Illegal fishing methods rife in Chiengi

Some fishermen in Chiengi District, Luapula Province, are reported to be highly engaged in illegal fishing methods.

The fishermen are said to be using mosquito nets on Lake Mweru.

And Luapula Province Minister, Besa Chimbaka has since described the vice as unfortunate saying the mosquito nets are instead distributed for the anti-malaria crusade.

Mr. Chimbaka has warned of serious consequences against all the perpetrators of the vice.

  1. I am sure this has the blessing of the area chief. The chap who want Katele to be ‘freed’ from his corruption cases in court. As far as he knows corruption, theft are all normal activities.

  2. It’s very common in most areas People do use mosquitoe nets to catch fish. I saw somewhere in Katete when i went visiting.

    • This problem surely needs sorting out, if not our waters will eventually remain without this essential species. This is for sure as per saying ” If one needs a fish teach him how to fish”

      Choma.

  3. How will the Zambia water police enforce this?….In a dug out canoe.

  4. people are using mosquito nets because they want to create a resource for ilvelihood.Provide an option of aquaculture and see if the vice continues.Enforcement should also be well managed in the area and should not be segregative

  5. Actually the fish is massively depleted in Lake Mweru and in most of the other Luapula water bodies. In Luapula Province fishermen are more likely to catch Aids than Fish. I would advise the chiefs in Luapula to go and consult my cousins at the BRE in Barotseland on how best to manage their fisheries. The people in Luapula should understand that the fishing ban is there for a reason together with the regulation of the fishing methods. Unfortunately for my fellow Zambians in Luapula they equate following the law with ‘ukushishita’.

  6. It’s true fish is massively depleted in Luapula water bodies, the questions to address are the causative factors.Let’s us deal with these factors befor we can even begin to combat the indiscriminate killing of fish.We need a good alternative policy to offset this.Let authorities create other avenues for people to survive, for example arable agriculture which has assisted to lessen effort on these waters.Let’s also create industry where people can work. The traditional leadership should also respect pieces of legslation in place regarding fish conservation.

  7. It’s really a nice and helpful piece of information. I’m satisfied that you shared this helpful info with us. Please keep us up to date like this. Thank you for sharing.

  8. Undeniably believe that which you said. Your favorite reason appeared to be at the net the easiest thing to remember of. I say to you, I definitely get irked even as folks think about concerns that they plainly don’t understand about. You controlled to hit the nail upon the top and also outlined out the whole thing with no need side-effects , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thank you
