Government is targeting the creation of 300,000 jobs in the tourism sector this year alone. Tourism and Arts minister Silvia Masebo said that the Patriotic Front (PF) government wants tourism to be used as a vehicle for job creation in the country.

Ms Masebo said that Government will provide an enabling environment in which more jobs will be created. She was speaking in Berlin, Germany, last night during a dinner hosted in her honour by Zambia’s ambassador to Germany Bwalya Chiti.

Ms Masebo has urged Zambians living in the diaspora to consider investing in the tourism sector back home.

She told Zambians living in Germany that the PF government is reviewing policies and legislation in the tourism sector so as to create a favourable climate for investment.

“For now Zambia is the best destination because of the natural tourism attractions in has,” she said.

Ms Masebo said Zambians living in the diaspora would do well to invest in the tourism sector back home because the industry is presently dominated by foreigner.

She urged Zambians living in Germany to become good ambassadors of Zambia in marketing tourism abroad.

“You are the best ambassadors who can help the country attract tourists especially that Germany is a big tourist market that Zambia is targeting,” she said.

Meanwhile, Ms Masebo has described her visit to Germany as successfully.

Speaking to Zambian journalists at Tegel airport in Berlin, shortly before departure for Zambia via London, Ms Masebo said her visit scored a number of successes.

She said while in Germany she was able to resolve some outstanding issues with the UNWTO Secretary General Taleb Rifai on the upcoming UPNWTO general assembly in Livingstone.

Ms Masebo was accompanied to japan by the ministry permanent secretary Charity Mwansa as well as director of transfrontier conservation areas, professor Andrew Nambota.

Meanwhile, Ms Masebo has urged Namibia to consider establishing a direct connection flight from Windhoek to Livingstone to help boost Germany tourist inflows into Zambia.

Ms Masebo said Air Namibia should consider establishing the flight so that Zambia could tap into the Germany tourism market which that country was presently enjoying.

She said Zambia needed to also benefit from the high number of Germany tourists visiting Namibia.

The minister says Zambia needs more airlines to fly into Livingstone in view of the forthcoming United Nations World Tourism Organisation general Assembly.

She was speaking in Berlin, German yesterday when she called on Namibian Minister of Environment and Tourism, Uahehua Heruga, at the ongoing World Travel Trade show.

In response, Mr Heruga assured Ms Masebo that his country enjoyed a good share of Germany tourist visitations, would consider Zambia’s request.

    • ARE YOU SO IGNORANT YOU GUYS THAT YOU DON’T KNOW THAT TOURISM IS INDUSTRY MAYBE NUMBER ONE IN SPAIN, PORTUGAL, GREECE, ITALY, ETC IN EUROPE? ZAMBIANS DON’T CEASE TO AMAZE ME. WITH POLITICAL TOURISM AND FARMING IS THE WAY FORWARD FOR ANY COUNTRY AND ZAMBIA IN THIS CASE. YOU ARE SLEEPING DOGS- CONTINUE SLEEPING.

    • Yes its possible that and your government can creat a number of jobs prior to the youths but the problem that only those with uncles and unties in HR or government entities have acess to this kind of jobs but for a mare person like me,its not an easy battle, just recently, the previously assistant acountants for MOF,most of the guys or friends i know who in my shoes non of them was picked,Were are we going?please correct things, because the vunerable are geting more poor thn ever.

  1. Haaaa!!I don’t thnk this is true, jst like wat my fellow has commented maybe u made a mistake by mentioning dat huge figure..

    • guys, the issue of jobs here and out side the world is tricky, jobs created are just for political and government family trees.so my people the only place we can seek justice is the heavens.

  2. Guys let it cross our minds, this government will not create any jobs for us,we did them a favor we gave them full time employment

  3. You will be lucky if 300 jobs will be created. !!! Either the reporter got it wrong or it is a joke of the year.

  4. I DONT THINK 300 000 JOBS CAN BE CREATED WITH THE CURRENT ZAMBIAN GOV’T IN ONE YEAR THATS JUST TOO MUCH FOR THEM. GIVE THEM 20 YEARS OR MORE WITH THAT MUCH TIME, THEY CAN TRY TO CREAT SOMTHING NOT MORE THAN 100 OOO JOBS.

  5. Impossible dream.
Hon. Minister, do you know what are you talking about? Whole of ASEAN has not created 300,000 jobs in tourist industry in one year!
As the “Rule of Thumb”, each job in tourist industry requires investment of at least USD 25,000. Therefore, direct investment estimate to meet your target should be USD 7,500,000,000 (United States Dollars Seven Billion and 500 Million).
    What a dream!!!

  6. 300pin Jobs awee Ba Masebo??Twamupapata, we have heard enough talk facts please. So we have been promised 10 000 jobs in the railway sector naimwe 300,000 muTourism, its good that limited time of one year has been mentioned in your case so 2014 londolola time and no excuses otherwise i will deal with you.

