambia is not mentioned at all. the setting is in a fictitious country with the president named Kamin. Prof Situmbeko Musokotwane is cheating himself about zambia being marketed that way.

  15. Akokanono ba Nevers you are missing the point here. It`s not as if the film will be about Zambia. Just some poster (if we have any) saying say Livingstone 14 miles will be more than enough.

  16. The Toka-Leya name for the Victoria Falls is Shungu Namutitima while the Kololo-Lozi name is Musi-Oa-Tunya or the smoke that thunders.

  17. That is Zallyhood, keep it up.Nine Chale ,jamaco, supergal,Ba maureen,Chewe, 3RqU and Maestro Hhehhehhehhene i prayed for you today at church.

  18. That is Zallyhood, keep it up.Nine Chale ,jamaco, supergal,Ba maureen,Chewe, 3RqU and Maestro Hhehhehhehhene i prayed for you today at church.

  19. #29 3RqU I have watched Touch of the Sun. The only Zambian landmark is Mulungushi Int. Conf. Centre with nothing remotely showing a milestone or whatever. The only other film were Zambia was mentioned by name is “Wild Geese” where the mercenaries are contemplating where to go. One of them says “Let’s go to Zambia” and another one says “It is too far”. May be if the new film will be a documentary, there is chance that a milestone–Livingstone 14 miles will be shown. For Livingstone’s death place, it is in the middle of nowhere and government would have to do a lot to build a road to it.

  20. #25 Mo Taim, are you serious about David Livingstone having had native women & fathered coloured children?
Yaba! In that case the movie should be entitled “From Zambia With Love” .=))

  21. Milingo host a ‘Chiambretti night’
The jealous wife wants to take it away
“No woman naked next to him”
The bishop was excommunicated host of the transmission of Italy 1. Maria Sung has not liked the sensual belly dancing and the performance of the singers in front of the husband. “Shame,” said the presenter and the study is raging the finimondo
Milan, 29 January 2009 – Out of the program in the recording of ‘Chiambretti night’, which hosted Monsignor Emmanuel Milingo. Maria Sung, a woman married in 2001 in a collective marriage, has tried to take away the bishop excommunicated after a dancer has performed a belly dance.

From what has been learned everything went well for the first

  22. #35 Akokanono ba Nevers. Its not about how long the clip takes. It`s not about buildings and the likes. Remember we are on about Hollyhood.

  23. not ukeleta ama southafricans to act mufwile mwalandanabo bwino ba situmbeko. so that mwamficha mulichi muvi nizii sana so that twabalanga ati pa zed bakamba paliba italanta. ni zii

  24. #36 nine chale, though it is not documented but local folks have it that David Livingstone alipele banamayo amafumo sana ,but there was one tonga lady whom he loved above all his women,he called her sweet pie and because of this atleast even my grandmother despite having no teeth is able to say sweet pie :d

  25. They should also show case our shortest man in the world, Chiluba, without his high heels. Chiluba is one of the tourist attractions to Zambia as he is physiologically the shortest Southewrn African man. Even Chanda Beu is at least ten(10) centimeters taller than Chiluba at 97cm tall.

  26. #44 My dear PF cadre which Chanda Beu are you talking about. Is it the great dancer we all know from the Amayenge? If that is the one then I would say, that maths class you used to dodge to go and enjoy the June sun in the name of the teacher is useless would have served you well here. Unfortunately the joke is not on your teacher but on you now. I end my case.

10cm? Oh ok, I get the humour, take my post as humour too. happy bloging

  27. 32. ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT, thanks and keep it up. I really appreciate your input, chief. My regards to your family and take careful care always. Until the next time.

    James 5 + KJV Bible
5:8 Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.
5:9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.

  28. here is the inside scope – location for the movie was amongst Uganda, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia and South Africa. Zambia was the last choice – we just dont have the infrastructure for such a large project. So we had to dance – to be honest they can hire all the GTV, Zambian Airways, Mines unemployed as carriers of the equipment and half naked villagers being whipped by the David & Co. 🙂
They guys behind the movie did “Che: Part Two” and “The Passion of Christ” – the movie is suppose to promote Zambia and christianity. The cast is brilliant…for me its worth the 15% break and whatever the build they leave behind – ie a new industry in Zed (maybe!)

  29. Maybe the film will feature a drunken David livingstone insulting in a local dilect, after some rounds of kachasu and dobo ,with two of his african friends pushing him in a wheelbarrow. :d

  30. #47 3RqU

MMD Chief Bootlicker and Matworld are one and the same person.

Jamaco and Nine Chale are one and the same person. Just checked their IPS numbers.

