“Don’t Kubeba”- a contradiction to the prevention and fight against corruption

By L.Temfwe

The PF knew the MMD had considerable financial resources they could use to entice Zambians to vote for them. The MMD knew that high poverty levels creates great vulnerability, and that many Zambians would be sympathetic to and even vote for MMD if they received gifts. The MMD also knew that no one would ask about the source of funds. The strategy was clear: the more gifts we give now; the more votes we get on Election Day. This was not a secret strategy. I overheard one man say “that province could be won with rock buns and beer,” to which his friend replied “it would only take the rock buns”.

[pullquote]Do you say “Don’t Kubeba” during the election and then “Do Kubeba” if you win the election?[/pullquote]
The PF knew that telling Zambians, “accepting money or gifts from government officials during elections is breaking the law” would fall on deaf ears. Instead they chose the adage “if you can’t beat them join them,” and “Don’t Kubeba” was born! The “Don’t Kubeba”, or “Don’t Tell” campaign strategy was: “accept money from government officials, just don’t tell them you won’t vote for them.” This proved to be a very shrewd and effective strategy. On the Copperbelt, people thronged to MMD political meetings to get money, chitenge clothing and t-shirts.

‘Don’t Kubeba’ certainly contributed to the PF win. Nonetheless, many serious minded Christians had a lot of questions about the slogan. How should Christians respond to a slogan that encourages corruption? How can Christians make a difference in politics when one party encourages taking bribes and another party uses dishonest means to gain power? With the PF government talking tough against corruption it would seem good for them to categorically denounce the “Don’t Kubeba” slogan. “Don’t Kubeba” is a contradiction to the prevention and fight against corruption.

One way Christians can contribute to the transformation of society is by getting involved in politics to fight corruption and injustice and by providing good governance. But, outside of the New Jerusalem, Christian politicians will face many challenges. Challenges like “Don’t Kubeba”. On the surface it may appear that the PF has plainly encouraged corruption. But, how do you face a process that is characterized by intrigue, political maneuvering and deceit? What do you do when those responsible for conducting elections may be coerced into supporting the ruling party by falsifying figures in favor of preferred candidates?

The easy answer is – obey God. But what does obedience look like when the system is unjust? Do you say “Don’t Kubeba” during the election and then “Do Kubeba” if you win the election? Or is obedience your only hope no matter what? We have testimonies in the lives of people like Joseph and Daniel who remained obedient to God and in the end God vindicated and elevated them to the highest leadership positions.

How are you helping church members in politics show allegiance to God? Are you telling Christian politicians that they cannot be effective in anything until he or she learns to obey God no matter the consequences?

  1. Don’t Kubeba is corrupt and evil. As you have seen the many u-turns and mistakes as well as bizarre deaths and accidents plus a President in hiding!!!

  2. Fully agreed. I’ve always maintained that this whole Donchi Kubeba philosophy is one standing on a very weak moral foundation and is based on lies and deceit which actually encourages corruption of the heart and mind. I cannot believe that more than a million Zambians sang this song election time openly and saw absolutely nothing wrong with it – including the so called men of God, men wishing for a corrupt free Zambia, men with doctorates. Says a lot about a country’s moral fabric…

  3. Whichever way u look at it, sure fact is it is derived from cults secret satanist societies where secrecy, anonymity, back stabbing, are virtue. Donchi means u r wicked and crooked and on the run or deceitful e.g. Don’t kubeba that am laying his wife or stealing pantu kuti banjipaya or that am sick kuti banseka.,

  4. Its too little too late. In my language which i know you tongas dont like but I am proud being bemba we say Bansensela ilyo kawa. Sata is now in state house. Just give him time to deliver.

    • Iwe, what part of 90 days from being elected is not clear to you? I asked the question of what the PF gvt would do once voted in the only answer I got was dont kubebe no nzelu zili pati?? a question that that very carder should have been asking. But the excitement was just too much for them…

  5. Spot On! As a true Christian, one can not support this Don’t whatever. A Christian does not go with the wind….. Even if it’s the wind of change. A christian goes with God’s guidance.

    Thanks.

  6. It is like the don’t kubeba slogan has not gone down well to the loosing parties. However we all know that a ballot is a secret one and as the writer conceded that MMD was ready to corrupt any vulnerable poor Zambian to remain in power which off course was possible. How do u then defeatt them to serve our great Nation from being ruined by a corrupt regime? The answer is simple, get the items but know who you will vote for so it was simply don’t kubeba.

