The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has urged government to deploy labor inspectors to ensure that employers comply with the statutory instrument on the revised minimum wages. ZCTU general secretary Roy Mwaba said that since government has already made the decision to revise the minimum wages, it should be ensured that it is enforced for it to have impact on citizens.

Mr. Mwaba said that whether employers are going to manage with the new wages or not, it is not the issue of the union but all what the union is happy about is that the vulnerable will now have more money in their pockets.

Speaking to QFM, Mr. Mwaba said that whatever is being done in the country should always be ensured that it is done for the benefit of the people of Zambia.

On Wednesday last week, Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda announced the revised minimum wages and revised condition of employment act for various categories of workers following the amendment of statutory instrument order 2011 no 1 of 2011, order 2011 no 2 of 2011 and order no 3 of 2011.

The revision implies that wages for various categories have been revised upwards with domestic workers’ wages increased from K250, 000 to K522, 400 with transport allowance inclusive.

And Mr. Shamenda said the revised minimum wage is now a piece of legislation which must be complied with by all employers in the country.

  1. This Roy Mwaba guy he wears the same shirt everyday wats up with that? and is he now insupport of revised minimum wage he objected the other day?

  2. Very soon will see a lot of people out of employment and Shamenda must be ready to give them employment.

  3. Roy Mwaba how much do u get as salary ? don’t just talk , look 4 other people they also want to benefits like you. after the announcement you were against it and u are still ,it shows that you are not still happy with it.but remember anywhere worldwide, then government does that people are always against it and after they agree with it,companies are making a lot of money in our beloved country, on top of that we work for them, they get our minerals and we remain nothing no man we also want to benefit from our minerals given by GOD.come to china and see how chine is developed and us with full of copper we don’t have anything aaaaa, guys lets be serious ka.lets the pf put things in place

  4. This guy has no clue on how to run a trade union. He just rants whatever comes to his mind. It was just yesterday he was shooting Gonvt but now he supports the increament. What a trade unionist….nowander Govnt went it alone. This Mwaba and friends in workers unions are a let down.

  5. # 2 what job losses guy? Are you in Zambia or in another country? No that no job will be lost due to the fact that the $50 per month given to Zambian is so little of which the employers know about. Even the $100 per month now is nothing man. No employer will complain sir. Ask me who live in Zambia, no job will be lost.

  6. Mr Mwaba, you must send inspectors yourself to help Government implement the minimum wage if at all you care about the workers you represent, weather they belong to your union or not.

The workers contribute a lot of money to your union but get literally nothing from you, you have let them down and this is a fact. The other day you complained and today you are sounding like you are on workers side.

This complaint of minimum wage dates back 10-15 years ago show us what you did about it? in fact shut up! let PF WORK

  7. # 2 I agree with you. The ones calling you dull are themselves extremely dull. Its not just the maids we are looking at but shop workers too. Do you seriously think shop owners will pay all those workers 1.2 m per month? Just go to shoprite and count the number of workers there and do the maths. This also affects shops in compounds including those in markets. This shud have been adequately discussed but then we know how certain political parties hate planning and consultations

    • So what do you think Shoprite will do, sack their workers? Who will do the work then? Do you think Shoprite currently employs people it doesn’t need so those are the ones who will be sacked? Think about it

  8. This is another CNP move. When will this drama ever end? Dont get me wrong, iam not against any slave wages especially in my be loved Zed. But forcing employers to pay a minimum wage in a country with 97% un employment rate is ridiculous. Numbers dont lie, Zambia with a population of 12m has only 400,000 in formal employment. Create jobs first, then talk about minimum wage. I feel sorry for the vulnerable that will be impacted by this CNP move.

  9. # 8 You are quite irrational in reasoning, honestly who can survive on $50 even $100 is nothing in this time and era.Mind you a lot of shop owners cheat the government by not paying tax,in short they will be paying indirectly. If they can not manage its better they serve the customers themselves.

  10. Surprising Mr GBM aka allergic to the gym @ 8.
Are you privy to named Shop financial statement for you to insinuate that it cannot manage to pay all those shop reps K1.2m?Just by analyzing the bills we get at the counter and rough calculations I believe if there is respect of the workers the big shops can pay even beyond K1.2million.
Each one of us buy from their and they get away with K500,000 from one customer. If we can look at their daily sales and take away the profit margin which I believe is not less than 12% for the goods sold then it is possible they can manage. Because if they sell 500 million kwacha a day it means they have made a gross profit of K60million on the first day of the month. If the workers are that important they will manage to pay without problems.

  11. Mr Labour leader, the people whose salaries have been adjusted upwards are not even your members so why did you complain. Let people get what they deserve, we have changed and moved on. Zambia will never again bee like the way it was during those days when it was ruled by thieves MMD. We now have a President who cares for the people and want to move this country forward.

  12. You mean there are no men/women to takeover from these leaders who have been running these unions since the Third Republic. I fail to understand why he called for a press conference which is outside his terms, surely spending our hard earned contributions on such.Who is he trying to impress?

  13. PIPO were getting ****ts as salaries where i cant even pay for their kids school fees.
If you cant pay a maid dnt employ a maid….simple.we cant afford to see pipo suffering.

  18. Been a zambian is the greatest thing I can have, working for zambia is the greatest thing I can do. Zambia is my mother country and from it I should benefit. Talking of us zambians and our investors the foreigners, there is no proper relationship especially to companies that makes a lot of money-profit.these companies develops much power to the point of controlling zambia. Where are we as zambia to defend our own rights? Where is the intelligence office to work for zambia? Why do we talk about copper only when there is emerald in zambia? Why is zambian officials so silent about emaralds? What has these emeralds mines done to develop zambia? Any voice from the great heroes of zambia? What are the condtions and standards of these mines as compared to the copper mines?
