Tanzania imposes border pass on any Zambian national entering that country

Share

The Immigration Department in Tanzania says any Zambian national entering that country needs to obtain a border pass from the Immigration Department on the Zambian side.

According to a public notice, no Zambian or any foreign national shall be allowed to enter Tanzania without a border pass with immediate effect.

The border pass, to last for one month, shall be obtained from the Immigration office at Nakonde at a fee of K2 only which should be presented to the Immigration Officer at Tunduma upon entry.

The move has, however, brought mixed feelings among many Zambians who, in the past, have been entering and leaving Tanzanian border town of Tunduma without a passport or border pass.

Nakonde District Commissioner, James Singoyi said the Immigration department in Tanzania has communicated to his office so that he can as well inform the travelling public on the Zambian side.

Mr Singoyi said the decision has been taken so as to ensure that there is peace and security on the Nakonde / Tunduma border.

He said Zambians who want to cross the border should present their National Registration Cards (NRC) to the Immigration office at Nakonde in order for them to obtain a border pass at a fee of K2 only.
The District Commissioner added that those with passports only need to have them stamped at Nakonde Immigration office before proceeding to Tanzania.

Mr Singoyi has since advised the cross border traders to ensure that they move with NRCs or passports to enable them obtain border passes at Nakonde before proceeding to Tanzania.

He said the office of the Permanent Secretary in Muchinga has since been informed about these changes.

The Zambia Tanzania border is the only open border in the Central, Southern and East Africa where people used to move freely crossing from one side of the border to the other.

In the past, though the border gates closed officially at 18:00 hours on both ends, people used to move freely from the other side of the border to the other until 07:00 hours in the morning without any harassment.

Tanzania also accepts the Zambian currency as legal tender.

  1. IT SOUNDS VERY STRANGE BUT LET ME WARN MY FELLOW ZAMBIAN, TANZANIAN ARE VERY SERIOUS SO LETS JUST FOLLOW WANT THEY WANT FOR THE KR2 AM APPEALING TO THE GOVERNMENT TO IGNORE IT BECAUSE OUR PARENTS WONT MANAGE THEY NEED TO CROSS AND BUY ITEM TO RESELL VERY TIME

  2. Hahaha, even foreign presidents have strangely found a reason not to enter Zambia since Sata and PF took over. Now they’ve found a reason for their nationals too but its being presented as a requirement for zambians since they know zed will follow suit.

  3. Let be so on both sides!
don’t worry wazambia twende polepole, tutafika tu.
    watu wa serikali wanataka

    • Haha, ati twende polepole?

  4. According to a public notice, no Zambian or any foreign national shall be allowed to enter Tanzania without a border pass with immediate effect. So why do you want to make it sound as if the measure is targeting Zambians only? What crappy reporting is this?

    • There’s nothing wrong with this report. And it is the reason why you’re not even ashamed to quote the same report you’re condemning. Are you sure there isn’t a Nurse at Chainama missing a patient?

  5. This is what corruption begets you.Every nation starts suspecting your citizens and imposing extra checks like they do with Nigerians. Our women have been arrested in China and kenya with drugs and our immigration is corrupt to the core such that you’ll never know who is a true zambian or a fake foreigner who’s bought zambian indentification documents. Now we’ll all be treated as suspect everywhere like Nigerians.

    • If you knew what you were talking about you would know that the drugs in Zambia are coming from Tanzania, pushed by Tanzanians. The biggest drug lords in Chibolya and Kanyama are Tanzanians. Heroin comes from the middle east through the East coast. Let’s not talk nonsense. Mupumbafu.

    • And the unfortunate thing is that unlike the Nigerians, you are poor and highly uneducated… Drop your proud bigotism and face the issue.

  6. There must be good reasons making Tanzania request that K2. Tanzania has been one of our closest and greatest friends since we were born in 1964. There are no ulterior motives in their decision I’m sure.

    • Reasons – to ensure peace and security is maintained. They are worried about the violence in Sata’s country

  7. this is sad what ever the reasons, the govt should find a way to chat with their Tanzanian friends to avoid such movement restrictions, ive been there also walking passed immigration offices was fun a first in central and southern africa viva AU.

  8. “The border pass, to last for one month, shall be obtained from the Immigration office at Nakonde at a fee of K2 only which should be presented to the Immigration Officer at Tunduma upon entry”.

So it is the Zambian authrities who will collect the K 2 while ku TZ you just show the ka pass.

  9. Tanzania imposes border pass on any Zambian national entering that country no The tile ZAMBIA imposes border pass on any Zambian national entering TANZANIA AT A FEE OF K2.
THE MONEY REMAINS IN ZAMBIA AND NOT TANZANIA

  10. To be frank, these Tanzanians are full of all …. ,no wonder they have even gone as far as trying to claim a piece of land that belongs to Malawi. Who do they think they are any way? Let them pay too, an eye for an eye then the whole world will be blind.

  11. How extra ordinary that till now, a sovereign nation has been allowing Zambians enter their country freely without accounting themselves to an authority there. These are the positive ripples of the KK/Nyerere post Independence relationships slowly melting away.
Could this be a thinly veiled spat by SADC and Tanzania over Zambia’s current belligerence on International fora under PF? Mark my words, this could be followed by SA, Bostwana and Namibia, imagine the chaos and inconvenience it can cause to innocent Zambian travelers.

  12. So is it how Sata entered Zambia? Because of this free movement that prevailed between the two countries?

  13. The introduction of the pass will actaully affect the business in TZ. The shops in Tunduma get business from Zambians. The border is so porus such that this issue may die a natural death. If it is a proposal from Zambia then it will not work out as they may not enforce it from the TZ side. Go there if you have never been to see how
the people from Nakonde and Tunduma mingle.

  14. What is wrong with you zambians kanshi that you complain everything??? How will that KR2/month affect someone’s business?

  15. And how would that money be administered, which government? Sounds like a taxing scheme by the Zed govt. How abt the other side, does this K2 tax also apply? Have passed thru that border on my way to Dar several times. Yes pipo just move abt freely. How abt that dusty road boundary going left with locals staying on either side, owning shops etc, does the K2 also apply?

  16. Well, I have a passport so for me its business as usual. Those with passports need not worry. I am sure the guys affected are those selling mechandize on both sides.

It is a good move but let us also impose the same on the Zambian side because from my experience, the Swahili’s are the biggest menace.

  17. Ichisungu!
The 2 kr will be paid to Zambia Immigration NOT Tanzania so the titlle is wrong!
Ba anti PF want to internationalise this issue!
Take it up with the Minister of Home Affairs

  18. leave Sata and pf out of this fi hate hate. Why complain about this?U want free everything?Time to make more too. Nafika bwalala kuli immigration .Who can extinct these kind of creatures from the face of the earth kanshi?
