South African soccer fans attacked the Chipolopolo team bus, and injured Mweene and Katongo. Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene needed stitches on his head after a stone was thrown at the national team’s bus following the friendly international win over South Africa in Soweto on Wednesday night.

Goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene received medial treatment from the Zambian Medical team of Joseph Kabungo and Gibson Chaloba who worked tirelessly to remove specks of glass that got int Mweene’s eyes as he grimaced with pain.

Kennedy Mweene is said to be upset by the incident, but unhurt apart from the stitches that are unlikely to keep him out of Sunday’s Telkom Knockout semifinal against Bloemfontein Celtic.

The Chipolopolo bus was brought to a sudden halt after heavy rocks and missiles were rained on the Zambia Hyundai bus as it left the FNB stadium at the Soccer City Complex.

The bus driver stopped the vehicle and fled the bus.

South African Football Association (SAFA) president Kirsten Nematandani has since apologized to FAZ president Kalusha Bwalya for what he called regrettable and barbaric acts of hooliganism.

The incident will be a wake-up call for the organisers of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa next year.

  1. These South Africans are not different from some of our own CaveMen in southern province-they still think they are in the times of Shaka no wonder they enslaved by whites

    • Let us avoid grouping people- South Africa has very nice people but only a few elements did something wrong. If you have an issue with one or two people from southern province, limit your comments to the two, because one day you will be ashamed to receive the only available bread for your survival because it will be in hands of someone you have insulted for no reason

    • your choice to begin talking about the people of southern province makes you seem as primitive as the south africans you describe. tribalist fool.

  2. Move 2013 Cup of nations to another country please. South Africa is made of 30% xenophobic beasts. I watched the shooting of marouding protesters at a Gold mine last month, and sympathised with the white mine owners and wives of slain beasts.

  3. SOUTH AFRICAN ARE CRAZY PEOPLE ALL THEY THOUGHT THEY WILL WIN THE GAME-TO HELL WITH THEM-STUPID CRAZY PEOPLE AND THEY WILL BE KNOCKED OF AFCON IN THE FIRST STAGES!

  4. SOUTH AFRICANS ARE CRAZY PEOPLE ALL THEY THOUGHT THEY WILL WIN THE GAME-TO HELL WITH THEM-STUPID CRAZY PEOPLE AND THEY WILL BE KNOCKED OF AFCON IN THE FIRST STAGES!

  5. Typical, Let this be a lesson learnt to us. Maybe it is not a country we would want to associate ourselves with in terms of Football. We can pay other Countries that appreciate Zambia. SHAME ON SOUTH AFRICANS THEY WILL NEVER CHANGE. This is why their Ba ZUNGU kick them.

  6. These pipo are thankful, the matter must be reported to FIFA or CAF. We want to to help them and the reward we get, stoned. One day the will come to Ndola and meet Jerabos.

  7. Im shamed to be a South African, i just dont get it. Black people have lost their minds, totally hopeless! Is this the freedom we fought for???

  8. I hate South Africa and was just telling my husband how unsafe I feel when am that side, the people are rough and got no love and respect for life, thats why they kill each other like chickens and dont give a damn. Sorry to Mweene and Katongo, please recover soon, Zambia loves you

  9. apologise on behalf of the innocent south africans, move afcon to other country and leave those stupids of gauteng, safa will learn tha bafana is not a gauteng team

  10. Stupid South Africans! You behave like monkeys! You will not go through the first round of the AFCON 2013.Chipolopolo the Real men will get the cup right in your homeland!Hahaaha hahaha hahaah!

  11. South Africa has become more dangerous than under apartheid because there is now a combination of illiteracy, ignorance, and a claim to both as a legitimate right!!! This state of affairs is so frightening it is slowly pulling that country down a slope. Good luck, RSA; remember the Zimbabweans now call us “BROTHERS”. Ask them what we were before they got flushed down the toilet…

  12. What is so painful about losing especially as to the bafana bafana becoz I believe they are used to losing and beside that was just a friendly game.South africans have to understand that we are the champions and no two ways about it. Thumbs up to chipolopolo that game was interesting let us conquer Africa in football. Thanks to Mbesuma goal.

