The African Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (AMCHUD) Southern African Sub-regional conference kicks off tomorrow in Lusaka.

Minister of Local Government and Housing Emerine Kabanshi who confimed the development said the conference which will take three days is a preparatory meeting for a fifth which is expected to be held in CHAD next month.

In a statement issued to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Ms. Kabanshi said nine countries have confirmed participation and will be represented by their respective ministers responsible for housing and urban development.

She named the countries as South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, Mozambique Malawi and the host Zambia.

Ms Kabanshi disclosed that the conference will also be attended by the Acting Head of the Permanent Secretariat of AMCHUD, Thomas Ogutu and Inhabitant Deputy Executive Director who is also the United Nations assistant secretary general, Dr Aisa Kacyira.

The conference is expected to be officially opened by the Vice President Dr. Guy Scott.

And Ms Kabanshi said the conference is significant to Zambia because it is taking place at a time when the country is reviewing its 1996 National Housing Policy and in the process of developing a national urban policy to guide and control urban development.

Ms. Kabanshi said Zambia is also in the process of reviewing various legislations related to housing development in order to provide the necessary mechanisms and innovations for adequately responding to the challenges of human settlement mainly caused by the rapid rate of urbanisation, population growth and the expanding socio-economic activities.

She said the sharing of ideas, exchange of human settlements and urbanisation from countries around the region will greatly enrich Zambia’s process of formulating appropriate policies and acts.

AMCHUD was established as the main consultative mechanism on the promotion of sustainable development of human settlements in Africa.

  2. Did Mulenga clear the roads of dogs?
Engage Finance Bank, building society department for money laundering ideas on borrowing from habitat and using for non-housing lending.

  3. Why did they pick the dirtiest country in the region with corrupt urban councils and fetid slums aplenty to hold a conference on housing? Surely we’re NOT a role model on housing.