  7. Reverend Temfwe thanks for this….However, DONCHI KUBEBA was a campaign strategy and not a way of life. In the last elections CHANGE was a huge deciding factor. The slogan mwe bantu is not a philosophy like Humanism was, neither is it a way of life that the PF government is perpetrating. If you look back to the campaign period it is actually the MMD that was corrupting our people and breaching the electoral code with impunity and all the PF was saying is keep it a secret on who you are going to vote for even if you receive what you are given…Reason: Because it is a secret ballot!. The MMD targeted the vulnerable and the not so enlightened to dish out the gifts and not you and me. Right now we should be focusing on providing checks and balances to the PF and tell them : DONCHI KUBEPA!

  8. So if Jesus a WARRIOR dies as a lamb, is that Don’t Kubeba too? If He knows that He will resurrect but still dies, is that Don’t Kubeba too?

The PF knew they would fight corruption, just like Jesus knew He would rise from the dead. But they had to APPEAR to encourage corruption because that was the only language the electorate understood. Jesus had to APPEAR to die (according to Him, it was not death but sleep just like Lazarous’ death) because that was the language people understood.

So Don’t Kubeba does not encourage corruption; it discourages corruption by FRUSTRATING the aims of those who corrupt others. It is evident the MMD lost, which means their corruption failed. Meaning, a precedent has been set: CORRUPTION WILL NO LONGER WIN YOU AN ELECTION. Thanks to don’t kubeba

    • You got it all wrong , Jesus unlike the PF did not use wrong to make people understand , besides he did mention about dying and rising on the 3 rd day using parables , please lets not bring in issues we don’t quite understand just to prove your point , Telling a lie like this is misleading people and you know what the bible says about misleading his people . Shame on you…

  9. nomba apa kubeba no more ifya donchi kubeba if we continue with it then who r we not telling n why not telling what is happning?

  10. Temfwe yakunyokola insala mambala iwe. You must have been one of those fake Pastors who were going to State House. Wanya!

What did you expect people to do? Say no to Injinga?

  11. Donchi Kubeba was for elections. It`s noiw gone. Infact it will come back in 2016 when MMD will be distributing injinga again-NOT (they have no money).

  12. Si iwe Temfwe why didn`t you speak when MMD was busy dressing ifimuti with ifitenge? You are a coward iwe. Niwe Petulo iwe!

  13. The releasing of this article reveals intellectual bankruptsy by the author and the publishers. Donchi kubeba is very simply secret ballot or the right of the voter to the privacy of which direction his or her vote goes. It is a fundamental principle of democracy. It has nothing to do with corruption. Fu+cking ignorant idi+ots. If you want to oppose PF, use a bit of your brain, not your behind imbe=ciles.

  14. The symbol behind the slogan is satanic,it is used in the occult world, the catholic jesults made sata president and they wil also remove him, they made hitler, musolin, mabutu seseseko (and killed patrice lumumba),the jesuits are behind the sinking of the titanic, the global crunch etc.

  15. Imwe baTemfwe. You are embarrassing us with your ignorance chi colour.

I don’t know where this f0ol Temfwe went to school if at all. In any country where they vote, the content of that vote is sacred and private. This is not peculiar to Zambia. The PF just repackaged it. Even children in grade 3 learn this simple civics. Go back to night school and start from nursery again.

  16. Ok there is a point in your article but the slogan has nothing to do with your suspicions.
Again if we look at it clearly it was a way of fighting corruption cause tho the MMD tried to corrupt pipo there corrupt intentions didnt work, if pipo try to corrupt any body they will be scared it will be dont kubeba at work (plans wont work).
Futi it was very important to speak the language that each & every one of us understoood, the dont was just for campagns chapwa.

  17. It is pathetic by the author to suggest that PF’s slogan is corrupt and so forth. Let us be honest when we want to give facts and educate the public. The MMD was corrupt and they would do anything to bribe the electorate. Nobody would have stopped them, the people languished in poverty and they would simply vote for the MMD party because they have been given something. The people needed to alerted and that is what PF did, if they come to give you gifts to vote for them, get and do not vote for them so that they know that you cannot be bought and so is your vote. The slogan was intended simply to discourage the MMD to buy off people to vote them, someone had to educate the public about this vice. PF did not encourage corruption at all. MMD initiated and perpetuated it! Don’t Kubepa!

  18. Weekly, you are spot on.I have read a lot of comments from people saying it encourages corruption. This has nothing to do with corruption or secret ballot.Sata knows exactly what it is especially in the Jesuit circles.I remember encouraging people to get DVDs from the Seventh Day which clearly explains these things. We have seen Sata all over the place kissing religious Leaders, especially the Catholic Priests and just recently, the Muslims. These things are clearly exposed by the Seventh Day in their Teachings and anyone who cares to know should get Videos,i am sure you will know where the country is going.

