Alternate Executive Director of the Africa Group One Constituency at the World Bank, Dr. Denny Kalyalya has implored the Zambian government to take full advantage of the current warm relations and the numerous opportunities the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) offer to advance the cause of development for Zambia.

This is contained in a statement made available to Lusakatimes by Ben Kangwa Press secretary for the Zambian Embassy Washington DC.

Dr. Kalyalya said the World Bank Group and IMF see a lot of potential in Zambia and that engagements with the two Institutions now was of advantage to Zambia’s economic development.

He said, ”The two Institutions see a lot of potential in Zambia and the important role in the global context the country can play in fighting poverty.”

Dr. Kalyalya noted that the recent visits to Zambia by the IMF Managing Director Mr. Dominique Strauss Khan and that of the World Bank Group President Mr. Robert Zoelick in March and December last year respectively were indications of positive economic progress in Zambia.

Other indicators were the establishment of the country office by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the appointment of a Country Director for Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe stationed in Zambia.

“ It is therefore incumbent upon Zambia and Zambians to step up to the plate and explore various options through the Country Assistance Strategies (CASs) and other mechanisms of effectively engaging with the Bretton Woods Institutions (BWIS) for the betterment of mother Zambia,” he added.

Dr. Kalyalya was speaking at a luncheon hosted at the Zambia Embassy in Washington DC to mark the end of the Minister of Finance and National Planning Dr. Situbeko Musokotwane and his delegation’s attendance of the 2011 IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings.

Earlier, Dr Musokotwane told his audience which included Zambians working at the IMF and World Bank that the 2011 IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings were a success.

He said he was pleased to note that Zambia was attracting a lot of positive attention within the IMF, World Bank Group and the African Development Bank .

The Minister said the Bretton Wood Institutions were interested in understanding Zambia’s economic priorities. Crucial infrastructure and developmental needs of Zambia and how the various institutions could collaborate with the government were discussed at length during these meetings.

Dr. Musokotwane was particularly happy with the discussions on the way forward regarding the funding of a railway line to connect Zambia to the Port of Lobito in Angola, which he said was “critical” for Zambia’s imports and exports

He stated the willingness by the African Development Bank (ADB) on projects such as the Kazungula Bridge – a joint project between Zambia and Botswana across the Zambezi River that is intended to link Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) through Botswana and South Africa.

  1. These monies are all wako- ni- wako in Zambia. So many NGO’S time memorial but poverty levels still remain the same if not getting worse… koma na dabwa mwee….

  2. Good. Once in a while, we take a breath of fresh air from the low-calibre political jungle we live in daily.

  3. this article will definetly get few comments from PF cadres bcoz there is no election or state house mentioned.just obsev.

That aside.its is very vital for the zambian organisations to engage the govermnt and tap into these opportunities.pipo need to knw wat opportunities are there in the Country Assistance Strategies and inquire how they can get involved.let us not shun govt programmes meant to empower us just bcoz we dont like who is ruling, such an attitude doesnt help at all apart from confining you to perpetual poverty.

    • I thought that it is the role of government to articulate the opportunities available to its citizens; as a deliberate way to empower the citizens to participate in, and cotribute towards economic independence. If the government is not able to articulate the opportunities, then it follows that the government is not working in the interests of the people. The citizens should not be expected to go to the government to ask what all the international agreements mean for the man in the street, rather it should be the other way round.

  4. i was waiting to hear from most of you useless cadres to comment on this one, but it seem it is non of your business unless it was MMD that, Kunda says that, Shikapono says that, HH says that.

It is now good to hear from Danny about Zambia tell them Dr.

  5. @ Shimaini, wit all due respect, wat value does yo comment add to this discussion? can you discuss constructively so that those care to read to get something. give us yo view on the article

  6. Hi what good news…
A government which is working. Its great to see the Zambians (Dr’s) talking at the highest level. We as a nation can now be counted among nations of the world and not just another African country.
Well done we are getting there…

  7. These Zambian Dr’s at World bank, IMF and BoZ just waste there time talking. Unlike there Kenyan or Tanzanian counterparts who have used their international exposure and contacts to establish own firms of international repute in Agriculture, Pharmacy, Distribution and the like, they are all content with the salaries and loans instead of profits from own firms. They do not inspire anyone. Lets hear from the few self made business Zambian moguls like the owners of the now multinational Zambeef corporation. They are a true reflection of what a Zambian can achieve within the same ‘poor’ environment we are living…not these ‘too aloof to get hands dirty’ economists from the old school. The spur for development and creation of wealth world over has been business enterprise not…

    • im inspired by people like you and comments like this, i am a dreamer myself looking for an opportunity to materialise and realise my plans. cheers boss!

  8. The Docs should help GRZ secure loans from the world bank for very specific wealth creating activities, e.g. making the roads from Livingstone to Konkola, to Mwinilunga, to Kasumbalesa, across pedical, to Nakonde and the like dual or even trible lanes so as to speed up movement of goods and people in a safe manner, promoting access to markets in areas covered by these routes… or modernizing the rail system? Or why not pipe water from the fresh water lakes in the North to the agricultural areas in the South? These are loans that will in the long run pay for themselves as they end up creating wealth for the country, broadening a tax base for GRZ and etc…not sinking a Borehole! Besides IMF/Worldbank shall not liquidate GRZ if the loans are well spent. Just thinking….

  9. Zambians see working at the World Bank or IMF as a big thing. Why dont our highly educated people think of inventions or setting up companies. All that happens at the world bank / IMF is writing reports. These people spend yeras writing reports and yet will never spare some time to write a book. I guess Dr. Kalyalya will return to Zambia tired. Good luck to him any way!
