President Michael Sata this morning stunned Chiefs from Southern Province after he ordered them to remove their hats before commencing a meeting at State House.

President Sata was meeting 15 Chiefs drawn from various districts in Southern Province at State House for a consultative meeting.

The agenda of the meeting which is now underway has not been revealed but State House insiders say the recent realignment of Chirundu and Itezhi Tezhi districts will be discussed.

The Chiefs are also expected to express their resentment over the purported tribal grouping known as Tongas under Oath.

President Sata who kept the traditional leaders waiting in the conference room from 08:30 Hours only emerged around 10 Hours and immediately started ordering the Chiefs to take off their hats.

President Sata also ordered some of the Chiefs who had taken the back row to move in front “so that everyone can see you.”

“Why are you hiding behind? Do you want to appear as if you are the Secretary of your Chiefs here? Come in front so that we all could see you,” President Sata ordered.

By the time of publishing, President Sata was having a closed door meeting with the Chiefs.

  1. YES, WE SHOULD RESPECT OTHER PIPO`S OFFICE. ULEMU. WHEN THE PRESIDENT VISITS YOU, HE KNEELS B4 U GUYS. DON`T TAKE HIM FOR GRANTED.

  2. What is the problem with our President let him not get intoxicated with power. He should have respect for the traditional rulers. This is the same man who had been going round palaces kneeling to these same chiefs he is disrespecting today . You will soon need them Bwana . Its too early for you to start creating enemies

    • What is disrespectful about what the president did? It is part of tradition in Zambia to remove your heart when engaging with elders. The chiefs have gone to another “Elected Chief’s” palace (State House) – they deserve to give the president respect. Don’t be easily swayed by reporter’s views…! I can tell you that when Sata will visit the chiefs at their palaces he will kneel down and club in respect of the chief and he will not even ask the chief to remove his or her hat.

    • you mean because of their witchcraft!
      give us a break !
sata also has us wwwychiundaponde, chikwanda, kopa, malamacintumbwe, polito, kacela, nabwalya, mukungule, mpepo ,etc
      he so your craft !

  3. Its not a good idea to rile tonga chiefs when you are trying to create unity. So many chiefs have entered State House in traditional attire and have never been ordered to strip! it may give the impression that the president has issues with tongas

  4. tetamashimba its not about power but courtesy u have seen president sate kneel before ordinary pipo like u and me yet u cant let him get the little respect he deserves be  a good critic

    • Respect is not requested, it is given free if people have respect for you, demanding it, it just shows that next time, they will not come!

    • Mwine Mushi, you have a valid point. Pipo need to respect the office. Sata has a point that state house is not familiar grounds. He had courtesy to ask them to be in front, that is respect. What about Tonga and chief? is there a stand off with chiefs too? No, am sure HH is not a chief unless someone clarify that  HH is a chief now hence a stand off.

    • respect is gained throgh hard work…….goes along with trust. These twk ain’t so cheal commodities that one can get from any store at anh price.

  5. These are the same chiefs who supported RB and denounced sata. They told their subjects to vote for hH becoz he was tonga. I would never respect such people who take sides when it suits them. These are same chiefs who refused to meet Sata when he campaigned in southern . Let them take off those hats. It’s being a gentleman by removing those stupid hats.

    • @Woman in red- let us learn to be sincere. Can you ever yell Chitimukulu told his people to vote for HH or Banda. Why should be an issue for Bamba to vote for sata and when HH gets votes in his province it tribal.

    • @Woman in red- let us learn to be sincere. Can you ever tell me Chitimukulu told his people to vote for HH or Banda? Why should it not be an issue for Bambas to vote for sata and when HH gets votes in his province it tribal.

    • ….for HH becoz he was Tonga. When Chiefs and their subjects in Luapula and Northern province vote for Sata,it is not tribalism but pure support of their own son of the soil.Who is tribalistic.>70% of posts in govt.are occupied by bembas.what do you call that?

  6. Good though would have been communicated to them in a better way. Even Sheikhs Wear Suits when they visit the western world. Some of our Chiefs sometimes really look very very shabby.

  7. In all fairness the President once is at their respective palaces so to speak he kneels down, they come to state house they should have been briefed but tribal issue with some chiefs decided otherwise…The office of Presidency is not Sata hence respect and protocol should be adhere to…..

    • You seem to have beef. why should you call a non-living thing like a hat stupid? You seem to be implying that because they refused to meet Sata when he was in the opposition, then Sata should now humiliate them! a wise leader do that. he does not revenge. Hats constitute part of our chiefs traditional attire. others carry walking sticks, others carry fly  whisks still others wear hats. to sink low as to demand of chiefs to take off their hats is petty.