  7. I can’t help laughing at the 300,000 lie by this Masebo, the woman who overrates herself so much. Not even 30 jobs will be created in the current free-for-all state of affairs.
Masebo needs to be enrolled in a kindergarten class to start using an abacus that will help her learn and understand numerals.

  8. Tourism is huge business and Zambia’s industry has big potential and to create 300,000 jobs per year is nothing with focused minds. But, she is already encouraging Namibians to start operating direct flights into Zambia just to get commission without realising that 100,000 jobs are already gone reducing the balance to 200,000. By the end of the day she will encourage South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, to do the same and that will leave -300,000. Ministry of Labour is also busy issuing work permits any how bringing the balance to -600,000. Encourage Zambians to venture into these businesses. Also, introduce international languages like Spanish, Germany, Chinese, into the curriculum for tourism industry staff. Don’t expect these tourists to come and learn how to speak your local languages.

    • “Also, introduce international languages like Spanish, Germany, Chinese, into the curriculum for tourism industry staff.”

#11, THIS IS SOMETHING I HAVE BEEN WRITING ABOUT MOST TIMES- INTRODUCING SUCH INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES IN OUR SCHOOLS CURRICULUM. THIS WILL NOT ONLY ENCOURAGE TOURISTS FROM THOSE COUNTRIES BUT ALREADY THOSE LANGUAGES WILL CREATE JOBS IN SCHOOLS. IF THERE’S EVER ANYONE LISTENING/READING, PLS TAKE THIS SUGGESTION SERIOUSLY AND LANGUAGE SHOULDN’T START AT SECONDARY LEVEL BUT EVEN FROM NURSERY SCHOOL LEVEL. THIS IS A BRILLIANT SUGGESTION AND I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU #11.

  9. Are they jobs they will create in less than 8months or tuma piecework? Even tumapiecework twapakisa. This is wishful thinking. If that is the case, it means the entire population in Livingstone will be working including babies and grannies. Please don’t cheat us pafula. We can no longer trust u.

    • Until the airlines fly to Livingstone, jobs ferrying tourists south from Lusaka can be created. Make nice rest stops at Choma, Mazebuka and other towns along the way. That equals more jobs. The rest stops will need suppliers for food, drinks, petrol, etc. More jobs! Padiki padiki you grow the jobs, and as the jobs are done right, more tourist will come which will mean more jobs. Trust me; I am a tourist. I know this to be true.

  10. By urging a few Zambians in Germany and asking Namibia to “share” its few German tourists PF will create 300,000 jobs. Wow, now all they have to do is urge a few more Zambians in different countries and the whole country will be employed.
    We need a new president.

  11. “Meanwhile, Ms Masebo has urged Namibia to consider establishing a direct connection flight from Windhoek to Livingstone to help boost Germany tourist inflows into Zambia.”

THIS IS LIKE ASKING A FRIEND TO COME AND HELP YOU WITH MAKING YOUR WIFE CONCEIVE. WHEN IS OUR NATIONAL AIRLINE COMING. IT CAN EASILY FLY INTO NAMIBIA. ASKING NAMIBIA TO OFF LOAD SOME OF THEIR GERMANY TOURISTS IS TANTAMOUNT TO MYOPIA. TAYANKILA MBIYE, MADAM MASEBO.

    • So what do you think Emirates, Kenya Airlines, British Airways, South African Airlines are doing in Zambia? You have to wake up to the fact that creating a national airline does not increase traffic; the way forward is bilateral agreements with other regional or international airlines. Zambia Airways is history pleeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaassssssseeee let it go!!

  12. First they claim to have created 50 000 jobs since they came in office, now they are raising the bar to 300 000 what a JOKE

  13. 9 months remaining, 300,000 jobs pending. That’s 33,333.33 jobs per month . Even if you rebased these figures they are claiming its quite difficult be realistic ba PF

  14. Madam Masebo is clearly showing signs of Jet lag as evident by some of her hideous utterances. The severity of Madam Masebo’s symptoms is serious as she has crossed a number of time zones. To make matters worse the minister is now heading to the far east to Japan…she needs to get down to earth and really acclimatise for a few days!!

  15. This Government can talk the talk, but is yet walk the talk. we are still waiting for more for money in our pockets and jobs promised in 90 days Lol. The human resource is plenty and quite affordable but do they possess the skills required to attract and keep tourists coming? The situation on the ground is that the hospitality training offered in the country is not adequate hope the ministry has a strategic plan to address this. Mind you this is a country where people still laugh and stare judge mentally at a person in a bathing suit sitting by the pool side. There is plenty to be done before we can even begin to compete with our neighbours.

  16. Okay. Firstly, 300000 jobs sounds delusional. Secondly, your government seems to have a big problem with we in the diaspora. Now you are asking us to invest at home, which is well and good, but how about meeting us halfway and doing us that dual citizenship? Thirdly, we appreciate that tourism is your office and you are working on it, or at least travelling around and talking about it. What about arts, which also fall under your office?
