ZESCO has in the last two years created a total of 1,697 jobs comprising 280 permanent and 1,417 contract jobs.

ZESCO Spokesperson Henry Kapata disclosed that the jobs were created through the company’s robust electricity installations projects countrywide.

Mr. Kapata stated that apart from creating employment for the Zambian people, ZESCO has also embarked on a capacity and skills building project in various technical and non technical disciplines for all its employees.

He told ZANIS in an interview in Lusaka today that the power utility company has also continued its multi skilled human capital programme through its temporary and contract employment scheme.

Mr. Kapata named the projects ZESCO has undertaken in the last two years as the installation and commissioning of Shiwangandu Power station in Muchinga Province, refurbishment and upgrading of the Skyways substation in Ndola, and the Kariba North Bank extension project.

Other projects are the installation and commissioning of Leopards Hill, Lusaka West, Kafue town and the Luano substations in Chingola.

Mr. Kapata disclosed other projects as the installation and commissioning of the optic fibre network countrywide and the prepaid meter system in Southern, Eastern and Western Provinces.

    • We know that you created a lot piece work jobs at ZESCO, but most of the workers have not been paid their money just like the created district workers around the country.

What use is a job that does not pay your wages for months on end?

  1. It is surprising that at the time when ZESCO is expected to be reducing its number of permanent staff , the company is doing the exact opposite. ZESCO’s employee / customer ratiois the highest in the region making ZESCO inefficient and uncompetitive. As a result ZESCO’s balance is so bad that ZESCO can not raise money from the capital markets for its projects. It is for this reason that ZESCO is always asking for increases in tariffs . The increased tariffs are to pay salaries of bloated staff.
It would have been helpful if ZESCO also explained the duration of the contracts for the contract jobs . I suspect these are of 6 months to 2 years duration depending on the project. I also suspect that the majority of these jobs would be of the unskilled to semi-skilled nature.

  2. Lower than the number of power cuts in each affected area… unless you round it up to the word ‘frequent’…

  3. HENRY KAPATA is now with Zesco? Is this the famous Kapata from Lusaka City Council? If he is the one, then we are in for some real good drama. He’s such a creative fella. Being at ZESCO where he’ll be announcing the root causes of loadshedding, we can expect some nice commentaries spiced with a sense of humour. He’s such a good bloke.

    • Kapata will soon be infamous because he is too overzealous …muzungu ani konde type! Zesco is not Lusaka City Council where you were talking about traffic and garbage collection – without much impact on people’s lives! We need a more realistic picture of the problem of load-shedding and the high tariff rates not casual worker employment statistics.

  4. ZESCO EMPLOYMENT Z ONLY for RELATIVES, I HAVE NEVER SEEING ZESCO ADVERTISING JOBS SUCH AS TECHINICIAN OR ELECTRICIANS? what type of jobs are tou talking about? iam a qualified technician holds diploma but becouse i hav no relative who work their i can find job. ZESCO YOUR SHOULD CHANGE ALL WE ARE ZAMBIANS , WE NEED JOBS. LET PIPO WHO ARE QUALIFIED TALK THE JOBS, IT WILL RESULT INTO PROFENSIONALISM.

  5. Comment:Queit a good number though…i understand the criteria you use for one to be employed on a permanent basis..they have to work on contract basis within the system for sometime. Now my question is why dont you engage skilled personell like craftpersons at contractual stage so that it is only skilled craftspersons or technicians who graduate to permanent employment unlike the current situation where even grade 12 are elevated to permanent at the expense of people who sufferd years of toacher at college. You should also please do away with nepotism for the sake of people like me who dont hav a relative at the company,so that we can also be given a chance to compete on merit.

  6. Comment:Am kalikeka aged 22 from chingola, completed grade 12 in 2012 bt not gone for further education standards due to lack of sponsership and i have much interests in working with electricity so pliz am asking u zesco staffs to employ me even as a casual i would really appreciate so that i can raise funds for my education. [email protected] is my email on Facebook its stevo G man kalikeka

  7. Comment: Av worked for this company for 3years on cassual basis wit electrical papers why?its not fair.

  8. I agree that Zesco has become in a sense pipo with no relatives can’t get jobs which not ok.(no stay wire no job in Zesco)

  9. Comment: its really sad that those with qualifications are just home suffering, yet others are being offered employment in the name of a relative who works at zesco. No wonder there has been alot of cases of casualties due to luck of unprofessionalism. Sad indeed

  10. People exaggerate u know u keep on talkibg of relatives being employed only it happens in every corporate world its up for u to further your education if fortunate enough otherwise we have to deal with it dont line up on a job interview with the same exact papers of a thousand applicant b unique and discover that thing that tips u a above others wake up people are making careers and bycks while u stuck there complaining wake up

  11. Mr kapata don’t tell lies .Zesco in point of view the number of jobs which you have created, three quarters are your relatives, how not even qualified ones and it full of corruption in recruitment process. GOD WHO PUNISH YOU.