    • #11 Kabwe Warriors, pls stop using that pseudo name, Kabwe Warriors is a respectable team that does not associate with crap thinking like yours!!

  8. Hehehehe Kateka! Chiefs from southern Province Good move osati kunvelela chi hh. hh is a ka small mind… good move i hope u humble yourselves in that meeting

  9. I don’t like the lack of respect the President has shown the Chiefs. That information should have been notified to the respective palaces and chiefdom offices in the invitation. The sitting arrangements should also have been sorted out by whoever the kaboyis are at our State House.

Furthermore, it is a waste of developmental hours for the President to keep guests waiting for his late coming. Time is money, and a President living in the 21st Century should exemplify this.

I hope he has access to these views being posted here so that he is reminded about them and picks and adds to his vast wisdom.

Long live Zambia! God bless our people.

  10. Yes! This is just alright. Remember when Sata visits their palaces, he kneels to them as others have already alluded to, and at times even removing his shoes, just to speak with a chief. So, it’s alright. Protocol must be observed!

  11. I think is not a bad idea for the presido to ask the chiefs to remove hats during the meeting at state house. It show respect to the owner of the house. Its not zambian to show seniority at a foreign place. The presido kneels before the chiefs whenever he visits them .

  12. It appears the man in the picture is a god to some small minds in Zambia, everything he does however silly, it will still find defence, what a shame.

  13. I agree I dont see anything absurd about this, unless you are not as educated, besides those hats from chiefs scare me. Cant see anything wrong, especially as I have campaigned tirelessly to get rid of chiefs. That era of Shaka zulu etal chiefs is ancient
I am surprised they were accorded to even come to state House, not that I think much of statehouse to start with.

    Thanks

    • Nowadays Mushota you are impressing me. You are now talking sense. I also think these chiefs have no place in our modern democratic dispensation. Walya iwe!

    • @ Mushota (26) It’s unbelievable that grace is working on you. You are maturing, albeit marginally. I guess it has to do with your uncle ( A wise and reasonable man, and I add a technocrat) who blasted you over the net posting after you attacked him on his picture. Since then you seem reasonable. Negative therapy works basa! Keep growing girl and let go that egocentric behavior of ACCA, CIMA, MBA PhD grand standing blaa blaa blaa unless you desire to motivate young Zambians to aspire to academic excellence by mention of the same. For now you have found your bearings. Peace!

    • Sata for once was right this time.mushota just because you stayed over seas briefly doesnt mean you have to forget you are a ka traditional girl with a ka traditional background. if there can be a place for Queens and Kings whom Sata goes to begg for Donor Aid in the western world why should we not have a place for them here.

  14. Thus why the Litunga cant be summoned by Sata to State house. This is an embarasement to the chiefs. Rebuke out of love is the best. Recomending chiefs for their dressing and patience should have been number one before they were rebuked like that. He might have spoken the truth but the way he expressed himself. Sata cant tell the Lozi Induna to remove his hat at state house.

    • The Prez probably wouldn’t have to tell him to remove it coz it would have already been done. Every Litunga who has historically worn a hat also abides by the rules of etiquette associated with wearing one :) That’s kinda the point about hats. Knowing when to tip it, touch the brim, jam it firmly on and remove it.

    • @ Mubanga. Surely you can respond to this without resorting to that. For all you know the Prez could make the hat wearing Litunga an exception to the rule. There was nothing insulting in the comment above. Just an opinion about someone removing a hat if summoned.

    • @ Mubanga for you to even know that there is a chief in Zambia called Litunga simply tells me that the Litunga is BIG.

  15. I feel SATA (as president) NOt as a (Bemba tribalist) must do more to discontinue the tension between Bembas and Tongas…such actions only worsens the situation!!! sad

  16. It does not matter if their heads remain bear, I agree those hearts and whiskers are very scary as most chiefs are wizards and witches.

  17. I think he knows these things because he is also “indoshi”, you think those eyes are red for nothing, they can see at night! The chap is norcturnal. You will also recall he once touched a chief from North-Western on the head at UTH, her knows these relics store their charms on “tulukobo” I also wonder why Tonga chiefs agreed to parade themselves before Sata where they were made to wait for 2 and half hours before being head-undressed. Do you think you will ever see Barotse chiefs lining themselves up to meet this good for nothing CNP, NEVER! And by the way, he never asked the late Chitimukulu to take off his heart when he came to see him at Starte House, no why Tonga chiefs? STINKING TRIBALISM!

