Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba has refuted a news story attributed to him in Monday’s edition of the Post Newspaper under the headline “Easterners are sly.”
In a statement, Mr. Mwamba said the story is a malicious attempt by the newspaper to malign his image.
Below is Mr Mwamba’s statement.

My endorsement for President Michael Sata has laid bare a clandestine scheme to prop-up and impose puppets. Its architects have resolved to fight anyone in their way and ensure they succeed with their devious scheme. They are deceiving themselves.
Today, 9th September 2013, the Post Newspaper bears a screaming and mischievous headline: “EASTERNERS ARE SLY-GBM”. Let me mention that while the malicious headlines by the Post Newspaper are inconsequential to me and I’ll leave it up to the reasonable minds to see through their lies and distortions, I want to tell them that they have no capacity to come between me and my cousins in Eastern Province as is the case with Today’s Headline. In the context of my statement with reference to Mkaika, SLY meant CLEVER.
My cousins in the Eastern Province know that attempts by the Post Newspaper to insinuate and misrepresent the context of my remarks are hogwash and should be rejected with utter contempt.
I have profound respect for Easterners as much as I do for all Zambians from all corners of the country. The Post Newspaper drew another blank here! Just to drum it into the ears of the Post Newspaper and Fred M’membe- GBM stands for UNITY in the Nation, in the Party and in Government. Unlike them, I’m not a divisive and polarizing person.
Today, we can assure them that the collective courage and wisdom of the Zambian is about to break the Bwinjimfumu Cartel! The destiny of our country lies in the hands of its people as chief architects and NOT in the Post Newspaper. In case the Post Newspaper forgets, We, The Zambian People, will always Determine Our Own Destiny.
Yes as citizens, we will not always agree on so many things but one value we all must share is our agreed love for Zambia. With this love, we have a duty to defend our inheritance for posterity’s sake.
Bring it on GBM. Mu Mmembe’s stupidity should come to an end NOW.

@Ndobo – are you sure what we are reading here is written in GBM’s handwriting??? GBM is also the Minister of Defence with an entire department that deals with public relations, so have you considered that, like the President, GBM didn’t actually write this statement himself and so it is a bit clumsy naivety to claim that those that say GBM is not educated are lying?? Tone down…!! These are our leaders and we should carefully hold them to account and not just run around blindly whenever a press statement is released. That is the very reason why Zambians will continue to suffer, and may be they deserve it. Our country is probably the most uncritical population on the continent. Zambians can love you just because you talk a lot: “Uja aziba ku shouter!!”, whether you deliver or not.
As they say “when elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers”. This is a classic case and the only one to suffer will be the PF party from all this.
From a Zambian interest, it is good that GBM is fighting back and helping “expose” M’membe’s treacherous and deceiptful mentality. M’membe does not have the slightest interest of Zambia nor it’s citizens at heart despite the obvious fact that he feeds off them. However, GBM does not realise that by exposing M’membe, he is also exposing the fraudulent means in which his now party managed to sweep to power. General Godfrey Miyanda obtained an order from the courts to stop Mmembe’s post from reporting on him or what he says unless he has given them a written statement. This was after the post were twisiting stories against him.
GBM should do the same and stop giving them interviews!

However, I like your strategy of drawing the attention of Zambians to yourself – by taking on the Post. It is a good strategy and cleverly your name is being noticed amongst all the senior PF officials. Your ambitions are noble and go for it, as you say it will be up to the PF officials to decide whether you will succeed ba Sata and it is up to the Zambian people to vote for you.

In 1991, Southern Province was the only region that voted ALL its MPs into MMD under a Bemba President. Not even Luapula, CB and Northern achieved that feat.
On the other hand, Bembas are known for not voting for a non Bemba candidate. Come on who is tribal here? History must not be distorted!

We are all Tribal. Bembas will vote a Bemba no matter what. Easterners will vote Easterner, Southerners will Vote Southerner. Thats the voting pattern in Zambia. The worst Tribalists are Northerners/Luapula and Southerners. These two will vote only for their own. HH can never win in Luapula/Northern. Sata can Never win in Southern. Rest are flexible….

Those that love GBM can have him, but we know who they are. I don’t understand this attack on Fred Mmembe who has never spoken back and who is not in government. This is obviously very tribal-based support and we know the stone-age behavior of most of our friends. But Zambians are now very awake. In 2016 you will keep your GBM and take him wherever you want including your bedrooms. If President Sata does not stand in 2016, that will be the end for PF. If the new constitution comes into effect before 2016 then we might have an interesting battle. But HH will be hard to beat. So, again, if you love GBM just because he is your tribesmate that’s fine, but please say so openly.
Do you read what ZWD say about Fred Mmembe? Do they hate him for tribal reasons? Agreeing with GBM when he makes a valid point does not mean you love or support him. The fight between the GBM camp and Kabimba camp is a war of brains, which GBM is quickly losing. It is a shame to see GBM make statements in the press and then denying them the next day. Obviously those that support him have something in common with him – which is fine. For those of us who witnessed these actual events, to see GBM harrassing Easterners in Mkaika and then expecting them to vote for PF is an insult to Easterners. By the way, one Easterner just told me they don’t appreciate being patronised like that by GBM. The fact is GBM wanted to make good (muzungu anikonde!) with the president by harrassing Easterners into voting for PF and failed miserably to deliver Mkaika.
