Is Zambia isolating itself from the International community?

abuja 12

I was at the Abuja airport evening of 14th July en route Lagos and noticed a flurry of VIP movements, which is not unusual for Abuja. However, having checked in for my flight to Lagos, I noticed on the apron, presidential jets from Kenya, Ethiopia, Congo DRC, Namibia, Ghana and all.

I instantly knew the protocol movements I had seen earlier was not the usual Nigerian State Governors arriving for a meeting in Abuja, but a continental meeting of African leaders.

Amidst the numerous private jets at the apron, my eyes were looking for the Challenger jet with Republic of Zambia boldly inscribed on it. Alas, it was not there! I thought to myself, it is still early and surely MCS must be airborne. Quickly, I checked online sites, ZWD and LT on my iPad for news releases from ZANIS announcing the president will be in Abuja but all I saw was that Sata was due to swear in some unknown relatives into some unknown office at 8am on Monday!

Oh, mother Zambia I thought to myself. How have we sank so low in International affairs, of leadership in the region, and of shaping opinions in Africa. Oh, Mother Zambia of KK, the bulwark of the struggle for the liberation of Africa. Zambia of FTJ that ushered a free and open society. Oh Zambia that Mwanawasa opened to free market. Mother Zambia of RB, the friend of all nations. Why, I thought to myself, why is Zambia missing in this conference? A conference that intends to address afflictions killing our people! Why?

I later monitored the news to find out if anyone is representing Michael Sata at the conference. While Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Malawi, Cameroun and other African countries were mentioned, nothing mentioned about Mother Zambia, not even the High Commissioner (do we even have one??)

We the Zambian people need to ask Mr. MICHAEL SATA to come out his comfort zone in plot 1 and lead, lead not Zambia, but lead Africa, what we have always done from colonial times to September 2011.

The Special Summit of the African Union on HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria was held from 12 – 16 July 2013 in Abuja, Nigeria. It was dubbed Abuja +12
Theme: “Ownership, Accountability and Sustainability of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria response in Africa; past, present and future” was an opportunity for member states to review progress and challenges since the Abuja declaration in 2000.
Abuja declarations include:

  • Plan of Action on Roll Back Malaria (RBM)
  • Plan of Action on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases (ORID) of 2001
  • Accelerated Action towards Universal access to HIV.

Highlights of the summit

HIV/AIDS
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) launched a new framework to accelerate action in reaching 15 million people with antiretroviral treatment by 2015, aimed at reducing new infections and ensuring a healthy generation. The framework reveals that the foundations for ending the AIDS epidemic are being established by scaling up HIV treatment combined with expanding access to other essential programmatic activities. The WHO country representative, Dr Rui Gama Vaz said that the new WHO published ‘Consolidated guidelines on the use of antiretroviral drugs for treating and preventing HIV infections recommends early initiation on ART.

Tuberculosis
Though progress has been made in reducing and treating TB no new strategies or breakthrough in treatment has been recorded despite cases of Multi Drug Resistant TB across regions.

Malaria
Discussion on malaria revealed at a 50% malaria funding gap meant to boost the anti-malaria programme in Africa.Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu, stressed that Nigeria is refocusing its approach to malaria.

Executive Director of the RollBack Malaria Programme of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Fatoumata Nafo-Traore, said in an interview that the biggest challenges facing Africa were the double-edged problems of the financing gap and the development of resistance to insecticides. The mosquitoes that carry the malaria parasite are increasingly developing resistance to the available insecticides, she said. She noted that though extra ordinary progress had been made in many African countries on the malaria control, many of the countries are very poor and are in dire need of financial support to roll back malaria.

  1. Stop exposing your ignorance you silly author – Why single out Zambia. How many presidents from SADC attended. This may have been an ECOWAS and ARAB meeting. You don’t have to attend every meeting unless there’s something in for you

    • Iwe mwana Sata, akulyafye… and be aware that one day it shall become like gravel in the mouth. The Author is on point.

    • Iwe chi Umwana, why should we care who esle attended? All I care about as a Zambian is what my government is doing to address serious social ills that were discussed at this forum. Instead of going to North Korea for a wasteful trip, I would rather see tax payer money spent on gatherings like these instead of appeasing Kim Jong Whatever’s ego! Shaaa!