  13. Napapata vibantu imwe leave zambia alone.soiuth africa learn to accept wen u loose.sorry mwene and katongo we luv u very much and zambia is so proud of u.

  14. Kalu should also move our team from the unsafe training ground they plan to use for AFCON 2013 prep I hear these slaves raging with jelousy have access to it, they won the AFCON 1996 after druging us previous night b4 playing Tunisia this time we need to watch their stupid moves, they know their home is our backyard.

  15. The plot by these *****s to play against Chipolopolo has been exposed. They wanted to win Chipolopolo and claim that had they made it to the last AFCON they would ve lifted it, those of us in SA recently have heard those stories. There are a number of people who felt that Chipolopolo was handed the out of pity and SA has been thinking like this. So they thought that they could teach as a lesson surely bafana bafana or put differently now vipuba vipuba. Today I protest I’m not going any SA shop I shall avoid going there the entire day the want to kill our players who brought glory to our nation and I should be supporting their economy so they can continue misbehaving every time we visit them guys lets teach these fools a lesson

  16. Chaps should have stoned their own useless players. SAFA should be ashamed. Rubbish pitch and poor organisation. No wonder they didnt even have an electronic scoreboard. The world cup was organised by White SouthAfrica. The black people there need to get civilised. The colonial days are over. get a life!

  17. This is a lesson to Zambia not to leak any foreign asss. When these people come to Zambia we treat them like kings. We will leave the chair for them. That was a friendly game with a country we helped a lot during aparthied. Kalusha must learn that these people are not our friends. We should not camp their and we should refuse a stadium that is in a compound. We were stoned in Soweto!!! what were we doing there?

    • TRUETRUE, I JUST HATE IT WHEN I SEE THOSE STUPID ZAMBIAN ASS FYOFYONTA LING FOREIGNERS. This should be a wakeup call. They treat us bad we should also retaliate. SOUTH AFRICANS USELESS

  18. AMA SOUTH AFRICANS TABA TASHA BAFIKAMBA. WE HOSTED THEM AND HELPED THEM DEFEAT APARTHEID AND THEY CAN’T APPRECIATE US. BAKACHIMONA NGABAISA KUNO.

  19. Two boys, aged 12 and 13, have been taken into police custody for allegedly pelting the Zambian soccer team’s bus with stones, the SA Football Association (Safa) said on Thursday. We can confirm the incident took place and the perpetrators who pelted the Zambian bus, two young boys, were confined by police.

They are in police custody,” Safa spokesman Dominic Chimhavi said

  20. South Africa has the potential of going down the drain. Even worse than Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans are more resilient and are now turning round their country because of their patriotism and focus. South African blacks do not know a damn thing because the economic power still rests with the white minority. Zimbabweans have learnt a bitter lesson and now call Zambians all the good names; our brothers, sekurus, comrades accross Zambezi etc from calling us beggers, makwereres, bemba theives etc. We have stood by them all the time including during the liberation wars. And now thankless South Africans.

  21. This is really shameful to South Africa, that game was the Mandela Challenge Cup?? Who would want to associate that icon with violence, in a friendly game?? They are hosting AFCON in just over two months, who can be assured of their safety??? We certainly need to complain to both FIFA and CAF over this. I know it is tricky as we may endager our players who play and live there, like Mweene, but we owe it to other countries for South Africa to be disciplined, if this escalates during the AFCON, we will be blamed that we did not bring the problem to the fore!! South Africa will be aliminated in first round and these thugs will wreck havoc on players. Remember thats stadium which will host first and final games and they are losing first game to Cape Verde Island, watched them play Ghana!!!

  22. I wish our two gallant guys speedy recovery and hope we learn lesson on protecting our team, next time around, our camping should be treated with the seriousness it deserves.
We won the game, but seriously we did not play very well. The midfield was porous and even the defence did not instil a lot of confidence in the goal keeper, we exposed him a lot. Going forward, Mbesuma and Jacom Mulenga have earned his first team, Chamanga should not be included in final team, Chris Katongo is needed for leadership and motivation but not automatic starter, apart from Kalaba, we need Clifford Mulenga in the team, Renhard, forget about where you clashed!!! Give the boy a second chance! Nigerai, Ghana won by convincing margins, we should have done the same with RSA!!!

