The opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has threatened to shred President Michael Sata’s speech if he does not read it in a honorable manner during the official opening of Parliament on 20th of September.

MMD president Nevers Mumba says his party does not expect President Sata to degrade the standards of the august House by turning it into a comedy hall.

Dr. Mumba says Parliament should not be used as comedy hall and that the President’s speech to the house should give honor to the house.

Dr. Mumba further demanded that the PF government takes the Access to Information Bill to parliament for enactment as the house reconvenes.

Meanwhile, Acting Chief Government Spokesperson Fackson Shamenda says the ruling Patriotic Front (PF) remains committed to having the Access to Information Bill enacted into law.

Speaking to QFM News, Mr. Shamenda, who could not guarantee whether the Bill would be tabled in the next session of Parliament, says the PF government is also making progress on many others media reforms in the country.

Mr. Shamenda who is also labour Minister, however says he is not aware at what stage the Access to Information Bill owing to the fact that the Minister who was spearheading the taking of the Bill to Parliament was not well.

Mr. Shamenda has advised all stakeholders interested in the passing of the Bill to be patient with government as its enactment is a promise the PF will fulfill

  1. Access to information Bill? Access by whom. Certainly not by the people but the state machinery trying very hard to install spyware on all our computers, tablets and smart phones so that you can eavesdrop into our conversations. I have been made aware or should I say we are aware of Huwaei or whatever their chinese name is having installed Detection Systems on all Zambian ISPs to capture our data. China is trying to break away from this humiliating strategy of its people when you guys are incorporating it. Zambia is technologically light years behind the western world therefore, the country should be striving to close the ever gaping and widening digital gap between us and our friends in industrialised world. Remove all tax and duty from IT equipment imported into the country – empower!

  2. …. I know! why do they rush to open their gobs with nothing to say. How do you govern a wide range of id10ts….by treating them like that right? Who gave this guy access to the Internet? Instead of using it to further his knowledge he/she is waking up early to be first to vomit trash! These are serious matters and believe me these guys in government do read these comment and take ideas from us. We are helping govern the country. The digital era is here to stay.

  3. Parley protocols should be amended so as to allow mps to make follow up questions dirctly to the President ,based only on his speech.

  4. DURING THIS OFFICIAL OPENING OF PARLIAMENT, THE PRESIDENT WILL CALL FOR A MINUTE OF SILENCE FOR THE LATE WIFE OF DANIEL MUNKOMBWE.

  5. @ MMD Cadre,

  6. BA MUMBA PLEASE YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BY NOW THAT SATA’S STYLE OF LEADERSHIP IS NOT BY MAKING NICE SOUNDING SPEECHES WHICH ARE WELL CONSTRUCTED AND CORRECTLY PUNCTUATED. HE IS A MAN OF ACTION. ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS. JUDGE HIM BY HIS ACTIONS AND NOT THE TONE OF HIS VOICE. HE IS NOT A PREACHER WHO SHOULD JUST STAND IN A PULPIT TO DELIVER SERMONS. YOU DONT RULE THE COUNTRY BY TALKING AND TALKING. TALK IS CHEAP. IT IS NOT HOW WELL YOU DELIVER THE SPEECH THAT MATTERS. BUT IT IS HOW EFFECTIVELY YOU IMPLEMENT THE CONTENTS OF THAT SPEECH. NOT HOLDING IRRELEVANT PRESS CONFERENCES AND MAKING PRESS RELEASES. SO BA NM YOU CAN SHRED THE SPEECH IF YOU WANT. I DONT KNOW IF THAT WILL BE HONORABLE TO DO BY A FORMER PASTOR OR IS IT FORMER CHRISTIAN.

  7. Ba Mumba, I don’t see anything wrong if Sata throws in a joke here and there as long as the jokes are not distasteful or over the top – otherwise his speech would become too boring. I watched a sermon in Ghana in which you told quite a few jokes – which made your address interesting.

  8. In Zambia everything is comedy, from commercial adverts to important national issues. For once let us see Micheal addressing national issues with the seriousness that these issues deserve. When you have worked and people are happy, a joke or two is not bad,but in the middle of confusion.