    • I CAN TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE WRITER, I WONDER WHAT GROUND ARE YOU CRITICIZING THE WRITER. YOU SOUND AN ENEMY OF PROGRESS LIKE YOUR SATA. SO SAD INDEED.

  2. The meeting was to talk about the main diseases affecting Africa it’s obvious the president is not interested in HIV/AIDS Tubercolosis and Malaria so why bother. It’s ok for him to see people die he has nothing to lose that’s your eish if U’re infected or affected it’s not his problem. So much for the love of humanity Mr presido.

  3. Surely hate can drive people to become lunatics. Any meeting means the president has to travel? Surely hate, envy, exaggeration and speculations are born out of lack of understanding

    • Ye!! We wonder who lacks UNDERSTANDING????? One who thinks that bald heads are a problem – this guy is amazing – Chikwanda has a small “Airfield”, which is still getting longer – yet our “partially blind king” doesn’t seem to NOTICE IT AT ALL!!!!
He has the FATTEST MINISTER, for that matter AS MINISTER OF DEFENCE – one such that, in rolling field exercises can’t keep with the progress!!! Yet he complains of Police recruiters – i guess he itches for possibly, the only position that he may just barely qualify for!!!!!

  4. I bet you would love that wouldnt you? You are a sadist i guess, yes you would love that just because you are not happy with whose leading you, it’s normal to go through such when things are not going your way, it’s also normal to have someone in power who does things as if he’s just waking up from chainama, but thats no reason to call for such, or indirectly suggest hatred. but to what extent? This is a sign you need help, my dear things will get worse and will never be the same anywhere else, Go on top of the mountain with a huge loud speaker and call on all the nations to quit Zambia! As if they give a rats A$$ what happens in Zambia!

  5. Who ever wrote this piece is an *****, you think we should go to every meeting even if the meeting does not concern us. This is what I call idiocy.

  6. You call this journalism ?Hate articles, dat is your journalism? l di ots!Mr Sata is not Rb who even wen i go into de achieve he has bin a play boy,a sheet of paper dat has no patriotism.Yo compaign 2 paint Zed black outside will still hit yo face.

    • What journalism are you talking about ,do you still live in the 1980’s ? This is social media mwaiche.A guy at the airport in Abuja notices that Sata is no where to be seen,he tweets, goes on facebook and the next moment the whole world knows we have a sleeping president. Your president sneaks out of Zambia ,someone at the airport tweets, a nurse at the hospital sees Sata sneaking in,she puts it on facebook, soon the whole world knows what kind of medical problem our sleeping president has.Welcome to the 21 st century. Its about time you caught up.

  7. how do you invite someone who doesnt follow protocals, the truth is no country will ever invite sata for any official meeting.business should be business not circus that exposes ingnorance.

  8. I hope the author of this article reads the comments from progressive bloggers above who have clearly told him where to go and how to get there! Next time you think of writing such tr@$h do us all a favour and shove it where the sun don’t shine

    • You are such a loser! If you did you social studies you would have learnt that Zambia has played a role in alot of regional matters in Africa. Its not right to be seen trekking to North Korea and Palestian that have no positive bearing on Zambia.HIV/AIDS and Malaria affects us all and from the look of things you suffer from HIV related psychoses.

    • Ba Madea. You must be the one that wrote this extremely useless article! And obviously you know the HIV related diseases. The point is (as Chekov has put it) this article should not be anywhere near being classified as news! Or even an article that should appear on any reputable website! Frankly speaking these ‘talk shops’ are a waste of time and some of these leaders are better off staying at home and sorting out other issues and leave such summits to people who actually understand what is being talked about. Look at the delegate list and think again about what you have just posted.

  9. What a waste of time! Who even gave the go ahead to have this online? Some people are still living in the past. We have problem if we think a head of state has to attend every meeting, when chances are there might not even be a resolution. Anyway you have high commissioners for that very reason. The meeting obviously had an agenda which I am sure any grade 12 can make sense of so why send a head of state? It’s just madness. Why waste valuable tax payers money which can pay for teachers and nurses, when technology now allows you to have video conferencing at only a small cost? We need to move with the times.

