UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has charged that President Michael Sata has cheapened the status of the Zambian Presidency by constantly attacking him over the source of his wealth.
In an interview, Mr. Hichilema urged President Sata to realize that he is no longer in the opposition.
“It is rather cheap for him (President Sata) to constantly attack Hakainde. He has a job to do and let him concentrate on delivering his promises. Zambia is bigger than Hakainde,” Mr. Hichilema said.
He said it is now becoming embarrassing that every time President Sata opens his mouth, he is talking about Hakainde Hichilema.

He said it is cheapening for the President to constantly attack his opponents over flimsy grounds at the expense of national development.
Mr. Hichilema said the Director of Public Prosecutions is free to investigate the source of his wealth but raised concern over the direct interference of the Executive into the operations of the Office of the DPP.
He stated that President Sata is breaching the constitution by openly giving orders to the DPP to prosecute individuals perceived to be his political enemies.
“When we talk of a breakdown of the rule of law, this is what we are talking about. The man is openly mutilating the constitution and Zambians should rise and defend the constitution. We cannot allow this man to take us down this level. Zambians must stand up and refuse,” Mr. Hichilema said.

Mr. Hichilema added that he genuinely acquired his wealth through hard work adding that this is not the first time that an inquiry is being instituted over his source of wealth.
“For me this is an old story, I have said so many times that I have worked hard for my money and anyone is free to come and investigate. This same issue rose during the Mwanawasa and Banda administrations and President Sata has been singing the same song about Hakainde’s wealth.”

During a swearing in ceremony at State House, President Sata instructed the DPP to explore possibilities of prosecuting Mr. Hichilema over the source of his wealth.

I agree with Kabimba. Why is Sata investigating HH now? Does Sata need someone else to investigate for him when he has all the tax returns records for everyone in the country? What has ZRA been doing all these years? What was Levy or RB doing? ZRA could, without effort, have traced HH’s wealth like Zuma did in South Africa with Malema, and like Obama cornered Romney.

While I don’t doubt HH’s ability to generate wealth or grow investments, I do doubt his source of money. U can not do big business without big money..The fact that successive presidents have accused HH of wrongfully benefiting from the privatisation process should make every sober minded Zambian think twice about the source of HH’s money. If indeed HH legitimately acquired his wealth then he has nothing to fear from any probe instituted against him. But Sata also should let the investigative wings independently carry our any investigations and not issue instructions that are driven by his hatred for HH. Sata should also remember that what goes around comes around.