  19. WHAT IS MR. LAWRENCE TEMFWE SAYING? I CAN’T GET THE LOGIC. PLEASE, TELL US WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY! OTHERWISE, KEEP YOUR REDUNDANT THOUGHTS TO YOURSELF. I AM EVEN MORE EMBARRASSED TO HAVE YOU AS MY FRIEND! YOUR THINKING IS SO WRONG. DID YOU HAVE A NIGHTMARE?

  20. One of the true tests of leadership is the ability to recognize a problem before it becomes DONCHI KUDABWA. (Donchi kubeba=Act of corruption) will forever be used in different departments in the PF govt, and to the public, this may result to a possibility of corruption in the PF system and Sata may try to fight corruption but other people who really misconstrue the use the term “DONCHI KUBEBA” will be difficult to stop. I voted for PF but I never liked the term and I still don’t.

LT not only xtians should condemn it but also Muslims the last time I checked the population statistics, the estimate of the muslim population in 2010 was 13,250,215.00.right now 1/3 of them are PF supporters.

  21. Hey guys get a life. Dont Kubeba was a very good strategy and I had a lot of fan. It seems the author of this message(or the complainant) has a beef with it or is it that they have nothing to do? GET A LIFE AND DONT TELL US. DONT KUTWEBA

  22. Koffi, you wait, that slogan will work against Sata come next election.Wha has he delivered so far, make two steps foreward and three steps backwards, Xavier Chungu what a delivery?

  23. Weekly. Your superstitious mind together with that of your ba Muchapi mentors that pose as Evangelists and Pastors is what is burdening you and your church. Right now nobody can own a car or drink a coke without being labeled a Satanist in Southern Province where you come from. Doctors, teachers, nurses and other hard working professionals are being defarmed daily just to fulfil the jelous and envious egos of your semi-illiterate Evangelists. Your Church leaders are at the helm of promoting primitivity based on petty jelousy. Its time you guys awned to the fact that we are in a modern World and stop pulling down everyone to your level of primitivity. Do not bear false witness- is a biblical Commandment. Where in the bible did Jesus call others Satanists or witches?.

  24. God’s ways are higher than man’s ways. To the Lord, a wrong is a wrong. Eternally. Period. To man, what is wrong to do today can become a alright to do tomorrow. Could be due to moral decline, expediency, love of money, pressure, fear for life, or all kinds of corruption.

To God, there’s not debate, only absolutes. But not so with man. That’s why people about homosexuality, abortions, euthenasia, etc. When people call righ wrong and wrong right, you will forever be arguing.

  25. Surely the ones who were corrupt was MMD in this CASE! This analysis is just childish. Now this author if he works – part of his money will go to pay the lawyers who represented ZNBC in the Chanda Chimba trial…! PF are doing ok – remember they have just been in power barely a month. Be patient! If you are corrupt – just begin changing this land will be difficult for the corrupt!

  26. This is what happens when you steal ideas or titles from people you really don’t understand. DONCHI is a slang people used up to 20 years ago to call someone a ‘boss’ – derived from don and chi…a swear word Zambians use lightly. Kubeba – tell them which as Zambias know can also mean to ‘don’t tell’ or actually ‘boss tell them’. There was also a film made derived from the fact that the actor could not say don’t. Those who know the REAL Dochi Kubeba know what and WHO it refers to and if this Government does not deliver to it’s people – they’ll see with their eyes.

  27. dont kubeba is not corruption . let us compare or drug this matter to cheat pipo . it was just a good campaign strategy which really worked well and we shall use in the next elections . u can not cheat pipo with vote buying the way we saw frm MMD . LETS ACCEPT THINGS WERE NOT OK WITH MMD DISHING OUT MONEIES ANY HOW EVEN LITTLE ONES NEW IT , THIS TIME AROUND KUBEBA . GOD KNOWS WHY SATA HAS BEEN GIVEN TIME TO B AT PLOT 1 . I WISH HIM GODZ GUIDANCE FOR SURE WE EXPECT ALOT FROM HIS GOVT , ONLY A FOOL WILL TRY TO CRITISE EVELY SENSIBLE POLICIES

  28. Wait and see, we shall even Miss Bwezani, this man so called cobra and his minions have a lot of vonom, which is so dangerous to the Zambian society. Lets wait and see.

  29. Those who are still dwelling on donchi kubeba are lost souls. These is ruling time and not campaigning time. It’s time for donchi kudabwa. Wake up and smell the toilet kanunka!!

  30. Dollar70 on the web or. Dollar150 at my community athletics look. I would not pay the full price because of these, but also for Dollar70, I’m thrilled. Pointed looking supports, as well as the contact lenses are perfect.