    • Next time we should send our own Madea who is very competent in Social Studies. Imagine the low caliber of Zambians we get on these blogs and we wonder why we are developing at snails pace. I think some chaps got used to seeing the head of state attend each and every meeting, ceremony (local and international), launch, commissioning, opening. Shocking!

  10. The bottomline is that Zambia’s Sata was invited but he has been shuning such events after having been booed over his sensless bald head talk. He has vowed not to cooperate with some AU Heads of State especially those that have classified him as a scatter brain. I hope he changes his atitude for the good. Pa ego problem pali ba shi Chilufya.

  11. I think the article may be well-intended and factual. But the thing is Zambia has been through that route as you pointed out with the KK’s and others. I tell you that nothing beneficial to the country has come out of that so-called leadership apart from spending millions of our hard earned kwachas just for the sake of showing leadership. Look at some of the countries for which Zambia made sacrifices; we cannot compare ourselves to them in terms of economic performance. We cannot continue investing in other people’s affairs. Moreover, it is not every meeting that the country must have representation.

  12. I agree with you, zambia has been relegated to the negatives, how can he even go to Nigeria if he can not even manage to invite a foreign official to grace the garicultural show? The best you hear is building relationships with China which he highly critised in the last 10 years of his life before he became presido, opening up relations with Palestian, Cuba, even North Korea sure? Anyway the man knows which direction he wants to take to …we will only know when we reach there

  13. “Is Zambia Isolating itself from the International Community?”
the journalist is good at catching the attention of the reader, but he or she should improve on giving the substance.

  14. Pf wanted to get into GVt at all costs and after achieving that they seem lost and never have known what next. They think all has already been achieved and let me let you all know that you will cry with the US£750m they shared amongst themselves. There will never be any good use of this money just like the mines privitisation Chiluba did

  15. Yes, you can still access the Zambian Watch Galu by opening Facebook creating your own address and having the same Dog staring you!

  16. To still access Zambian Watch Galu, open Facebook and create your own page. The Galu is still very much alive!! Zei, as Zorba the Greek would say!! Yes, there is no wine but the vines remain in place!!

    • Instead of insults and disparaging speak, why can’t you contribute to conversations in a logical and sensible manner. In response you say? (Cue profane remarks and unintelligible dribble or realisation that it’s counter-productive to speak negatively for no probable reason and say something that one can take away as a ‘good contribution’.

  17. how ironic, the week an HIV/AIDS conference is held, happens to be the same week we run out of ARV’s – ba koswe have failed to govern & now fail to acquire medicines. You can’t blame the conference organisers, they wanted to get on with serious business, not have some old station porter expose his ignorance about bald heads & fat policemen!!

  18. RB never missed a chance to go globetrotting and was roundly condemned for being a tourist rather than a governing President. Why do you want MCS to the same route?

  19. The summit/ meeting not withstanding, the general apathy (not everyone is a lazy bum) towards work and dedication is appalling. On a recent visit to Nairobi, Kenya, I saw first hand why Kenya, still the most popular tourist destination, is fast becoming Africa’s tech hub; the Silicon Savannah as it’s been dubbed. Even Eric Schmidt from Google acknowledged this when he visited iHub, in Nairobi. We have a budding tech scene in Zed but the lack of support as seen in Kenya is just not there. This seemingly has led some of the guys an gals at Bongo Hive in Zed to falter and perhaps lose confidence while others still may give up for lack of proper infrastructure and service from ISPs, Phone operators,ZESCO and government agencies. What say you People?

  20. Some pipo fikopooo! Some meetings are just a waste of money! Doing what in Abuja? Atase! Do u know how much it costs for the President and his team to go out on a trip like that? U dream alot! Ifiloto

  21. i am Mr Alexander from us, i really happy that i and my wife are cured of HIV with the herbal medicine of Dr Julius kelvin , i have been suffering from this disease for the past 3 years without solution until i came across the email of this doctors who have cure so many people with his herbal medicine, i also chose to give him a chance to help me and my wife, he told me what to do and i kindly did it, and he gave us his herbal medicine and direct me on how to use, i also follows his direction for use and he ask us to go for a check up after 2 months and which i did, to my greatest surprise our result came out as negative, we are really happy that there is someone like this DR who is ready to help anytime any day.to all the readers and viewers that is doubting this testimony stop doubting…