  23. let them show us video footage of these smalls stoning the bus. its just an excuse knowing minors will be forgiven easily.

  24. Unfortunately that means they will not be able to watch most games as they will be played indoors,no one on grandstand.A batch of clowns.

  25. Too bad for what happened but Please let us not all hate on every south african. Its just a fill that are this bad. There very good south africans too.

  26. From the time I saw a black South African ran on a fellow black person after the person passed in fron’t of him and the security guy and people around did nothing, I then agreed that south Africa is a dangerous country. shame on the hulligans and FIFA should ban South Africa for a yea so that they learn to behave well.

  27. South africans learn to accept deafit and quench your frustration with tears like Ghana and Ivory coast. Throwing stones will not help you. Favour is ours.

  28. Hooliganism is every where even in Zambia, you remember your Chipolopolo were beaten by one west African team you people rioted victimised the Nationals of that country who were in Zambia. Learn to understand hooliganism its not in the policy of RSA Govt, and this is an incident that can be easily handled, rather than the whole Zambian Nation screaming here, you must thank your Sangoma Katongo who remote controls every thing using his magic.

    • The situation was different. I know the incidence you are talking about. It was when Senegal beat Zambia in the world qualifying series. Do you know what the Senegalese living in Zambia did after winning the game? They tied a Zambian flag to a goat which they paraded in the city. They were so arrogant and boastful saying that they own our wealth, our women and soon they will own the country. This angered many Kitwe residents who then retaliated!

  29. All you Kwerekweres in SA deserve to be stoned. Go back to your countries you fools and leave us alone. You run away from your stinking poverty stricken countries. You will never see us in your rotten countries. Those stones shud have been directed at those illegal Zambians who were in the stadium.

  30. Mpahlele, really, are you for real. You should just create your own country where all you bitter people can live. It is people like you that has turned South Africa into such a circus.

  31. As Christian lets forgive them….its sad what transpired …… but lets not add more condemnation they are still our African brothers….when does Africa unit, a what cost, stage or situation…..all Christians thinks of Christ please

  32. South Africa is for both….brown and pink people so we can’t single out the colours here, the behavior is unacceptable Fifa and Caf should move in as fast as possible either to change the venue or punish them by playing 2 Afcon games without their fans there,i don’t know who is safe in that country anymore cause if i a player I wouldnt go back to play in that country anymore. It makes me sad to see that something like this can still happen between two countries living in peace.

  33. why did we help fight arpatheid.  we kept them like kings. Now u can understand why whites oppressed these people. they dont value human life. no wonder they can shoot each other down like animals over a pay in this centuary.

  34. Too Bad, but you are bafanas, why don’t you grow up to bakulu bakulu?
No need to behave that way since you have been bafana bafana from time in memorial.

  35. I was at the stadium … the zambian bus was parked just next to other normal peditrain gate… Frankly it was a combination of poor security and south africans violent bloodthirsty attitude… This bus should have been parked next to the ‘tunnel’ but our boys had to walk’ to the bus.. Besides this stupid incident… we enjoyed beating the small boys…

  36. This is truly sad. We need God’s intervention, things can not continue like this. Innocent people end up suffering the most because of such arrogance. My apologies to the Zambian team.

  37. Today it is with shame that I call myself a South African.
I learnt with horror in the morning news that Chipolopolo’s bus was stoned last night.
While I will not presume to speak on behalf of SAFA, the people of South Africa or indeed those hooligans amongst us, I wish to express my heartfelt apology to the Zambian people.
Indeed it was only yesterday that our political leaders found refuge in Zambia.
It was only yesterday that I visited The Vic Falls and had so much courtesy, I lost my phone and is was returned to me.
It was yesterday we cheered for this same Zambian team winning the AfCon.
I don’t suppose these few words will undo it all. I so wish it didn’t happen. As a small man in the street gracefully hope the Zambian people accept my apology and that of many of us.

