MMD blamed for misunderstandng on minimum wage

Share

The Zambia Union of Financial Institutions and Allied Workers (ZUFIAW) has accused the MMD of being the architects of the current misunderstandings on the revised minimum wage.

ZUFIAW president Cephus Mukuka says if the previous government was concerned about the plight of workers in the country,Zambians would not have engaged in the current debate on the minimum wage.

Mr. Mukuka has therefore charged that the MMD should shoulder the blame on the controversial minimum wage.

He says the current poor working conditions are as a result of a laissez-faire attitude of the MMD towards improving the welfare of workers in the country.

Mr. Mukuka has since reiterated that dialogue is the only way to find a lasting solution to the impasse on the minimum wage.

Meanwhile, The Patriotic Front has urged the ministry of labour to deploy labour officers across the country to enforce the revised minimum wage.
PF Deputy National Chairperson Elizabeth Phiri says if some companies are not willing to pay workers well, they are better off closing down.

Mrs. Phiri says the revised minimum wage has come at the right time as a fulfillment of the promise to the people to put more money in their pockets.

Speaking to QFM News, Mrs. Phiri says it is very unfortunate to note that some employers are so greedy despite having a listening government in place.

She says labour minister Fackson Shamenda needs to ensure that workers in the country no longer get salaries that are insufficient to meet their basic needs.

Mrs. Phiri says the Patriotic Front will never stop fighting for the improvement livelihood of poor citizens because it is the main reason it was voted into office.

  1. An oppostiion party opposing increment in minimum wage is utter foolishiness and shooting oneself in the leg. A sure way of alienating the party from voters. Leave such condemnation/critiques to bloggers, ZFE, ZACCI etc

  2. I don’t think I still have the strength to comment on this PF government! They seemingly never cease to embaras and amaze! The level of thinking of the people quoted in this article is frighteningly low and scary!! Lets pray Zambia!

  3. This ZUFIAW/Mukaka/Nonde is a fake! Just when will these id.iots awken to the fact that Zambians know the truth about the real liars hiding behind others? Amambala imwe.

  4. How long will MMD be condemed for every wrong? Thats why they are out of office bcoz of their wrongs so pliz its tym to work and dont blame MMD owes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Mukuka who actually pays you if you have nothing to say keep quiet for once. MMD is not the party in power talk to Wynter Kabimba why are you people making PF indirectly unpopular. Fima Union fimbi fya chabecahbe

  6. Security guards are losing jobs. People cannot afford guards anymore. The number of people being un-employed shall implode.

  7. Cephas Mukuka, we have just finished convincing Winter Kabimba that PF has been in power for 10 months now and cannot perpetually blame “the previous government” for shortcomings that it should be solving. Now Mukuka is parroting the worn out phrase, has he smelt an appointment? Oh sorry I failed to recognise the name…

  8. You guys, the new minimum wage is nothing compared to the campaign promise of HH of minimum wage of K5 million. I wonder what you would have called him had he won the elections and implemented it. Guess thats why he lost….eh!!

  9. I am sure that Shamenda and the PF are learning what governance is.
They have just began to learn that:
    1) governance is reality as opposed to a wish.
    2) It is a science other than mere art and performamnce.
    3) they have learnt that it needs thinking rather than dreaming and singing and dancing victory songs.
    4) It is for people with some reasonable education rather than those with nothing.
    5) That you govern by telling the truth than lying to people about what you cant do.
    6) Most importantly, they are beggining to to learn that they are the ones to play and score, rather than cheer and criticise from the stadium seats.

With these little observations I must say that so far they are not doing well in their class, I hope they will obtain a bear pass – I doubt though!

  10. Zambian is a failed State. A normal country is never governed the way Sata and his PF are doing it. What a shame!

  11. Mukuka’s thinking is totally misplaced.
Why blame MMD over the minimum wage issue?
Has PF implemented the minimum wage or they are mere singing about it?
What would be the possible outcomes of implementing the PF minimum wage, or are we unable to think ahead, or is our foresight impaired?
Who does mukuka blame for PF’s failure to implement the WINDFALL TAX?
Or is Mukuka going to blame MMD for PF’s failure to deliver the development as promissed?
Or is it the MMD to blame for the many reversals on PF governance decisions?
Mukuka wants to be serious only when water level reaches his neck!
What does Mukuka say about employers who genuinly cant afford and the only option is top retrench if forced to pay more?
Does Mukuka think the PF will give employers money to pay workers?

  12. Mukuka, could you tell the nation what should happen to a guy who has employed 5 workers in his little shop, which makes only K2 Million as net profit per month. His 5 employees get K450,000 per month; should he now pay them K1,250,000?
Little logic will tell you Mr Mukuka that K1,250,000 – K450,000 = K800,000 pay rise per person. Multiplying the K800,000 by the 5 employees gives K4,000,000.
Now, even if the guy wnated to run his business at no profit at all, K2m – K4m gives you -K2m (negative 2m). Tell thge nation what he must do – go to the govt or come to you for funding to bridge the K2m gap?

  13. Very dull union leaders. How can the country develop to have these union leaders and politicians like Shamenda and GBM?

  14. A new age has dawned. I was wondering when it would come. MMD used to blame UNIP for every wrong thing. From potholes to bubblegum or lack thereof. But now, its MMD.. Interesting. UNIP can rest. Deputy Chair, whats your portfolio exactly? Should’nt the directives being issued be done by the proper ministry? You will confuse people in the end. Different things being uttered by different people over the same thing. Yesterday it was a call for dialogue with employers, now threats of people going round to check. What is the truth? I will continue waiting i guess..

  15. PF Deputy National Chairperson Elizabeth Phiri says if some companies are not willing to pay workers well, they are better off closing down”.
