Opposition UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema has charged that Cardinal Joseph Medardo Mazombwe should have been granted a national mourning.
Mr. Hichilema said considering his work, it was important that the late Cardinal is granted a national mourning.
“He did tremendous work for the body of Christ and for this nation, we thank him for everything he did for Zambia. His legacy will live on,” Mr Hichilema said.
“Am not sure how the President exercises his discretion. One thing for sure is that if we were the ones in office, we would have accorded the Cardinal a national mourning. This is not a debatable matter.”
He said Zambia has in the past honoured several individuals with national mourning and that the same should have been accorded to Cardinal Mazombwe.
Cardinal Joseph Medardo Mazombwe who died last week was put to rest Tuesday afternoon at the Cathedral of the Child Jesus in Lusaka.

Priests are humble servants of God. They should not care about pomp and splendor. National mourning is not needed in this instance.

Why was hierarchically junior late Fr. Mwebe accorded a national mourning and not his eminence cardinal Merdado Mazombwe?
Ignitius Mwebe was given 3 days national mourning and his boss Mazombwe gets nothing? This is a clear case of TRIBALISM that runs in Ukwa’s small brain, to him Mwebe was bemmba and more deserving and Mazombwe was not bemba and thats all that matters to Sata.

There is a deficiency in understanding religious faith in the observation made by HH. Had he been a Catholic he would have been guided by the Canon Law (Vatican II) and the Vows that priest’s take that makes it difficult even for politicians to honor them upon death. These are basic attributes for anyone attempting on the Presidency of our country.

Cardinal Mazombwe was the supreme spiritual leader in Zambia. Yes he could have been honoured with a state funeral. But of what benefit? The cardinal in his life may not have valued so much the the earthly honour, pomp and splendour but rather he was commisioned to spread the works of Jesus Christ to all corners of the earth and save souls from eternal annihilation. After all, genuine believers aspire to get honoured in heaven and the new paradise. Thank you mune HH for your concern, but you could have done better to keep quite without a comment. By coming out like this you want to politicize the cardinal’s funeral. If we are to honour people let them be given that honour while they are alive Amen.
