Nurses and Midwives at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka have downed their tools demanding for increased salaries.

The strike at UTH follows similar actions by nursing staff in some other parts of the country.

The Nurses and Midwives interviewed in Lusaka said they have gone on strike because the 4 percent increment salary offered by government is a mockery and an insult.

The nurses and midwives have vowed not to go back to work until government addresses their concerns.

“If government really respects our profession, they should immediately offer something decent to us. We cannot accept this mockery of a salary increment, we deserve better,” said one of the nurses found at UTH.

He said nursing staff in Zambia is over worked and under paid, a scenario he said should change.

“We are supposed to see a minimum of eight patients per day but we are now forced to attend to 80 patients per day and this government wants to pay us peanuts.”

Nurses and Midwives from Western Province were the first to down tools on Wednesday.

And some people whose relatives are admitted in UTH have appealed to government to immediately end the strike.

They said government should quickly address the matter as this will negatively affect people going to seek medical attention at the health institution.

They stressed that failure to stop the strike action by nurses and midwives will result in many lives being lost.

Zambia Union of Nurses Organisation -ZUNO- revealed on Monday that the total increment of salary for some health workers does not amount to 21%.

  1. Very sad developement. But i thought the minister explained to them how the whole salary amount thing was arrived at.They should instead blame their unions who negoatiated for them and not putting the blame on the government.

    • These people work had under very difficult conditions. Honestly, just the way Cabinet found it appropriately to increase its own salaries why should paying nurse a descent salary be a problem?

  2. Its sad people work in govt as casual works still getting k1000 as a minimum wage while those in civil service getting k3000 which is not fare and they are pipo who are doing a great job. Am really aging the govt to look on that and to end casualasation through employing them.

  3. Get back to work please or you will be fired. If you don’t we will go ahead and get retired nurses or better still chinese to work for the same pay.

Most nurses atitude towards patients is pathetic. Are you sure your productivity is equaivalent to what you want, or is it not just greed.

  4. A CLASSIFIED DAILY EMPLOYEE IS NOW GETTING K3100 WHILE A NURSE IS NOW GETTING K3400. SURELY IS GOING TO SCHOOLWORTH ANYTHING?

THE DOCTORS SHOULD ALSO JOIN FOR GETTING ONLY ABOUT 9% SALARY RISE.

  5. people are not seeing the main issue here;its about getting a salary almost equal to a cleaner who is your juniour and has no qualification…this must be addressed otherwise it will be difficult to supervise these maids/cleaners

  6. The Nurses have got every reason to complain, go to any Zambian hospital or clinic and see how much work nurses and midwives do. Compare the three and judge Shamenda. Cleaner getting KR3100, Nurse = KR3400, Doctor =KR17000. To me this is nonsense, which criteria did they use to come up with the above figures.

  8. That’s the government for you the so called Salary increment back firing
they need a lot of prayers they can’t do anything right, why they didn’t do
same increment across the board now they have created issues which should
have been considered long time ago or explained to the people before than
    catching them by surprise.

  9. Some decisions PF make awe sure how can a nurse be almost at par with a cleaner?? It’s like a bunch of kachasu drinkers sat and came up with this nonsense! time to borrow more and appease these nurses, now people should understand when we say, don’t let a grade 3 run the affairs of our country.

  10. Sata has never been to school and he doesn’t value education,he’s having deja vu of his time sweeping in London, that’s why he thinks a cleaner can have the same salary as nurses..what a nut!!

  11. Sata aint running nothing, you have your so called intellectuals in offices making suggestions and all. All he does is approve. If nurses have someone to blame it surely isnt Sata but our so called economists in the country.

  12. Why should you have k300 difference with your cleaner? Is there anything similar about your job specifications? Riddle that! Try and do some economics while you’re at it,first clue (you both do not generate, just wait for others to work and cover your fees)

  13. This calls for resignation of ZUNO executive for misleading their followers. How can you honestly accept a situation of harmonizing salaries of CDEs n nurses. Nurses are among the professionals who are most sought globally. For any government to return professionals there is need to put in place incentives in line with global trends and not trying to frustrate the very few who have sacrificed a lot to remain in the country. Some pipo may insult our nurses coz of lack of humane on their part. I’m working in Australia currently and I witnessed a strike by nurses demanding to reduce the nurse patient ratio from 1 nurse per 8 patients to 1 nurse per 4 patients to enhance quality of care. The Australian nurses are among the highly paid globally. Give nurses what is due to them 2 retain them.

  14. Less money in their pockets. more money to send politicians and Sata to India for tratment. some coming back in coffins.

  15. do employees in Zambia know that there are proper channels to follow when aring their views? is this due to lack of knowledge or what? we are very far from development.

  16. I totally agree with u! Blogs don’t unstnd wat Nurse or in short health personnel go thru! Same pipo complain of long hours waiting to be attended to wen they seek medical attention in Public Institutions to high number of Patients. I would call upon ZUNO, HWUZ and CSAWUZ national leadership to resign for signing the agreement that respect a CDE and not professions. I am calling upon all Paramedicals to join Nurses in fighting this injustice brought in by the corrupt Unions and the PF Government that does not value education!

  17. This is what I have been saying.. a human being is inherently greedy. The same people saying the government is spending too much will never refuse an increase. Thats why we have MP’s approving an increament of their salaries and go out there in the public and act like they are the most fiscally responsible people. If nurses are given an increament others will also say we have been given a raw deal why should the diffrence between a diploma holder of which most nurses are and myself be only K1,000? This is the inbuilt software of a human being..’comparison’ it just gets worse when it is invaded by trojan viruses. Money will never be enough.

    • At least you can compare a diploma holder and a degree holder with a difference of K1,000 but how can you justify a cleaner (untrained, unskilled, grade 9) to a diploma holder with a difference of only k300 salary. What’s the use of going to college?

  18. In as much as you supported the PF move, I believe the only solution is to give him back his pot-folio as a minister he is fighting for though he can not see that he is thrown out on a mistrust of vuvuzela

  19. iwe we know that money is not enough but cde na nurse can not be compared, pliz shut up grade 4 to anatomy & physiology do you understand that! We need money and nurses pleaseeeeeeeeee make sure u fire that zuno president immediately, it seems he was fast asleep whilst negotiating there z no way we can be insulted in such a manner.

  20. Does our government really know what it takes to train someone to become a nurse. How do you pay a cleaner K2900 and aTRAINED nurse K3100? Are they sure that we are almost the same with our friends who opted to stop school in grade Seven and got married? How will i advise them about the benefits of going to school when we are graded the same by our employer.

I guess this is what we get for wishful thinking.
