ZCTU calls Examination body to pay teachers for invigilating exams

Share

The Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in Northern Province is appealing to the Examinations Council of Zambia (ECZ) to start paying teachers allowances during the invigilation of pupils’ examinations.

ZCTU regional coordinator for Northern Province, Christopher Chungu, made the appeal in an interview with ZANIS in Kasama today.

Mr Chungu said the role of the teachers ends at teaching the children in class before the examinations start.

He added that the invigilating and monitoring exams is an extra responsibility to teachers, hence the need for the Examinations Council of Zambia to start paying teachers their allowances.

Mr Chungu said he does not understand why teachers do not get paid the allowances when other officers, like police are paid.

Mr Chungu explained that teachers operate under the Ministry of Education and not Examinations Council of Zambia, adding that the ECZ is another board that runs autonomously and gets funded for all its operations by government.

He said it is for this reason that his office is appealing to the ECZ to consider start paying teachers such allowances.

Mr Chungu said this will be another way of motivating workers and become more responsible in their working places.

Mr Chungu further observed that if the situation goes unchecked it is likely to start de motivating workers in the teaching service.

    • Simple!!!!! tell the ECZ that next time teachers won’t discharge their duties. Let the them hire their own labour. They also single our source.

  1. Rubbish proposal! These Union guys are short sighted, if they demand this the government might question why they should continue to pay teachers salaries during the holidays when they are not doing anything? There is nothing strenuous about invigilating a 2 hour paper compared to teaching for 8 hours! The standard of education has gone down in Zambia because of people like this Chungu, who do not understand the row of teachers in education and the importance of having an independent examination council. A good teacher is known by the good results of his students in an exam , so Mr chungu should not treat education like a manufacturing assembly line where students are treated like goods and taken from stage to another without asking the quality of the workmanship who worked on the goods!

    • Why does Electoral commission of Zambia pay the people who help it conduct elections even though most of them are civil servants who are paid by grz

    • Teachers do not go on holiday? BIg mistake. If you have not taught, do not open your mouth careless. Teaching and lecturing is a mental tiring job.
Why police are paid when there on salary, Why pay provincial party cadres 11000 from govt coffers?

    • Am ashamed for you that you are not ashamed to expose your ignorance to the world.
Chungu is very right, only a quack who has never invigilated before would claim that invigiting is a simple task.

    • leakages are there because teachers want to raise money for lunch and transport. The union is right,I did’nt know that they are not paid for the service.

  2. Teachers face a lot of risks when invigilating mwebantu bakwalesa. If a teacher makes a mistake eg leakage, the penaulty is 5 years imprisonment and dismissal from the job for no pay at all. Sometimes honestly we should compare the risks involved and the pay. Though Mr Chungu, and his union, is right, the timing is extremely bad because these issues have been discussed several times and unions had the opportunity to table this during the negotiations for salaries and conditions of service. They missed the chance and want to discuss it now as an after thought when exams have already been distributed. Some union guys always miss the point ka.
