Investigations by the Human Rights Commission have concluded that the widely reported sex scandal at Chikankata Secondary School did take place.
The Commission however found that the allegation that the pupils were made to repeat the sexual act while teachers photographed them were not true.
Commission Spokesman Sam Kasankha said the investigations also found that the pupils involved were indeed issued with letters of indefinite suspension.
Mr. Kasankha said the Commission sent an investigator to Chikankata particularly because those involved are pupils who are generally within the age which can be described as children.
He said the Human Rights officer in gathering his information, interviewed school authorities including teachers, the District Education Board Secretary as well as the Provincial Education Officer including the four parents of some of the pupils involved, who live within Chikankata, and two pupils, a boy and a girl, who were involved in the scandal.
Mr. Kasankha said the Commission heard that when these pupils were discovered in the act, the school authorities immediately contacted by phone some of the parents and guardians of the concerned pupils.
He added that four of them went to the school and were present when the school authorities interviewed the twelve pupils at around 04:00hours saying there were twelve teachers and four parents at the scene.
Mr. Kasankha said the Commission has since recommended that the Ministry of Education should expedite its disciplinary process and communicate to the affected pupils and parents.
He said currently, pupils are uncertain on whether or not they will be allowed to sit for the final examinations to be held in October, 2013.
Mr. Kasankha said the rules of natural justice should however apply to all pupils involved, who should each be given an opportunity to be heard before the final decision is made by the Ministry of Education.
That is sad that children are involving themselves in such acts. This simply shows that the children have been exposed to illicit videos which they can only access through the internet. Indeed children should be given a chance to be heard as that is a fair way of dealing with every case. However, the children should be allowed to write their examinations. Children have the right to education and denying them the opportunity to write their final exams will only disturb their future education. I hope the parties responsible for dealing with that case will be wise enough to recommend that children be allowed to sit for their exams!
From grade 6 – 12 , I used to have girlfriends. Grade 11 & 12 was intense, some terms even 3 girlfriends at boarding school and neighboring villages. These are just kids experimenting and having fun the wrong way. The consequences of sending these kids out of school may maybe lifelong. Just let each one of them dig a knee deep hole, give them a couple of lashes on their buttocks and send them back to class so they do not repeat it. Besides they are already suffering embarrassment.

one thing for sure is that this issue is being blown right out of proportion !! This issue should be resolved in confidence by head teacher and hid disciplinary committee in presence of their parents, NOT in public media like this .These are only growing children with high levels of curiosity at this age and of course not forgetting the high levels of hormones. Where is the evidence that there was actual penetration or it was just “yapa dress” girl and boy play. Let them sit for their exams please as much as they should do some form of punishment that should not disturb their school time table period!!