  38. People! this was done by few undesirables I love Zambians i am married to a Zambian wrong is wrong yes, but you cannot insult all SA because of these hooligans I m a good South African so disappointed with your comments

  39. No 3…youre just an *****.Think before you write here.Stick to the point under discussion and dont bring in your sewerage poluted mind here.If you have nothing to say just SHUT it

  40. Why are they so rough against their own people & yet they cant do the same to the Boers? I agree with somebody who said no wonder they’re still slaves in their own country. They don’t deserve any good treatment if they can behave like animals..*****s!!! Loosers!!!

  41. Mwanya bafipe, this is very bad and I think CAF should even change the venue for the AFCON as these people are Barberians. Why behave this way when the game was just a friendly game?? More is much more left to be desired by actions such as this. Its a big Shame to their community. Shame on them all including their families. SHAME SHAME SHAME!!!!!!

  42. South Africans are only happy when they lose to white teams. Inferiority complex is very high among black South Africans. What a shame!

  43. But the stadium was empty, less than half the stadium capacity attended the match,so were did the stone thrower come from……..!

  44. Where was the South African Security as well as the Stadium security to protect players? Poor planning and taking things for granted that all is well because most of the officials and players live and play in South Africa

  45. SA is behaving like this over a friendly game! what about when the actual Nations Cup starts? This incidence has to be taken seriously and it is high time the tournament was withdrawn from SA and taken elsewhere were there are sane people.

  46. BA FI KALA BA SOUTH UBUFONTINI TABWAKAPWE. ECHO BABA LIILA PA MITWE KU MA AFRIKAANS. THE ONLY THINK I LIKE ABOUT SA MATAKO YABA GELO. OTHERWISE THE COUNTRY IS FULL OF SHI T PEOPLE

  47. It was not intentional to stone you, but you needed to have respect, all your players including mbesuma who scored play in SA we teach him soccer and he stubs us at the back by scoring against us? Even if it were you how would you take it???

    • Van Persie scored against Arsenal, his immediate past team were he was captain, but there was no stone throwing. Your reasoning is very disapointing, Lizard. Thats the meaning of your name in Zed.

    • malinso you are a Zambian. No South African says “stub” when they mean “stab”. A South African rather pronounces it as “Steb”

  48. this is very sad and we should do something about this we can not just fold our hands like nothing happened we are the copper bullet for God sake let us show these people what we are made of. so this should never mesh with us ever again.

  49. #56 is exellent, jst an isolated event just need to improve security, but safa should learn from it,most SA’s know and treat Zambians well as brothers lets forget what happened. If a donkey kicks you and you kick back then you are also a donkey.Iets remain sober

  50. something is wrong with black man period…..He is like a radical muslim who kills his own muslims…….blackman something is really wrong…dirty too much garbage on streets….black black is still fighting for freedom yet he was given in 1994.stupid human being

  51. Must be Julius Malema who organised these thugs….dubula Chipolopolo….our blood was shed in Gabon AND WE WON IT…MWEENES BLOOD WILL NOT BE IN VAIA…GO BOYS 2013!!

  52. Two youths, aged 12 and 13 were immediately detained and are being held at the Booysens Police Station and investigations in a case of malicious damage to property have been opened….Well I wouldnt be suprised if their parents taught them this during the strikes that have rocked SA

  53. There is just too much stone throwing in SA currently…our parents did this during Cha cha cha…and they were fighting for independence…lolest…Wake up South Africans it was just a game!

  54. I am told Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has already decided not to lodge complaint over the stoning of the bus after SAFA apologised. While I find it difficult to accept, I fully understand a number of issues had to be taken into account in arriving at this decision, including avoiding straining the relationship as we have a number of players plying their trade in South Africa, not to mention the FAZ President himself. But SAFA must go a step further and ensure the culprits are punished and the public educated on the potential implications of such barbaric behaviour as well as realistic assessment of the capacity of their team!!!

  55. @74 if they will not report this case to FIFA, Then we know HOW corrupt and STUPID they are. I am sure they have been given BROWN Envelops. FOR A DRIVER TO ABANDON The BUS, A fellow SOUTH AFRICAN MEANS it was serious.
THIS IS A TEST FOR KALU. WE WANT TO SEE HOW HE WILL HANDLE THE MATTER.

