FFTUZ President Joyce Nonde-Simukoko has charged that the behavior of the Zambia Federation of Employers over the new minimum wage is shameful.

Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko said no genuine member of the labour movement could criticize government for revising the statutory instrument governing the minimum wages.

She said some ZFE officials have cried foul over the new minimum wage and yet they were silent on the injustices that the labour movement endured during the MMD administration.

“Why are they crying now? When it suits them they keep quiet and they cried the loudest when only a few of their members are affected.”

“As FFTUZ, we don’t sympathize with their position because we believe even the 522,000 revised minimum wage for a domestic worker is too little,” she added.

Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko said the officials from ZFE should refrain from peddling lies that the MMD administration consulted the labour movement when coming up with the last minimum wage.

“As far as I can remember, Hon Liato never consulted anyone,” Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko observed.

She was speaking during a dialogue meeting in Lusaka between the PF and the labour movement organised by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung.

Mrs. Nonde-Simukoko also called on the PF government to start working on delivering its promises of putting more money in the worker’s pockets.

“I think you have been celebrating and it is now time to start working.”

Meanwhile, the Non-Governmental Organization Coordinating Council (NGOCC) has said that while the revision of the minimum wage is a welcome move, government should have taken a holistic approach in its implementation to avoid confusion.

NGOCC board chairperson Beatrice Grillo said that the issue of the minimum wage needs to be handled very carefully or risks being a flop if not well handled.

Mrs. Grillo said that telling people or companies that lack capacity to increase the minimum wage for employees to implement that minimum wage without looking at the mechanism of implementation is a waste of time.

Speaking to QFM News, Mrs. Grillo noted that government needs to take a lot of factors into consideration as the nation does not want to see a situation where people get fired as a result of the minimum wage.

  1. My dear sister, the whole circus is beyond shame. Its a manifest of myopia driven by protruding ignorance and utopia synonymous with lamentable failures.

  2. The nation has become a train wreck desperately calling on Generational change moral leadership of pragmatism and transformation and rational acts.

  3. Unless otherwise, this country is heading for an implosive “socialist revolution” by a generation of young ones tired of their state of hopelessness and hollow hoaxes by clueless opportunists peddling lies and threats on them. We are done with political emancipation its time for economic emancipation a quest for every young patriot.

  4. Is it just opposition for its own sake??? This is the stance initially taken by Shame.nda. Now lookt at his inconsistences ie take people to police for demanding dialogue only to turn around that he was misunderstood. These Union leaders are a bunch of divided, greedy characters worse than employers.

  5. # 1 Senior Citizen. Thanks to let us know Wamu ya ya ya Joice Nonde Simukoko is your sister in arms. This is one person who has spent her life in labour movement and have difficulties to note what she has achieved so far other than cleverly being president for FTTUZ for more than 20 years. Remember she rebeled from ZCTU hence her FTTUZ presidency for years now. She has always supported PP, in fact for some unknown reason she is not in PF govt. She can not champion for workers cause today when she has been comfortable by sticking to that post for years and throw mud at ZFE over minimum wage. She does not offer any solution to the hap hazard minimum wage announced by PFgovt. What will PF govt deliver since they haven’t got a road map to deliver even on lies made to Zambians – she supports.

  6. Mrs Nonde-Simukoko, I think you “misunderstood” ZFE on this one and perhaps check the facts before you guff through the media. ZFE were attributed with calls for Govt to gave a considered implementation plan of the minimum wage and not a decree with immediate effect. And judging from the developments, it’s clear that ZFE were right.

  7. You so-called labor leaders are double tongued! Ba Joyce stop your rubbish and cheap talking we all know ati ‘nabamilishamo’ just let people express themselves over this stupid issue which has led the many of us working for civil servants jobless!

  8. Nkonde,if MMD was not consulting so should the PF, that’s very absurd situation. We expected a different approach from PF not to relie on MMD footsteps. MMD had their on time, so this is the time for PF to shine if they can, which i doubt. Sata was a MMD no # 2 and any failure that was associated with the Party, he played great role to such failure. There is noway Sata can be absolved from MMD’s failures.IF you talk about corruption Sata was there in person. There is noway you can point accusing finger at Chiluba without doing the same to Sata. The third term saga was the baby of Cobra.cobra was found wherever Chiluba was hence the dossier on him.

  9. She supported MMD during campaigns ,another hypocrite.ZFE needs new blood. She wants to keep the position until menopause

  10. There is just too much “CRYING WOLF” going on this issue. Unfortunately, this is all too common even in so called “developed economies” of the world. The issue of minimum wage is always fought tooth and nail by the corporate world and their surrogates. Here in the USA, the business world and their surrogates in the US Congress (mostly Republicans) behave exactly the same way Zambian Corporations and their surrogates (the Opposition and Employer orgs) are reacting to this issue every time it comes up—Oh look, “the Sky is falling”! You know; the kind of reaction which would make even “Mr. Chicken Little” envious.

  11. continue…from #10:

If you can believe it or not, there are places even here in the United States where the minimum wage is still as low as $6 to $8 an hour. Now, any honest person will tell you that there are very few places (if any at all) where one can survive on that kind of pay in the USA. But despite the glitz and glamour surrounding the so called “FIRST WORLD”, millions of people are wallowing in poverty (heard of the WORKING POOR?) trying to make it on a 6-$8 per hour minimum wage rate. Meanwhile the rich are getting richer and corporations keep making obscene profits on the backs of minimum wage earners. And yet we still have folks who feel the status quo is just fine—no wonder GREED is one of the seven greatest sins mentioned in the Bible.

  12. continue…from #11:

No corporation on planet earth, no matter how big, small, or profitable they are, will ever acknowledge making enough to accept employee wage adjustments without resistance. This is an historical fact! In fact if employers are allowed, most of them will even pay their workers lower than the set minimum wage (no matter how low) and not feel even an ounce of guilty about it. This is the kind of “capitalist mentality runs amok” going on here.

  13. continue…from #12:

For as long as “us” the corporate world are doing fine, we don’t need government to butt-in (oh yes, free enterprise!) because telling us what to do will make a lot of people lose jobs. Nonetheless, if we screw up and bring the economy to the brink of collapse, well, it is your responsibility “Mr. Government” to bail us out because; YES same reason again, a lot of people will lose their jobs. Does this sound familiar?!

  14. ZFE has never opposed the minimum wage, its opposing the way it has been implemented. So mama wamu yayaya dont use the opportunity to attack people an decent platforms.

  15. Joyce youb are right girl. These devilish vampires want to continue sucking the blood of poor Zambians. They have no sense of shame even. What is a 522 pin compared to what these Vampires get? Really the world is coming to the end as the scripture says…people will be lovers of themselves…really Vampires.
