I am a concerned Zambian living in Pretoria South Africa. The independence celebrations at our mission in Pretoria has been characterised by segregation and greed by the Embassy Officials.

Unlike in the past when we could assemble at the mission and join all Zambia to celebrate our hard earned independence, it is very unfortunate that the new administration at the mission has this year introduced invitation cards based on who you know.

This act of unpatriotic Zambianship is taking us back to those days of “Wako niko” and should be condemned in its strongest terms.

Zambians should not be divided on a special day like October 24, just because of selfish motives driven by nepotism.

October 24, is for Zambians from all walks of life regardless of tribe, status or colour.

I would like to wish every Zambian across the globe, the very best on this day in the calendar of our country.

  1. 2585 vs 1760 or 81 vs 25. in ratio terms if elections were conducted today, voting would have been 3:1.
Seemly HH has more votes and more liked his message because of the same
PF do something before it is too late

  2. So there are people who still cry foul over such trivial issues? Man, get you braii stand and roast your meat if you want to celebrate. Why blame embassy full …of course friends?

  3. I think they mistook your name for a Mpundu from somewhere else not Luapula, Muchinga or Northern Provinces. How on earth could they forget one of their own?

  4. What’s de point fighting to get to the Embassy for some celebrations guys or is it an opportunity for free beers?U better of celebrating such a day at home with ur beloved family. In fact cards are meant to create orderliness and not for every jim and jack troopin in at the embassy.Coz even at state house in Zambia whenever such events are held. Formal invitation cards are sent out.Its not every zambian who shud get to state house or else that is trabo. So, you dot hv a point.why are u cryin???

  5. The same here in Ghana embassy my good friend.they look at your face before they will invite you and your family.Any way at least you had one in Pretoria, there was nothing like that in Ghana.May be they had the indepence celebrations behind closed doors in our embassy in Ghana.People in the embassy are so arrogant that you can’t believe it.The old regime was far much better and organized and friendly than the current one.Pls treat every zedian as a zedian don’t look on there faces or the kind of work they do or what they do.We are all Zambians.

  6. Rent a hall and throw a private party for Zambians and their friends and families. That’s what we do in the US….no one gives a crap about embassy sponsored party…..embassy does not exist as far as some of us are concerned. I honestly can’t tell you what these embassie’s do that serves the people of Zambia in this country. I tried getting my new passport following all the instructions given on embassy website….not even a response. When I called the office, they would advise that I follow instructions on website. Did it through my family back home….had my passport within two weeks. Funck the embassy…..throw party yenu mwebene and enjoy……Happy 49th Zambia!

    • I wrote to our Zambia embassy last year in Japan only to receive a wrong response exactly after one year.
The are tentacles of govt meet to welcome President on hospital visits

  7. I never go to any of these nonsenses because anything organised by a Zambian civil servant is useless. More so the Pretoria office is known for discrimination and lack of service to fellow Zambians from time immemorial. I normally celebrate at private functions that Zambians are doing. Why go to functions where certain drinks and food are reserved for certain so-called VIPs who dont even look like VIPs?

  8. Make you own Independence celebrations.

At some point we need to snap out of that Kaunda era ‘One Zambia One Nation’ “government will provide for all” way of thinking. The day we stop looking to government for solutions will be the day we we move in to the fast lane of moving forward

  9. but celebrating for what? and who took away our independence in the first place?
did god limit our rights and liberties at creation? i dont think so.
    so fyabupuba

  10. Ba mpundu for security reasons you can not allow every jim and jack, the best you should do is to form an association and have yourselves registered with the mission for easy recognition.

    • Recognition for what? We don’t even require an association. We have NRCs as Zambians for identification!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Really i see no reason of celebrating our independence @the embassy in Pretoria when you can have fun at home and also invite non Zambians for a braii n drinks peacefully.

  12. In spite of the leadership of those mission staff being Members of the Family Forest they decided to join the people of the Western Region in mourning because their comrades are in the Mwembeshi Maximum Security Prison for being peaceful in spite of what they were promised before the September 2011 elections. What’s the point of merry-making when those you were supposed to rejoice with are in prison?

  13. Personally i think it depends on how the Zambians in Pretoria celebrate the independence day if food is provided the embassy will need to budget for a particular number of people. So not everyone can come every year…its an idea to celebrate with other Zambians at your home or park (braii) or even organise something as a community rather than depend on the Embassy, if the embassy cannot do something for everyone next year organise something that will have lots of Zambians come to enjoy themselves. Who knows after you do that the embassy may have a few go to their celebration and may ask instead to work with you after.

  14. you cant all be invited.how many chinese and indian nationals are here in zambia.yet all the times i have attended their national days there are more non chinese and non indians at the function.better still come back home if only for the national day celebrations then you dont have to go to some embassy.the celebrations are any where you so wish to hold them across the legth and bredth of this vast country

  15. What can you expect from Sata’s nephew (Chikonde) whose job in South Africa is to follow up on the education of Sata’s children from Kaseba.

  16. WE ARE ALL FREEDOM FIGHTERS IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER ATTER ALL OUR FORE FATHERS FOUGHT FOR THIS UHURU WE ARE TAKING ABOUT TODAY. THERE ARE MORE SELFISH ZAMBIANS THAN AT INDEPENDENCE TIME UP TO THE LATE 70’S.

  17. uuuuuuuuuuh u are even complazining my friend…here in malaysia the freaking emassy invited local malaysians compared to us zambians…..to celebrate our own indipendence.

  18. I write to comment on B.M.Mpundu complaint about the Independence celebrations held at the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria on Wednesday Thursday, 24th October. While it is true that the High Commission did send invitations to the “formal” part of the function, it is impotant to clarify what obtained. The function was in two parts – a formal session which was scheduled to take place from 12.00 to 14.00 and an informal open part which was attended by Zambians from all walks of life, without condition.
We suspect that our Brother Mpundu got this information through rumourville and the grape vine. In all fairness, the High Commissioner and the entire team at the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria should be congratulated for a well-organised Independence day function.