  56. Sanction South Africa, no mercy for this type of attitude.

Would they have forgiven you if you did this to them, taking into account that we are current cup holders & champions???

  57. I am so angry at this!
South African savages, just like the protesters, damage and destroy anything.
But only *****s one level from the stone age do this.

  58. I am comforted by one South African who says
“The majority of South Africa’s leaders lived in Zambia as guests of the Goverment and at the expense of the common people, during the liberation struggle. To have stones thrown at the bus that was carrying Zambian players defies reason. Shame South Africa.”
There are some South Africans after all, who are equally disappointed at this shameful act….I rest my case.

  59. Aparently the two boys or men who were detained for stone throwimg are now free. This is silly. These idoits must be punished. Spending one nite in police cell which is just the same as the ‘sharks’ they live is a slap on the wrist. To those ‘kunjani’ supporting this behavior I say learn sto appreciate Zambians. Zambians helped and sacrified to stop Apatheid…as if that is not enough, we have to leave our beautiful mother Zambia to come help u develop the country coz u have no skills besides toitoing… Give us Credit..

  60. I would love to get into some people’s minds and see how there brains work………africa when are we going to grow up?????????????????????UBUTUTU

  61. SUCH BEHAVIOURS SHOULD NOT BE ENTATAINED IN FOOT BALL. I THINK CAF AND FIFA SHOULD DO SOME THING.SHAME TO THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA AND LET THEM START INVITING WEAK TEAMS THEY CAN BEAT

  62. The politicians in S.A have failed. They are too busy in the scramble for the national cake.

What they needed to do when they came to power was send all these cavemen back to school.

That’s why they are demanding salaries of R16 000 without any specializations. This country is heading backwards. What type of people are these who don’t know how to live with others in this age!!
No wonder Lota and Mbesuma could not score when we played S.A. They feared leaching afterwards.

  63. And what kind of injury did my friend Katongo experience?
Who drove the bus after the driver ran away? He quit the job by himself. Fired!!

  64. Apparently most of their bloggers has predicted that they would beat Zambia 3-1, or 2-1. I am surprised that they were shocked by the result.
We have the goalkeeper in Africa at the moment and they should leave us alone. Get well guyz.

  65. black South africans are so brainwashed. They would never do that to a white team or indian team, they just nod yes bass, bass and act like houseboys. To other blacks they think they are superior.

  66. Sansamukeni #81 Thats the way forward. Lets not act like Holier than thous. We are not exactly angels. We stoned Senegal when they beat us at home and police in riot gear had to be deployed. The story above is spiced with some lies. The driver never ran away.

  67. It’s with great sadness that am now reading this thread. Like all Zambians do, I was celebrating the win over SA yesterday. This is more than an embarassment for SAFA. First, they should hae made sure that security was tight for the visiting team, regardless of the size of the match. Second, why the hell did the bus driver stop the bus and run? Who is he? SAFA, should sanction its own people for this evil behaviour. These south african hooligans should be punished severly and made an example of. Then the afcon 2013 should be moved to another deserving country. This is just unexcusable sorry, Kalusha, you say we should forgive and move on? Why? Because, you know your family lives in SA and you’re scared these bustards will come for you? Come on!

  68. Suppose a 100 people attacked the bus, that doesnt even represent 1% of SA, lets not be quick to judge or call people names. It is unfortunate though

But we’d rather waste time on football than confront all these life threatening challenges?Next time you see a poor zedian just know its a self inflicted wound. You have a better future learning IT services, global commerce, engineering and health/sanitation than aimless foolishball.

  70. What if the attacks with the stones caused so much harm to our players that they would no longer play football, were those gangsters going to take care of Mweene and Katongo’s families. This issue should never have been down played even by FAZ. Akalema takaleka, something worse could happen if we dont come out and seriously condemn such barbaric acts. These people might just be hiding behind children to escape their savagery. From the pictures on TV, at the stadium after the last whistle, you could see that they were so pissed that they were capable of doing anything. Don’t worry Chipolopolo, you are the best in Africa, the Champs, but you need to work harder to prove that you deserve that title, some people are jealous of you. Thanks Renard & team. FAVOUR IS OUR PORTION. GOD is with us.
