Condom shorage hits Mazabuka

Share

A critical shortage of condoms has hit Mazabuka district forcing discondent couples to petition the Total Control of Epidemic (TCE), a nongovernmental organization championing the cause of HIV/AIDs to seek government intervention.

Mazabuka district hospital, TCE and other government medical institutions have been operating without condoms for over a month now because medical stores which supplies condoms has not done so since December 2010.

Mazabuka district HIV/AIDs taskforce vice chairperson, Jabes Kanyanda said during a DATF meeting he chaired at TCE offices that the shortage of condoms was not only a source of worry to married couples but to his organization, TCE which is actively involved in HIV/AIDs tests, enrolment of HIV positive on Anti-retroviral therapy and HIV/AIDs educational campaigns.

Mr. Kanyanda explained during a meeting that some married couples have complained to his office of being sexually starved as a result of the shortage of condoms.

He said his organisation TCE, is now in a quandary because it cannot provide answers to its clients due to lack of feed from the ministry of health.

TCE receives condoms from the ministry of health.

Society for family health, an NGO which has been instrumental in the distribution of condoms is reported to have donated a small quantity of condoms to TCE to help address the shortage.

Meanwhile, health workers at Mazabuka district hospital have called on the minister of health to overturn a decision by the district health management team not to allow staff going to see the district medical officer in the absence of a referral letter.

Staff talked too complained that the restrictions are a threat to the delivery of health care to the community because sometimes quick decisions are required to save lives instead of following protocal as though they are in a military wing.

They warned that they would be forced to demonstrate if the minister of health does not intervene.

A medical doctor confirmed the development but said he will not succumb to the directives by the district medical officer Dr. Namakau Siyumbwa who by press time was not available for a comment.

Health workers at all levels have been ordered to seek permission to their supervisors before they can speak to the medical officer.

The health workers have also asked the district medical officer to visit the hospital and acquaint herself with the challenges the staff are going through and also attend to patients in the wards.

  1. Why should shorage (whatever it is) of condoms be a source of worry? Kufilekafye fye capwa-best solution. starvation?

  2. Statistics show that not a lot of tongas are infected with this Bemba killer called HIV. I am sure the reason for not sending a lot of condoms. But please GRZ send so condoms to this area because we have Bembas too living in this area.

  3. Statistics show that Tongas are slow to adapt to new things i.e new technologies, news codes of dress and conduct, new behaviours e.t.c whereas other tribes (especially Northern and Eastern Province tribes) are quick to adapt and try out news things. They are further ready to take risks. The contributing factor is that most Tongas are rural based while easterners and northerners are urban tribes. Because of their willingness to take risks and adapt to new styles, easterners and northerners are econoically better while Tongas lag behind. On the social front, its the northerners and easterners who lead in poor dress for women and girls, and also in thuggery because of their risk taking and adaptation attributes. For their part, Tonga women and girls are still dressing like its 1964.

  4. With regard to HIV/AIDS, this is a national problems. Although poor dress, poor manners and risk taking among northern and eatern girls may be contributing to the spread of AIDS, Tongas too have their own shortcomings. Whereas a Northerner would rather talk his tongue out to his lover (these people are talkative) a Tonga Bull would rather screw before talking is done. Its to a Tonga Bull a waste of time to talk before s.e.x be it in a bedroom or under a tree. Add this problem to their poligamy nature…… Tongas cant claim to be better equipped to fight AIDS above other tribes.

  5. So what does this mean? That people are having a lot of sex in mazubaka and hence the shortage or the town is under supplied?lol

  6. # 7 it show how foolish you are Mazabuka is an industrious town third of the tribe in this town are Kimasholi bemba, when we discussing issues let focus on the topic don`t be tribal there is no single tribe superior than the other in Zambia, don`t cheat yourself.

  10. When i was reading the article, tribe didnt even cross my mind. And then i saw comment #6. Why do you Tonga like bringing tribe particularly Bemba in your arguments? to provoke Bembas like #7? for what? Is it our fault that you are the most hated tribe in Zambia? is it our fault Zambia has never had a Tonga president? is that what this is about?
Hatred kills and after that takes you to hell!
You think with such attitudes people would dare vote for a Tonga?
    ICINDIKENI!MAFI YENU

  11. No.28 tunamatacall

I think No.7 is one of you. You cant even see that he is shooting Tongas cause its rooted in you mind to be against Tongas. Read his comment carefully or better ask him. He is one of you Kaponyas!!!

  12. #29 What makes you think im also shooting #7. Of course i know #7 is one of us thats why i wrote ‘ provoke bembas like #7’ by writing that im citing a bemba who has been provoked Are you ok in your bongo bongo?

Just because kaponyas speak alot of bembas doesnt mean they are bemba. they use bemba because its widely spoke and understood by many people.Do many non-Tongas speak and understand Tonga?

  13. YOU HAVE MADE ME LAUGH,ANYWAY THERE IS NOTHING TRIBAL ABOUT CONDOMS.THE MATTER SOUNDS SERIOUS ACCORDING TO LT.PLEASE DO SOMETHING

  14. This tribalism is stupid. The smart thing to do when someone starts talking about one tribe being worse than another is point out the stupidity of his argument, not bring yourself to his level and talk smack about his tribe. #17, if one or both spouses in a marriage have HIV, or the wife is not ready to be pregnant at that time, they need condoms if they want to continue having sex.
