Zambia storm Cecafa Cup semis

Share

Zambia needed post-match penalties to beat stubborn Burundi and secure a place in the semifinals of the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup Kenya.

Nchanga keeper Toaster Nsabata saved one of the three penalties Burundi missed as Zambia won 4-3 after a goalless draw in Mombasa.

Felix Katongo, Kondwani Mtonga, Bornwell Mwape and Julius Situmbeko converted their penalties for Zambia.

But Alex Ng’onga and Kabaso Chongo missed theirs before Situmbeko saved them by converting a sudden death penalty.

The two sides had endured a dull 90 minutes before this third quarterfinal match was decided on penalties.

Meanwhile, this is the first time Zambia has reached the last four of the Cecafa Cup since 2006.

Zambia will now face the winner of the fourth quarterfinal match between Ethiopia and Sudan in Tuesday’s semifinals.

The Ethiopia-Sudan match kicked off minutes after the match between Zambia and Burundi at the same venue.

    • @Jay… am happy you are humbled by Patrice Beamulle, you even shortened your name from JAY JAY to a mini jay.
You leave Patrice and you go for top-scorer Festus. Bornwell score 2 goals just to add salt to your bleeding soul.
Zambia 4-3 Burundi, Zambia qualify to semis, what else can you celebrate?

  1. I saw it coming. By the way the match today was very boring. Zambia please have a game plan for scoring. coach PB what is the problem with the guys?

  2. Zambia has no strikers to talk about, if you look at all 4 goals in the Somali game they were gifted by the Somali goalkeeper who was failing to hold on to the ball. The rest was being at the right place at the right time. I don’t see Zed going past either Ethiopia or Sudan.

    • Ba Zuberi, what do you expect? e bola. you capitalise on the mistakes of your opponents. it is not always about how you play but also about how your opponent do. Just congratulate our boys and wish them luck.

  3. chaps, if you claim zambia has no strikers then equally the other teams have no strikers hence the clean sheet in the last two games,,,, or alternatively they have a superior defence which does not gift goals to other teams. so look at it from this angle and give them praise where it’s due!

  4. Great job boys … we need to develop more fire power in this team. I know that Patrice took a huge gamble by putting together a nearly new team but you never really get to know how fast you can self-actualize without pushing your limits.

I give him kudos for that but fire power is what wins games and it all starts in the mid-field. It would be chimerical of any one to think that can scoop the Cecafa Cup without putting the much needed emphasis in our mid-field apparatus.

So, within the next day or so Patrice needs to concentrate on that as we plan on meeting Sudan. The Sudanese are huge and tall, our came plan should include speed and agility because the smart people of the Zambian Enterprise are counting on bringing this trophy home … Good luck, you have my support y’all.

    • meant to say “The Sudanese are huge and tall, our GAME plan should include speed and agility”.

Iye Chipolopolo …. Iye Chipolopolo …. Iye Chipolopolo …. Iye Chipolopolo …. Ba Zambia Iye Chipolopolo …. Fipolopolo.

      Zambian fan for life!!

    • Its not a new team. These guys have been around in the local league with exceptio of few players. This is the same team which won the COSAFA cup ths year.

  5. I have a problem with our midfielders its seems they don’t know when to pass the ball to the strikers and they also don’t seem to understand the strikers movements, today’s game there were too many high balls which strikers couldn’t control also kampamba has been off form since the last yellow card, the coach should have seen he has been a passenger the last 2 games he has played. For me there is no game plan its seems the coach is just trying just like he said he has 20 players to try,we need character in the next game to be honest Sudan played better than us.

  6. Now here we are again a foreign coach taking Zambia to the semi-finals, the under 20 twenty both men and women are struggling and who is coaching them a local coach, so Zambians don’t be stupid support Patrice so that he achieve whats he is planing to achieve, no more talking of coaches lets also tell our players not to drink kachasu, chibule and mahule during off season.

  7. ZAMBIANS YOU ARE RUTHLESS PEOPLE , HOW CAN YOU BEAT YOUR NEIGHBOURS(Iam not sure we are neighbours) TWICE also to make matters worse you are just a guest team, leave thi tournament to us EAST AFRICANS ORGANISE YOURS IN SOUTHERN AFRICA AS YOU CLAIM TO BE IN SOUTHERN AFRICA BUT GEOGRAPHICALLY YOU ARE IN CENTRAL AFRICA OR EAST CENTRAL AFRICA.

  8. Fi Sudan nafisa nakabili na bola yama delay……When they score first they feign injuries, they waste time unnecessarily and you know they just want to frustrate the opponents. If you want to play Sudan, score them first and in that way you enjoy football. Zambia 2-1 Sudan…….I predict…

  9. Our game seemed very slow and predictable in attack and we also gave away too many free kicks in defense. Our passing game was also below the standards we showed against Tanzania.