  18. I believe traditional leaders were wrong to cover there heards with hats in somebody’s home. I am fully in support with the president’s action towards traditional leader because the same people who are supposed to preserve culture are the ones in the forefront of erroding traditional morals. It is Zambian tradition to have hats off in a home which not yours when you are just a visitor. This is a sign of mutual respect and continuity of the preservation of our culture. Belaleta no buloshi Ku state house. Ubuloshi bwakufisa mutusote

  19. It beats my heart to see some of you blogers think so low…A politician and a tradition chief.seven guns of all things on earth mfuti chabeee….am still wondering.

  20. Ba LT? Is this really news to even publish to the public? You are acting unprofessionaly of late.here its just a two way thing….If the presidents takes off his shoes b4 entering the chiefs house (As that is the rule)why cant they adhere to what he wants at his palace? What is so special with them that they should not follow wat the rules the owner of the house has put. This is just simple and staright foward.

  21. I think it is news. Sata complained when Bush was late so he should apologise to the chiefs for keeping them waiting for too long.

  22. If this isn’t news why are you commenting! Its news because Sata is provoking Tongas. What difference does it make it someone wears a hat or not this isn’t the colonial days.

  23. Hats off to the Prez :) Just another faux pas…

A little advance diplomacy required for sure but many have left my mum’s house with hat in hand and invisible flush on face. It’s just old school respect. Grew up with most family and friends being strict adherents to the rule. My mum’s line is always,

“Are you a soldier? Please remove your cap/hat!” Cue in sheepish shuffle and hand straight to the head. They are then rewarded with a little smile, “Glad to see your handsome face. Have you eaten yet?” Said in one of ten Zed languages. Could do with that skill myself :)

  24. I believe that presidents have been kneeling before chiefs almost for ever in Zambia as a sign of respect. Now I not sure who brought about that custom. However if the president kneels when he goes to the palaces and does so out genuine respect, I do not see why he should not respect them when they are at State.

  25. Respect for elders is very important. This guys days are numbered, you can not  disrespect elders like that. We have always respected chiefs, why should they take off their hats today. who is sata to tell chiefs to take off their hats. Sata is only president for a while, chiefs will be chiefs.  those trying to adhere to the western culture, it just shows how ignorant and foolish you are. Mulechulafye mafiyenu, ukulapipafye amafi utukote m******mwe. Mushota, ba noko amalepe

    • Has it crossed your mind that some of the people you are addressing could be your elders too :) Your first sentence is worthy of applause though.

    • Whats your problem mwana. Stop insulting Mushota. I find it difficult that you are talking about respect but in the same breath you are insulting others!

  26. yaya sana!!! nfwiti na nfwiti comedy. wi..cha…craftoooooo!!! come 2016 the cobra will be kneeling before the same chiefs he is treating like *****s today. lets wait and see.

  27. The hats which our chiefs put on I am sure is part of their traditional attire or dressing as chiefs, so for the president to ask them to remove their hats is almost undressing them in public. Remember before we had suits our chiefs had their own dressing which has remained to this day. Some of those hats signifies the authority and leadership of a particular chiefdom so to ask them to remove their hats is something else. Mind you before we had people we call presidents today our chiefs were already there. Lets NOT embarrass our traditional rulers all in the name of politics it will not take us any way. Remember a nation without culture is a dead one and the president wants to kill it.

  28. All political leaders are subjects of traditional leaders, therefore it is any body`s expectation that subjects will respect their chiefs. If those chiefs were from the northern part of this country was he going to order them to remove their hats?RESPECT, RESPECT RESPECT AND RESPECT.I would take it personal if anyone disrepected my chief.

  29. @Mushota#27
Who the hell do you think you are? A fool of non-description. Don’t ever compare ubaba mukulu u Shaka our mighty forefather, a figher and a winner who earned praise and respect among Europeans to some person who by some reasons known to you happens to be your favourite person of the moment. Make no mistake, we South Africans respect our diverse traditions at all levels. We have even integrated traditional customs, norms, beliefs, culture, etc. at all levels, even at tertiary level or at the highest office, the union buildings (President office). Our president respects full traditional attires of all ethnic groups, not what you are used to in your world. If you are looking for jokes, you are knocking on a wrong door. We will unpack exactly the language that fits your character