  31. Refunding 15% on the costs of shooting a movie?Somewhat ridiclous.Zambia to refund hollywood.I thought there was need for environmental issues on sensitising the shooting process.Would u wanna promote tourism then involve the National Geographic society to cover wildlife and traditional ceremonies. It sounds so funny coz about 8 or 9 years ago Angoni short something with the Ngonis of eastern province. That thing would have put Zambia on a map too.The ministry of tourism would have taken advantage of that.Nobody thoughtof refunding Angoni clearance. Why?He is Zambia, unless he was a foreigner.SHAME SHAME SHAME UPON US

  32. David Livingstone: Hello there native fellow, what on earth is that waterfall called?

Native man: Iwe chikamba, ukamba chani?!

David Livingstone: Chikamichani? Bollocks you native twat! I’ll call it Victoria falls!

Native man: Ulibe nzelu, olo uoneka monga nfwiti. Kachasu imanichaya!

David Livingstone: Yes, you’re right. It is a good name….Cheerio chap!

  33. ;));));))Am lost here, is govt saying that if hollywood spends 10 million USD, then they will refund 1,500,000 USD? why do we have to do that???? they have no money to bail out Zambian Airways and the mines but they have the money to refund hollywood????

I hope am wrong otherwise this will be worse than Chiluba’s plunder

  34. There they go again, the first big hype of 2009. Instead of making money, you planning to give them tax break you s*lly fre*ks.

  35. oh this is simply awesome news… first big time production in our beloved country.. we can finally get out there once and for all. I hope it comes to pass….:d

  36. have you noticed how RB spends more time outside the country such that it looks as if he just visits zambia?

  37. #63, you are right, the inferiority complex in zambia runs from our politicians right through to the football players thats why even in football we cant do better than cosafa and to expect our politicians to come good on a country bussines negotiation is as good as expecting snow in zambia in the middle of the october heat! =p~

  38. The only scenery they need is that of the Victoria falls…so bollocks about infrastructure and stuff. How was Zambia/Livingstone during the 1800s? Thats the kind of picture they will need to capture. Anything about David Livingstone tells it will be a history based movie. 😕

  39. #63 + 64 Is it a surprising that the poor man will always be satisfied with less? I think the tendecy you have diagnosed has more to do with poverty than inferiority complex in general.

  40. No.65 … good sense. Unless somebody tells me there’s a twist in the plot and Dr Livingstone is transported to the future to enjoy Mosi with Chuma and Susi at Sun International.

  41. #-21 3RqU: All I was saying is that the excitement with which our well-meaning govt is approaching this foreign project smacks of naivity… Any well-informed person reading that story will feel embarrassed how we can be led by a group that exhibits such gullibility..and that’s supposed to be our Minister of Finance! All he needed is do some bit of research and read the film-script first to understand how hollywood operates before rushing to issue a public statement. Hollywood coming to shoot a movie in Zambia is good for the nascent Zambian film industry, but its absolutely like asking for water from a stone to expect that it is of any benefit to our tourism. I still stand by that!

  42. God Almight, how good to learn Zed will be on the map once again. I wish I had wings to fly, so I could become one of the xtras mwe, even a glimpse will do for me. Hollywood coming to Zambia? Countrymen forget the payment, because you are not see a ngwee of that but you gonna be proud that Hollywood came to us.

I love you my fellow countrymen. :d/:d/

  43. i hate the fair tale about David Livingstone, he was a colonizer and a hypocrite. the grz should rename the Vic falls while we are at it.

  44. # Abena Difiko & Pikiloni, whatever they are called, should apply for guest actors, they may end up visiting Hollyhood. Kuti lwanya.

  45. I heard they will start filming Blood diamond 2: the copper mine and the chocholi very soon? I hear there will be zombie’s in the movie, they can save up make up costs and just use kachasu drinkers that already look half dead.

  46. there has never been a movie made by Hollywood that has painted Africa in a good light. any movie is always in-line with the negative stereotype about Africa. re war lord, blood diamond, Congo, etc, the movie will actually have a negative impact about Zambia. poverty, malaria, etc

  47. Silent witness showed in the UK sometime back featured only SA actors. They showed run down places in SA as Zambia. It was such a shame watching that program that I did not even finish it.Hope things change this time.

  48. #81- I watched silent witness and i was disgusted. They featured S.African actors speaking broken Bemba chasing dirty kids in Soweto and they said it was in lusaka. What a shame.

  49. #31 if you do not know what Musi ou Tunga means in Toka leya, then just keep silent. Actually you have said it the oppposite. Actually those Hollywood guys have already featured chief Mukuni, the senior chief of the Toka Leya people whose ancestral place would be on the movie, for Zambia as a whole. The Victoria falls is a Zambian symbol as people of the Zambezi.

