UNHCR joins Africa Cup Victory celebration with donation to Lewanika General Hospital

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) in Zambia has officially handed over assorted goods to the Children and Female Wards at Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu.
The refugee community in Western Province prompted UNHCR to make the donation of assorted food and non food items to patients at the two wards in response to the recent African Cup victory by the Zambian Soccer team, the Chipolopolo.

The food and non food items were handed over today by the UNHCR Representative, Ms. Joyce Mends-Cole, to Lewanika General Hospital Superintendent, who officiated at the ceremony on behalf of the Government in Mongu, Western Province.

During the hand-over ceremony, Ms. Mends-Cole expressed UNHCR’s joy at the Africa Cup win and emphasized the fact that UNHCR is not a development agency, but tries to assist the local communities in refugee impacted areas, within its limited resources.

The UNHCR Representative expressed her gratitude to the people of Zambia in general and Western Province in particular for their hospitality and support to refugees over the years.
She also said the gesture was to express UNHCR’s appreciation to the people of Western Province and the Government of Zambia for the warm welcome and co-existence which continues to be accorded refugees.

“We thought it important to contribute to this institution – Lewanika General Hospital – which provides medical services to both the host community and the refugees.”

Lewanika General Hospital has over the years worked with UNHCR with regard to refugee patients referred to the institution from the Mayukwayukwa Refugee settlement.

Refugees are regularly referred from the Ministry of Health run clinics within the refugee settlement and are admitted to Lewanika General Hospital, where they are provided with the same health care as any other patient,” said Ms. Mends-Cole.

“We would like to thank the Lewanika General Hospital management for their continued co-operation with my office and the refugees. As issues of children and women are very close to our hearts, we chose to make this humble donation at these two wards for children and female patients to put a smile on their faces” said the UNHCR Representative.

The hand-over ceremony was witnessed by several UNHCR and hospital staff based in Mongu.

After the donation, the UNHCR Representative paid a courtesy call on the King of the Lozi, the Litunga, at the Limulunga Palace in Mongu.

  1. Thanks to the refugee community in Western Province.

You are selfless, and self-giving. In your needy living conditions, you have thought about the needs of other people.

Is not this the true spirit of the Easter period that we are about to enter? While in great pain and need on the cross, Jesus Christ gave care, reconciliation, forgiveness, and assurance.

    Well done indeed!