  30. We apologise to those poor chiefs who were subjected to imense trauma by someone they thought could convey recognition of their traditional identity and their status among villagers in Tonga nation. If a leader cannot draw a line between traditional values and personal egos, then outsiders cannot distinguish between simple thugs on the streets and traditional custodians (the traditional hierachy). Outsiders pay a lot of money just to learn more about chieftainships and their tradaitional practices and they do not pay a single cent to see thugs because they see no premises for that. S. Africa earns billions of dollars from such sources, instead of increasing the external debt through senseless borrowing. Respect traditional chiefs, no wonder whites easily tie you to debts and steal copper

  31. the only logic about the issue are cristal clear namely,LATE COMING-he had to consult his vudu adviser if some of these chiefs had that stuff with them and his vudu adviser saw them in their heads or he was advised to make the chief s vudu powerless by commanding them to remove their hats, thats why state has protocal person saw nothing wrong for chiefs to proceed with their hats on.SATA is good at keeping time but this is not the first time SATA has called chiefs to come to state house,a while ago he invited chiefs from lusaka province and some had their hats on but the majority of the lusaka province chiefs are women and am sure those chiefs who had hats from lusaka had no VUDU.sata knows our traditions but he had no choice.as to the TONGA chiefs ,LEARN TO LEAVE UR NYANGAS @ UR PALACES

  32. This president has shown yet again how steeped in tribalism he really is. He has never asked the Chitimukulus or the Mwata Kazembe or any non-Tonga chief to remove their hats. This is not a light thing he has asked these traditional leaders but a huge insult. Yo cannot call people for consultations and then begin to insult them. I really see the wisdom of the Lozis seeking breakaway from this sheer foolishness. This president is seeking to plunge this nation into war. Who was he trying to appease by making Tonga chiefs take off their hats, his Bemba base? He is such an unfit leader to lead mother Zambia. The words of KK are coming to the fore when he declared that Sata is unfit to be president. He is simply an embarrassment to the nation. The nation would be better off without him.

  33. In fact if you did know how the President conducts meetings, you should see the need why he asked them to remove their hats. The first thing in this meetings is singing National A them and then offering prayer to our God. If these chiefs had been schooled they would have taken off their hats on their on without being reminded. Secondly some of these chiefs have borns to chew hence their behavior.

  34. Thanks to the President. We are in support of you.Now help us sort out Bishop ALICK BANDA of NDOLA DIOCESE.He has destroyed THE PROVINCE.

  35. All the fools supporting this foolish act don’t know what it means.SATA is their subject ,chiefs remain chiefs be it in your home.Pliz our chiefs should retain their respect by not going to state house,Sata as a subject should visit them in their Palaces. This is really Dictatorship,No respect for the owners of the Land. All chiefs and their Royal Establishments in Zambia Should stand firm and Ask Sata to apologise for this.

  36. Chosa nsapato iwe  ufuna ku nyozela boma, na ndazo nikuchosa olo ndiwe mfumu, kwamene uko kwamene bakuziba ati ndiwe mfumu niku State House kuno nkala pansi unkale na ziiiiieeee!!!!!!

  37. CNP at work! no respect whatsoever! shame on you! you r an embarrassment to the nation! those are elders, traditional elders for that matter! even if you r a president honestly, have some sort of decency and respect. did u call them there only to go and embarrass them? kwena uli ndoshi iwee!!!!

  38. Are Chiefs not Zambians? Is Sata not president of all Zambians?I do recall RB when about to leave the country as usual used to say,’ AM PRESIDENT OF ALL ZAMBIANS’.Stop seeing things in the tribal eyes.Take a leaf from Ingosi yama Ingosi MPEZENI of the Ngoni of Chipata, who has no issues with going to State house. If you want development its the govt of the day to deal with.

  39. Is this news? And who is a writer of this dull useless news? Why cant they remove their Nyau Fisote given that they were at State house where they have to follow protocol just as the President and Ministers follow protocol when they Visit these chiefs palaces. Please can we have another piece of news.

  40. 67 you are another fool, don’t you know that chiefs existed before Gvts,if you came from a Royal family you wouldn’t say that.SATA is a Subject like you, your uncle is just indiscipline. English manners have no space in our tradition,President can’t hold a chief on the sholders like we are seeing with your uncle.

  41. This is where I think our journalists have problems. I was not at state house on that day, but I dont believe that the President ordered chiefs to remove their hats. Before you report, try to read the spirit of the person when they atter words. The way I know Mr. Sata, he was simply btrying to charm the chiefs in his usual jovial manner, and I do not think that there was malice in what he said. Surely, this can not be news. There were more important things to report on on that day. If you have no news, come to me, and I will give you something to write about on any day!