  50. which HOLLYWOOD PRODUCER,tell the country the name of the producer, careful now some of us hollywood is our home, iam not trying to be nagative NO,i know how people in the zambian boma works, they want to eat by hiring cheat people from the street and say he is the top producer,so please tell the country the name of that producer

  51. #83 Its actually #30 who has put the meaning of the falls the other way round. Ask me am the queen of the Toka leyas. All the people in Mukuni village are celebrating.

  52. I hope the location wont be Ngwenya compound, Bakatumweneshamo.Let them make their set somewhere far away from those places or they can even shoot in actual L’stone town center since it still looks the same as it might have been in the 1860’s.

  53. They’re negotiating with Peter Cottan to be Dr Livingstone while Bikiloni and Diffikoti will star as Chuma and Susi.

  54. Just hope there won’t be people in the background throwing up peaces signs and waving! It’s all good, just hope the government don’t play dumb and get screwed money wise. Put that money to good use. Livingstone is a gorgeous place.

  55. (Sorry this topic is not related to the story) Today marks 90 days since this Govt was elected into power. They have finished their 3 months probation and as Zambians we have a right to analyse their performance during this timeframe with all fairness. I have been searching for the MMD campaign manifesto and have not got a hold of it ,infact the website for President Banda is down ,anyhow we should still assess their performance so far.
    Accomplishments
    1) Promised to increase University Students meal allowance – The Meal allowances were increased in the first week of office but have not yet taken effect.
    2) Promised to reduce Mealie Meal prices – This was done after much pressure from

  56. various stakeholders.
    3) Promised to reduce the price of fuel – This was done after pressure from various stakeholders.
I can’t think of any other accomplishments ,bloggers please feel free to add more.
    Weaknesses/Failures
1.Corruption is still rampart in Zambia
    2. Promised to create 4000 jobs which equates to roughly about 111 jobs a month based upon the 3 year period this Govt will be in power. So far the Govt is behind by 333 jobs not being created.
3.Lack of a strategic Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Timebound policy to empower local investors
4.Lack of a strategic SMART policy to restructure the health system.
5.The Fertilizer Support Program is not based on a SMART

  57. strategy as a result it is failing and the inputs are not reaching the intended beneficiaries.
6)Lack of a strategic SMART policy to restructure the education system in Zambia to offer more practical courses that will allow pupils and students to graduate with an enterprising mentality. lack of a policy to build Public Universities in each province.
7)lack of a a strategic SMART Policy to counter the impact of the Economic Global crisis in Zambia.
8)lack of a strategic SMART policy to boost Tourism in Zambia, this policy should have a dependency on many factors which should also be SMARTly implemented such as good road infrastructure throughout Zambia,a deliberate policy on encouraging

  58. 5 star hotels, shopping malls and social amenities to be built throughout Zambia where there are Tourist attractions.
9.Too much dependence on foreign investors to the point that there is no serious screening, vetting and Zambia does not maxmize on financial profits and social responsibility ventures from the said investors.
10)MP’s salaries being increased in the first month of this Govt bein in power even when suce a move was denied during campaign time.
    11) Wasted tax payers money and financial resources in sending Govt officials for medical treatment abroad which is not even part of the annual budget.
12)Too many trips by the President instead of delegating and spending this crucial

  59. time to brainstorm and tackle the problems that Zambia is facing.
13)No strategic SMART plan to ensure that the NCC delivers a constitution that is representative of the Zambian population at minimal cost.
14)No strategic SMART policy to ensure that the civil service including local councils is restructured and produces quality services.
Number 8 should include a strategic SMART policy that encourages multiple Zambian owned airlines to operate local, international including regional and long distance flights.Bloggers feel free to add your analysis. We need to hold accountable every Govt that will ever rule Zambia. Blogging and complaining is the beginning of solutions but we need to go

  60. Guys look at what slumdog millionaire has done for Mumbai – lets think positively. Lets hope Brad Pitt will be Dr Livingstone

  61. I don’t understand. 15 percent of what? All the money they spend. Or all the money they spend in Zambia. I think the govt is overcommiting itself. Why dont we give such incentives to our own people. Our own actors and our local investors?

  62. Hey!!I??ll definitely have to check out Sean??s post. And I love the idea of blogging about a failure and how you learned from it. I??ll have to do that one soon

  63. The actual Bend Bend style is a lot much more luxurious as well as intended for clients that like to end up being because showy within their design since the manufacturer

  64. I think Erika Napoletano is especially spectacular at pulling this off. She??ll talk about some awesome/shitty/outrageous that happened to her or someone she knows and leads with what happened and then shows you what you can learn from it.

  65. Great post kim,I am just getting my new blog up and running and I have been thinking about all the things I could write about. You have just increased that list 10 fold with your very clear advice.I owe you a Starbucks coffee for that block post. LOL. Thanks a million.
