The Medical Council of Zambia (MCZ) says a large number of medical practitioners and institutions are operating illegally.

MCZ Registrar Mary Zulu said, during a media briefing, that the council is not impressed that a large number of Health practitioners throughout the country have not come forward to renew their practicing licenses.

Dr. Zulu noted that only 34 percent of the health practitioners in Zambia are registered with the council. Out of a total of 8,770 health practitioners only 2,948 have renewed their practicing licenses.

She further said non renewal of certificate licenses is against the Medical and Allied professions Act, chapter 297 of the laws of Zambia and that the Medical Council Act also demands that health institutions in the country be registered with the MCZ annually.

Dr. Zulu warned that MCZ would de-register all health practitioners and institutions that have not renewed their licences. She appealed to some of the health practitioners running health facilities under the MCZ to ensure that they update their licenses allowing them to provide health services.

  1. MCZ Registrar Mary Zulu , I urge you to be proactive and swing into action instead of issuing ‘toothless’ warnings from your desk. People are losing lives due to wrong prescriptions being issued out there. Visit all the practising surgeries and check them out.
    GET MOVING NOW!!!!

  2. Too many quacks aiming for the big buck… Just arrest them all if identified!!!!

MCZ, what happened to your regisrty? .. No one should practice without registration and they should display their practice certificate in their premises at all times!!

  3. Is this the Mary Zulu who taught 3rd year biochemistry? After the hard time you, Munalula et al gave us at ridgeway, you still want to haunt our dreams.Let us practice in peace. Its so hectic renewing licences.Perhaps you should give us 5year licences so its not a freaking annual event.

  4. MZ Firstly sort out the congolese and chinese with scant knowledge of medicine that you often allow to in the country and practice medicine ,not the locals that you trained and very well knowledge their calibre.

  5. wiseman-reborn,don’t you ever say that about Congolese bcz i know most if not all Congolese are good medical practitioners

  6. #10 Kirikou,My posting was not meant to demean the Congolese nor the Chinese, far from it., but rather the process of screening the foreign doctors based on;
    1. language proficient
    2. Genuiness of their papers
    3. Length of practice before confirmed as consultants

I have personally worked with the best and the worst of them and I mean well for Zambia. E.g mistaking a traumatised eye (trauma) in theatre for tumour of the eye……many more examples purely based on language

  7. A lot of doctors never bothered to have renewal of their licenses for obvious reasons , top on the list the disorganisation at MCZ ,the credit point system was not in place . It was basically for a long time headed by old clinical officer whose knowledge of medicine was rusty .it was not until last year that Dr MZ was sent there. Things are moving now only at times she is over zealous and vindictive.

  8. You are all missing the POINT except from #1 Mwe Bantu . The issue is, WHY SHOULD WE CARE IF THE MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS HAVE NOT RENEWED their practicing licences? Unqualified, incompetent quarks and the like will join the sensitive industry! Lives of many will many will be at risk. Period! This is also what the reporter should have brought forward. Similarly, 2-5 years licences should understand that we can not risk life for that long. If practitioners are not renewing in one year, what will compel them after 5yrs. This is not a Business venture like mining where you ask for tax rebates please!!!!! Unscrupulous people will actually run away in the 4th year to avoid penalties committed prior to expiring of license.
renew your license or hang up!

  9. Kirikou not all the congolese and chinese docs are bad but you might also agree that most of the illegal ones come from this group.I can’t think of a Zambian fake doctor setting up a practice in any of the two countries? But why do these people have even a nerve to practice in our country illegally?

  10. #14 Observer understand this point , lives are very important but then how do we verify that the guy given practicing license two yrs ago is still as good a doc? systems aught to be put in place such as continued medical education (CME) there are so many ways of doing this, which in a way has not been strengthened in Zambia such as mandatory membership to ZMA which has the capacity to institute CME etc …… .

  11. #15 Hola i can name you more……. non qualified Zambians doctors. But you are quick pointing fingers at Congolese, i do not know why you hate them so much. One thing i know for sure is Zed people in Congo walk free and do what they want either illegal or legal. Please give them a break they deserve

  12. Dr.Zulu your organization is disorganized and needs to be shut down, If I was your leader President I would fire you and hire someone who can do the job.The problem is the not the Medical Doctors and the the health Institutions the problem is you, Shame on you.Zambia is in a bad shape because of the people like you empty heads. Please do your job not just talking blah blah blah!!!

  13. Frankly the process of renewals is a bloody hectic one, I mean why should one have to travel all the way to lusaka to the damn thing done, simplify things for everyone..and one more thing get get your act together and sort out your forever not working web page and put the damn forms on ine for everyone to download.
