PRESIDENT Michael Sata will soon be launching a national youth employment strategy aimed at mitigating youth unemployment in the country, Youth and Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili has said.

Mr Kambwili said the strategy, which had a holistic approach in tackling youth unemployment, was currently being printed at the Government Printers in Lusaka.

He said this in Livingstone at the weekend when he paid a courtesy call on Livingstone Institute of Business and Engineering Studies (LIBES) acting Principal Daniel Mwale and other senior members of
staff.

“We have come up with youth employment strategy which is a holistic approach and President Sata will soon launch it. Right now, the document is being printed at Government Printers and once printing is completed, the President will unveil the strategy and the document will later be taken to all corners of the country to try and reduce youth unemployment,” he said.

He said there was need to have concerted efforts in fighting youth unemployment as the Government alone may not manage to do it.

Mr Kambwili also said the Government was encouraging all trade schools and youth resource centres across the country to take up grade nine dropouts to train them in various skills.

“Before the Patriotic Front (PF) came into power, what used to be youths training centres were a big joke. The MMD Government used to put up a 1 x 3 classroom block with few chairs and called such facilities as youth resource centres without carpentry and brick laying tools,” Mr Kambwili said.

He said the PF Government had since changed the scenario as it had come up with proper model infrastructure for all youth resource centres which would be accredited to the Technical Education, Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training Authority (TEVETA) so that graduates would have artisan
qualifications.

Mr Kambwili said the new youth resource centres would be fully fledged colleges with all employees put on Government payroll.

“Under the previous Government, they used to depend on earnings from youth resource centres to pay workers and as a result they never used to attract quality instructors.

“What we have done is that we are putting up modern infrastructure in all existing structures so that we can start proper enrolment and recruitment of lectures by the end of this year,” he said.

He said some centres would be attached to big colleges like LIBES to help build capacity which would in turn help to address youth unemployment.

  1. Copy cats after seeing that HH had attended an enterpreneurship meeting you also do something similar…”pompous chimbwili”

  2. This man would have gone to Kalingalinga Youth training centres and what is taking place there?
    Not just Bulls.h.i.t.ing

    • @Cindy,
Your advice will fall on deaf ears, in most African countries including Zambia they think obesity is a sign of affluence and good living.

  3. So now we have a national youth employment strategy after PF has been in Government for over TWO YEARS! Truly CNP!

What happened to the jobs, more money in the pocket in 90 days?

Maybe these IDI0TS meant to say 90 years. And I do not believe they can manage it even then!

  4. If only this BUFFOON knew what holistic approach meant…why can he not articulate what this programme will be…instead of throwing money at everything try for once to to think outside the box by promoting policies that encourage apprenticeship programmes/schemes in the private sector.
Is it not this selfsame BUFFOON who was mentioned in the Auditor General’s report for handing out Youth empowerment cheques without following procedure.

  5. Forget employment and focus on economic empowerment. I am sure this policy will be so broad that it will be rendered useless before it even leaves Government Printers. Identify MSEs owned by young people, up-skill them (especially with newer technologies), provide access to cheaper credit (out of DBZ not the Ministry) and, yes, identify and legislate quotas. Market-led solutions to market problems. Overall, find a way of stimulating demand, not these tired supply-driven strategies. And quit equating youths to artisanal skills only…there are young people I know who are providing IT and advertising solutions and they simply never feature in your frame of reference.

  6. The idea is good except it won’t benefit the intended or targeted youths. It will be done within your system and you’ll be singing praise at the expense of the poor and unemployed youths. When are we going to have the government which’ll be transparent and honest in doing things. You can come up such a good ideas, but people who’ll benefit most are your relatives or your bussiness partners. If you bring up an idea that will benefit, like you are saying the unemployed youths, let it be for that. And if it is for your relatives or your bussiness partners’s benefit, then don’t bring it up.

  7. HH showed them how and why he is the future president for Zambia. After HH launched women and youth policy under UPND, that is when PF is busy trying to challenge HH. HH has already shown what he can do as individual period…………………………..
